Obscure PS1 games
« on: May 29, 2011, 02:47:18 PM »
Specifically, GOOD obscure PS1 games.

I just feel like playing some that I haven't played before, so bring up some old favorites that maybe everyone hasn't heard of before.

I preferred Rogue Trip to any of the Twisted Metal Games

Project Overkill was pretty bad ass back in the day.

I played Twisted Metal 2 and Rogue Trip again recently, the controls are so much better in the later. The cars actually feel like they have some weight too.

Project Overkill reminds me of those Alien/Zombie Shooter games on Steam. Almost exactly the same kind of gameplay.

Jade Cocoon is an rpg where you capture monster which isn't pretty original and i don't remember it being that good but the game has art by miyazaki if you are into that sort of thing

Kula world it's a pretty weird and unique puzzle game where you guide a ball around a 3D object and try to get all the fruit while not falling down

oh yes! fucking tomba! best zeldalike ever! seriously play this like now do it for the opening,it also feature evil pigs,FUCKING EVIL PIGS!

one piece mansion is a weird puzzle game by capcom where you have to manage a flat, you put people in their appartment and depending on their kind they either bring joy or despair to different appartment (for example the cute little girl bring joy in every appartment but the sumo wrestler brings despair to the apartment below him because he's busy stomping) sometimes evil tenant decide to invade your flat so you have to redirect all the despair to them, again it's a pretty original game

gunner's heaven is a kickass metal slug clone,i have no idea who did it

actualy i never played these but here are 2 other weirdo puzzle game i know of,one is devil dice

and there is also this

did you know there is an atlus SRPG with art made by yoshitaka amano? sounds like the perfect himuro game :teehee i played it forever ago,i remember it being ok

it's a shooter! by square! and it's more good than what you would think by hearing "square made a shooter"

a pretty cool platformer in the vein of rayman but this one has lemmings instead! i think it also got released on pc

ever played parasite eve? i guess it's not really obscure since it got a psp sequel and all but damn it's good!

Most of the games I ended up buying were high profile releases, but I'll give it a try...

- Alundra! (Not obscure, but I don't give a fuck! so good.)

Trying harder, I can only think of a few. Some were pretty known at the time, but they certainly don't get brought up a lot these days. Heads up though, I used to think they were good back in the day, and have no idea how well they've aged:

-Destrega

- Loaded (and the sequel reloaded)

- Ghost in the Shell

- Evil Zone (shut up, I loved it!)

- Elemental Gearbolt

- Gekido

- Tunnel B1 (first PS1 game I bought, 100% guaranteed to be shit)

- Final Fantasy 8

- One

- Akuji the Heartless

- Deathtrap Dungeon

- Final Fantasy 8

- Apocalypse

Jumping Flash 1/2, Ghost in the Shell, Tomba 1/2, and Alundra get my vote. Also, if you've a hankerin' for some war and strategy: Arc the Lad 2.

And while it's not obscure, I think the original Ape Escape is still one of the most inventive games out there.

wait, I think that was Bubsy 3D at the Franklin Institute future gaming exhibit thing.  PO'ed was the first game I rented when I rented a PS1, though.  The cover was a chef in a jetpack and it looked like a good time.

Tomba, Kula world, In The Hunt :heartbeat

Point and click adventure, only one I really got into during PS era (is on Saturn and PS), well this and Broken Sword

I always liked THPS2 & 3 more but it was cooler in my group of friends to be good at this game :)

turn based battle game like Valkyria Chronicles, apart from the kinda annoying VA I used to really like this

Crusader :rock made with the Ultima VIII engine. Similar too but better than Project Overkill

Ore no Ryouri is one of the few PS1 imports I own.  I remember playing it first on one of those demo disks (Jampack, maybe).

also one of the few games I wanted to see on the DS.  The closest thing on that system is cooking mama.  But having all the orders and restaurant stuff happen on the top screen while all the actions were performed using the touch screen seemed like a no-brainer.

and if we're posting imports (for the US, at least), then two other (not so obscure) games

Heart of Darkness has some of the best pixel art/2D animation of all time.  The game rocks too, a really great Flashback/Oddworld esque puzzle platformer.

tbh I never played Skullmonkeys but I understand it was a platformer of sorts. The Neverhood was a straight up point and click adventure, with all the locations made out of clay and photographed. It was a real trip.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Neverhood I'd give it a shot if you are a fan of the genre.

IIRC, it was done at the inception of DirectX, and the version it used is incompatible with other versions which followed it.

Unfortunately Crystal Dynamics is pretty much the Tomb Raider team now. They haven't made anything that's not Tomb Raider since Project Snowblind in 2005.

Which also means no new Soul Reaver games.

I want a new Gex!

That's really unlikely in the current console market. It made sense for them to do another sequel for the PS2 [when there were tons of cartoony platformers, making it odd that they didn't], but those days are gone.
