However, Rotten Tomatoes calls it: PotC is a POS
« on: May 20, 2011, 05:06:28 AM »
Damnit, I really wanted this to be good. I wanted a Tim Powers novel to be turned into a truly worthy movie.  I like Jack Sparrow, sure. I didn't think he really fit in with the story of On Stranger Tides as Powers wrote it, but whatever. I get to see Ian McShane, the scary badass from Deadwood playing Blackbeard? SIGN ME UP!

However, Rotten Tomatoes calls it: PotC is a POS

At World's End, a truly unforgiveable piece of tripe, was rated 45%

The new one has over a hundred reviews, and is running at 37%

I would say the formula is impossible to fuck up, except that they keep doing exactly that. I was keen to go see this since my local place has a new IMAX 3D screen and this was to be the showcase. oh well.

That sucks.

The first one was good fun...only half saw the others when they aired on tv (don't even know which one's I watched, they've completely gone down the memory hole)

Sort've thought they were going to turn the ship around (hire me Variety!) with this one

I saw it two days ago, horrible soulless movie with no excitement whatsoever. It seemed to drag on forever too.

excellent review of all the "Pirates" movies

I thought that by removing the issues from the previous films: Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and the other love story bullshit they could focus on what made the original so fun: Jack Sparrow and his drunken adventures. Turns out they somehow made a worse film than at worlds end. The fuck, Disney.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Trim the dead weight, focus on adventuring, add in a cool villain, can't fail.

Whoops.

The first one is great.  2nd half of the 2nd one is great.  Never saw the third because it seemed to focus on everything I hated about the 2nd.  Really sucks to hear that it's probably shitty :(

But then again, I like the Transformers movies and Tron and they were universally shat on.

Not surprising at all, just disappointing. Like James Bond movies, there is a certain core to these swashbuckling adventure movies that appeals to a lot of people who WANT them to be good even though they know they aren't.

Oh, and while there was no Orlando Bloom/Keira Knightley romance stuff, they STILL threw that in with two other minor characters, and the ending to their bit of story makes you go  ???.

Jack Sparrow and Barbossa = Awesome as always.  Blackbeard = Eh.  Penepole Cruz = She's sorta there.

First was good. Second was very very fun imo. I was super excited for the third film, and saw it on opening day. All I remember is kids shifting restlessly in their seats and asking their parents where Jack Sparrow was. I get the idea of making the audience wait for what they want to see to build up anticipation but the movie fucked that up royally with the atrocious peanut scene. I can just imagine some exec saying "lets wait them wait 30 minutes for Jack, then introduce multiple clones of Jack to make up for it!"

Worst movie I've seen in the theater. Yes, worse than Crystal Skull.

The movie really only uses Blackbeard and the Fountain from the book. They only bought the book rights and title so Tim Powers wouldn't sue them for making a Pirates movie that uses Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth.

The first one was great. When Jack Sparrow stepped into the moonlight and was a skeleton, I lost my shit. Then the movies became about some stupid ass love story bullshit and how Will Turner couldn't walk on land because he's a bitch.

The first three movies have been aired on broadcast, so I recorded them. Watched the first one again yesterday and, yeah, that scene is just excellent. Jack is clever despite the constant party that must be happening in his head. Even the uptight sailor who is chasing Will and Sparrow to reclaim Elizabeth turns out to have a good moment in the end of the film.

They really had to go out of their way to ruin this franchise, and boy have they succeeded.

I'll see it on the big screen in hopes that the size of the action will overload my brain. And the local theater serves Yebisu beer, so that will help. But in the meantime, I'ma re-read Tim Powers' book and rejoice in that.

LOL the credits don't even say "Based on" Tim Powers' book. It was only "Suggested by" because the movie has nothing to do with the book other than the title, the fact that it uses the Fountain of Youth, Blackbeard, and mermaids.

I watched At World's End Friday night.  I don't understand the hate.  Sure, some parts are a little dragged out, but I thought it was great.  I didn't even care that Jack was missing from the first part of the movie.  The final battle was a little much in some ways, but as a whole I was thoroughly entertained.

It was mediocre if you ask me... pacing was a bit slow and it lacked the flashinss factor of the second Pirates, or the overall quality of the original. The story tended to skip around a lot and explain shit to you after the scene took place... but it was still better than that awful POS that was the third film.

The ending to their bit story was the Splash ending.

And yea, Jack and Barbossa were the only good things.

Not even the mermaid attack scene was that good. I loved the ending, it was the only thing that remotely came close to the first movies. The rest of the movie was so bland my friend fell asleep three times during it.

Mups, I'm glad you liked the third movie. I didn't but it gives me something to gauge your rating of the movies.

I'm happy to hear that Tiesto liked it better than three though!

More than that, if the ending is well done, I'll be happier overall than a great movie which finishes poorly.
