How many freakin' games are in this? Four? Five? -checks- Oh, Three. The marketing guy in the video says the full name of each game, including the subtitle, and I was all baffled.

Is this a full-priced retail game? -checks- Nope, appears to be a $50 release. Will buy. Too bad the first one's not in there as well!

Yeah it does cause the version of MSG3 is the Subsistence one.

Wow, those are old. Are there more Escape from New York references in those, since MGS' Snake takes his moniker from Plissken?

Peace Walker controls fine since it's MGS4 controls.  MGS3 is 75% fine since it's Subsistence version with real camera but there's still some "press triangle to climb" instead of just pushing against a climbable object.

MGS2 still controls like MGS1 and plays like the PS1 game.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with those controls.  When I replayed the entire series (including Portable Ops) a few years back they all held up and controlled great.  Never had to think twice about anything, but then I grew up with the series.

Only thing that really makes me sad about this collection is the MGS3 nightmare sequence was cut.  That was one of the best "WTF OUT OF NOWHERE" moments, break the 4th wall moments, innovative moments, in gaming history even if the mini-game was shallow and repetitive.  Apparently it ran on a totally different engine so it was too much work to get it in :(  The other missing things like small effects here and there don't bother me and the pros of this collection are VERY great (60fps MGS3, dual analog Peace Walker, 5.1 audio, online play in PW, clean widescreen MGS2/3, etc...)

Got this. Never played three before so this should be interesting. Loved the PSX one back in the day. Hated MGS 2.

After this I want to play 4. (I've played like 30 to 40% of that one but I'll start over)

three is awesome but god damn the beginning.  sooo many cutscenes for the first few hours.  after that it backs off and doesnt get bad again til the end of the game.  it's totally worth it tho because the game is so fucking fun.

I have no problem with cutscenes. Just not overly long and overly boring ones. If they kicked ass I'd be fine with them.

The first game in that respect was fine. It gets worse each game but I knew that going in.

I haven't played one of these games in years so you forget how little these games teach you and how much you have to figure out. I wanted to do a choke hold but have forgotten how. So I call the boss and she talks all about the "Weapon Button" and the "CQC button". I have no idea which the fuck those are. How about putting in X,Y,B, A, or whatever whoever re-did these for the collection.

edit: To be fair there is a thing on the main menu called special which I just noticed actually shows the moves and buttons needed.

I'll likely be playing this after I finish up Infamous. I haven't played 3 or Peace Walker OR 4. I might even get the first one on PSN and have myself an MGS marathon, although if I do that I too will be skipping some cutscenes in the interest of preserving my sanity.

I played through Snake's beginning sequence in MGS2 just for fun. Otacon is even more hateable than I remember. Also, the enemy alert sound STILL sends a chill down my spine. Hearing that in MGS1 used to scare the shit out of me and send me cowering under a tank or in an air duct every time

Okay I'm probably being really dumb here but how do I actually sneak up behind people and put them in a stanglehold and kill them? I'm still very early. Just past when the game does the real title screen intro but everytime I walk up behind somebody even slowly I get detected. I mean I can punch them and knock them out but I can't grab them from behind no matter how slowly I approach them. I just shot them with the tran gun in the tutorial opening bit but now I don't have one.

metal gear has two walk speeds: running (audible) and walking (non-audible). You want to walk up behind someone and press the choke button. your reach is longer than you might think. if you mash the button once you grab someone you break their neck if not you choke them out and they faint, which puts them out of commission for x minutes.

You can also walk up behind someone and aim your gun at them to make them put their hands up at which point you can choke them or whatever.

D-pad = walking
Analogue = run

Use d-pad around guards.

yeah, MGS2 had full analog control.  MGS3 had the d-pad creep.  MGS4 and Peace Walker have the crouch walk.

