Quote
2011 continues to be the year of Xbox 360, selling more consoles than any other platform 11 of the past 12 months in the United States. In the seventh year of its lifecycle, Xbox 360 is on pace to have the biggest year in its history, a feat never achieved by any console in history.

May 2011 NPD highlights include:
· Xbox 360 sold 270,000 units in May, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)

· Xbox 360 console sales during May were up 39 percent year over year, the largest growth of any current generation console on the market. May also marked the seventeenth month of year-over-year hardware sales increases. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)
· Xbox 360 game sales reached $140 million in May. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)
· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in May (hardware, software and accessories) reached $265 million, still the highest among current generation consoles. (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)

· During the month of May, four of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: “L.A. Noire,” “Portal 2,” “Mortal Kombat,” and “Brink.” (Source: NPD Group, May 2011)

Quote
Overall

“Keeping in mind that these sales figures represent just the new physical portion of the market for video game hardware, software, and accessories and not the growing portion of the industry that is comprised of digital format content distribution, May 2011 was the lowest month of sales for the industry since October 2006. A light slate of new releases is at the heart of this month's performance.”

“Overall, the Xbox 360 platform has contributed 34% of year-to-date revenues (across hardware, content and accessories) generated by new physical retail sales, gaining 7 share points over last year.”

Hardware
“The PS3, PSP and the Xbox 360 all experienced unit sales increases over May 2010. The top selling platform for the month was the Xbox 360, which has realized nearly a year and a half of month-over-month unit sales increases.”

“Sales of the 3DS were light, but with next Sunday's release of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, we will begin to see a slate of strong content come to market for the 3DS, which should help to significantly boost sales of hardware during the remainder of 2011.”

“Combined sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 (HD hardware) are up 28% for the month and 21% year to date. Although the declines in console hardware sales in 2011 are attributable to the Wii, the platform remains the best-selling of this generation at nearly 36 million installed in the U.S.”

“At the current rate of growth and decline (on a year-to-date basis) for each of the respective console systems, a year from now the Wii will still enjoy the lead in install base in the U.S., although both the Xbox 360 and PS3 will close the gap. Of course, new details on hardware introduction could certainly change the picture.”

Software

“This month's story really is about a light new release schedule as compared to last year. There were 42 new SKU’s introduced in May as compared to 58 last May, and 72 in 2009. This is reflected in the share of dollars contributed by May releases, which was 28% in 2011 as compared to 41% last year.”

“As a result of a lighter release slate, promotional activity at retail and in circulars was reduced as well, which undoubtedly affected not only planned but impulse purchases.”
“The top genres contributing to the decline in new physical software sales were Action/Driving hybrid (Red Dead Redemption) and Platform/Scrolling Character (Super Mario Galaxy 2). Despite strong continued sales of Pokemon Black & White, the RPG genre also declined since the new games did not comp the performance of HeartGold and SoulSilver last year. Dance games, first-person shooters and general adventure grew, primarily due to notable titles like Just Dance 2, Brink, Portal 2, and L.A. Noire.”

“For the month, unit sales were down across all platforms except for Xbox 360, which was essentially flat to last year (+1%).“

“Keep in mind that purchases of content are increasingly occurring in digital format, and May saw a notable digital release in the second map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops which was titled Escalation. Undoubtedly, this shifted some dollars that might have been spent on new physical content at retail.”

Accessories

“Four of the top 10 items in accessories were points or subscriptions cards. Those four items represented 15% of all accessory units sold in May 2011.”

Oh and just wondering, how much is the 360's overall sales worldwide compared to the wii's?

A little over 30 million behind.

NBA 2k11 is like, the best basketball game ever, right? I don't follow sports (though I like the games), but from what I've seen people seem to think it's amazing. I might check it out.

Well you have to like sports games and basketball games to like NBA 2k11. It's not going to convert anybody who wasn't a fan of traditional sports games into a fan.

But as far as basketball games, it's my favorite one. It's up there with the kings of basketball games. Live 95 2k1, 2k7,  etc. Which is of course not to say that it doesn't have its own flaws but it plays a darn fun game of basketball where its harder than normal to just run around and dunk (which has always been the bane of basketball games) especially in local versus play on the same machine. Online is okay but it can be laggy and slow at times.

I like playing sport video games (basketball, football, soccer - basically everything besides baseball), but I don't actually watch any sports. It sounds good though, I'll probably give it a shot if I can pick it up cheap.

Another month of identities stolen, PSN down and PS3 sales up over the year before.

Was 2010 just a REALLY shitty year for Sony or something?  Seems odd both April and May were up despite everything that happened.

That can't be making Rockstar happy. Has Bondi already been disassembled?

It's pretty good for new ip.  Generally with these numbers you take the established engine and assets and know how and try to spit out a sequel in two years to make a profit.

899k for a new ip that's essentially a modern take on the adventure game genre is...pretty damn good.

Good for a new IP.  Soft for a Rockstar-hype game, and definitely soft for the sunk expenses.  Red Dead was for all intents and purposes a new IP and it blew this out of the water saleswise.  Hard to say how the execs at Take 2 are going to see this.

Not well when they see it doesn't have the legs that typical Rockstar games have. Got to think that word of mouth is going to kill it.

at least there is Paper Mario eventually...uh, RE Revelations and MM Legends 3 (that hopefully get ported to the Vita)...maybe Mario at E3 was just early.

I don't know.  I'm not buying anything from any nintendo online store until they have user accounts.

and Luigi's Mansion 2.  I don't remember Luigi's Mansion 1.  I remember buying it with my gamecube and sold it a week later...but that was probably because I kept playing Halo on my friend's Xbox.

Kid Icarus looks ok, I guess.  I'm not a fan of the stylus for aiming controls, and the game looks like a poor man's Sin and Punishment mixed with a remake of Gungage.

Mario Kart.  It's Mario Kart with mucho gimmicks, so maybe.  Liked Mario Kart DS a lot; Mario Kart Wii was a bore.

StarFox 64 remake.  I like StarFox 64 a lot, but no online multiplayer is dumb.

I think that's everything, actually.  I was hopeful that they would announce games, or at least third parties would have anything.  Honestly, Resident Evil revelations looks awesome and I'll probably get that.

Nintendo obviously hasn't spent the years working on top Wii or DS software, making the 3DSs bare launch even more puzzling; what have they been doing? I'm not sure selling glorified ports is a recipe for success here. Zelda won't save this thing. It needs a game that sells its capabilities, as Brain Training, Nintendogs, etc did for the DS.

On one hand, I think Nintendo has seen from MS how you can survive without multiple 1st party games.

One the other hand, Nintendo's first party games aren't budget breaking by any means and they fucking rake in the cash like no one's business.

So I'm not sure what they're going for.  Maybe they're trying to give 3rd party software a chance to make a dent?

Those Brink numbers are unfuckingbelievable, especially when you consider what a turd it is online, and that online gamers tend to be pretty well connected in terms of LETTING EACH OTHER KNOW WHEN A GAME IS A TURD

The numbers are almost certainly heavily front loaded for that title. The poor word of mouth kicked in once it was released which is where the sales will plummet. Also 400k while decent for a new IP also involved a lot of marketing. I saw a good number of commercials for that game.

No one is buying the game anymore.

For the past half decade, Nintendo has done a half assed job for the most part, and raked in record profits and record sales.  It's no surprise that they attempted the same strategy here.  I'm sure Nintendo is surprised that it is failing and probably sent a manic e-mail to Game Freak demanding that they churn out a set of quick Pokemon remakes with a new set on the way.