One reason I haven't canceled my MGS3 3DS order is because I'm interested to see how it'll play with MGS4/PW controls since you can crouch walk and move/aim.  The pace is probably much faster.

oh, and if you're playing on the 360, I think the control method might be different than what Brobzoid said.  360 doesn't have analog face buttons to do the light tap = choke, hard press = slit throat thing.

And that was it. I was trying to analog walk around people and alerting them every time.

Thanks guys.

I must say I really enjoy the aesthetic and sort of retro bond theme of this one alot more than 2. I just didn't like anything story wise or immersion wise in that game which made me really dislike the game overall. But this seems a lot better. I mean the story is typically wacky Kojima stuff but I like the wrapper this one is around. Reminds me more of the first game.

That would be so useful.

It says the moves on the special screen so I'll have to look up the difference on how to do the different CQC moves regarding the button sensitivity thing. I just strangled a guy. Haven't looked up throat slitting yet.

edit: on 360 you hold the b button to put them in the strangehold. Then once you have them there you can hit the b button rapidly to strangle them or hit the Y button to slit their throat. Note sure obviously how that compares to how it was on the PS 2.

Game does a really bad job of teaching you this stuff. You either have to look it up on the special menu as it doesn't list it in the manual or just experiment as the game doesn't really tell you this stuff.

I'm really liking Snake Eater so far. The jungle and eating stuff is neat. It just feel different than the other ones which is a nice chance of pace. It also helps that I think the humour in this one actually lands instead of not landing like it does in some of the other MGS games.

The controls are still typically balls but that's how the series has always been.

MGS3 has the greatest gameplay:cutscene ratio in the series. The entire middle has barely any cutscenes except for boss fights.

Complaining about cutscenes in MGS3 is silly because it's only only really that frequent at the beginning and like most story-based games, it attempts to guide the player with a tutorial section. Honestly, past the initial tutorial area, MGS3 is kind of already lacking in the cutscene area. When you infiltrate the second time, the cutscene ratio drops dramatically upon arrival.

But yes, MGS3 has quite a learning curve with its controls. CQC is extremely complex.

also, having the best cutscene to game ratio in the mgs series is like being the girl from 2 girls & 1 cup who ended up with the least shit in her mouth.

I dunno. I like mgs cutscenes. I always skip them on replays, but they're so fucking cheesy and fun I can't help but love them. I also think that (sometimes) they're pretty well directed. Like the part where Ocelot murders a bunch of dudes when you first meet him and then MEOWS.

As I've said I don't have a problem in general with cutscenes. I think some games handle them a lot better than others though. Metal Gear cutscenes work when they are going for that let's be cool shit or let's be silly shit like revolver ocelot in this game.

They make me want to kick my TV in when I'm suffering through the shit in MGS 2 with a bitch ass lead character always whining or in 4 when he just decides to go on forever in a cutscene. They are just bad and redundant. If you are making the same simplistic point in a cutscene over and over again and the clock is just ticking from single minutes to double digit minutes, you've fucked up. I get it. Snake doesn't have to repeat what somebody just said over and over again and have them explain it multiple times.

Of course the shit they actually should explain like controls and shit they just gloss right over.

There are good cutscenes and bad cutscenes. There are cool cutscenes and lame cutscenes. They are appropriate length cutscenes and then let me wank and just pad out this shit cutscenes. Metal Gear has always swung wildly between these extremes.

I'm only gonna play these games once so the cutscenes are part of the experience for me. (Although I did play Metal Gear Solid on PSX twice just because I loved that game so much at the time). At the time that sniper wolf cutscene was amazing. So its not like I don't think they add a lot of style and emotion to the series. Honestly that's at least half the draw of playing these games to me. So far for me fortunately it seems like MGS 2 is the only one where the story, the characters, and the cutscenes soured the experience for me. The rest have been at least decent even if they haven't sort of hit that high water mark of the first game for me which is probably impossible at this point since that first game was sort of a revolution at the time and the rest of the series has been refinement to a degree.
