From what I hear, Sony isn't even advertising the damn thing yet in America?

This is going to be a barbecue.

I see the Taco Bell Vita commercials all the time. They don't say what it is though.

wow that was so funny the 50th time i heard it today  ::)

the vita won't flop. if the 3ds managed to do well in america the vite will do even better, and it's smart releasing a system near tax rebate time so that people have "free" money.

One argument I heard is that Sony knows the system is going to flop in the US and so they don't want to waste money advertising it.

The question then is why they MADE the system in that case.  But oh well.

As a gamer, I'm glad Vita exists because it looks fuck awesome ultimate portable machine and because the game library gets me hot and sweaty.  But it's probably delegated to be another Saturn/Dreamcast/first 3 years of PSP with a handful of awesome niche games and dies after a couple of years.  Unless it makes a comeback like the PSP, but it's too early and impossible to predict the likelihood of what will happen 2-3 years down the line.

they're waiting till it out to push a huge marketing compaign, they're going the apple route. Sony is expecting prolonged life long sales, not this big initial rush, because most people who get it on day 1 are hardcores. advertising it when it's out is better.

Don't see them dropping the price any time soon tbh.  Sony would rather lose money and fail like usual for a few years first.

Well, still a couple of weeks to go until launch, but it's looking like a lot of notable PSP games that are available on the digital store aren't compatible with the Vita.  Stuff I and others have noticed missing: every GTA game, Ghost of Sparta, Valkyria 2, LittleBigPlanet, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Metal Gear Peace Walker, Ys I&II, and more.

gg Sony as always

Welp, here goes that thought.

The problem is the library of games. Nintendos has mario, zeldas, mario kart and what not that always sells while Sony has their usual god of war, ridge racer, spin off gta, spinoff final fantasy that people are tired of / not interested in.

I think the games for it are fine for a traditional hardcore handheld device. The problem is that market is contracting, at least in the US. There's nothing really wrong with that gamespot piece outside of the fact that it probably doesn't belong on gamespot. Traditional hardcore gaming outlets were slow to recognize and cover the rise of these devices.

The Vita is a nice piece of hardware entering the market at an unfortunate time.

That market never existed in the US.  From what I can tell, US gamers don't care about portable gaming for "real" games.  They don't travel a lot in non-driving commutes and there isn't much of a need to have a traditional game away from the home and the big screen tv.  Nintendo portables do well because they do great with kids and parents.

These days people game traditional games at home on the big screen setup and on the go they play little iOS/Android app games in 2 min bursts.

Unfortunately there's never been and never really will be a market in the west for big screen gaming on the go.  It's niche at best.  In Japan where people tend to commute by trains instead of cars it makes a lot more sense.

That's where the contraction is happening. People who do that now use laptops, tablets, or touches in those situations. Which leaves the kids market. But $250 bucks is a lot to invest in kids especially when a 3DS is sitting there cheaper and it has mario.

It's not like I think the vita will just disappear. It won't. Japan alone insures that. I just don't think outside of hardcore portable circles it will be very relevant. That being said if/when it gets a call of duty game I might get one.  :-[

COD in bed is good idea.

We're still in a recession.  Buying a $250 gaming handheld that isn't a smartphone or a tablet is a tall order.  Couple that with the lack of Mario or Mario Kart type games to kickstart any lagging momentum if need be and you have a system teetering on the edge of colossal failure.

Don't have many U.S. games ordered right now.  Just Lumines, Hotshots, Ridge Racer, and Shinobido 2.  May end up buying the U.S. BlazBlue for all the story stuff (it has the story modes for CT, CS, and CSE), not sure.

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting Blazblue to have a 2d sprite based game on Vita to see how nice they look.  Either that or double dipping on Rayman Origins.

If Sony gets out of games or whatever Japan will basically just go to Nintendo -- which they've been doing anyways since Nintendo is in full moneyhat mode.

Personally I like the trifecta of consoles we have now. Going down to two wouldn't be so bad, though.

Alright, caved on Blazblue.  Also ordered a 2nd memory card of 16gigs for US PSN games over the years.

Current launch order:
System
4 gig stick
16 gig stick

Little Deviants
BlazBlue
Uncharted
Wipeout
Hot Shots
Katamari
Tales of Innocence R
Good People Die
Super Stardust 2 PSN

Thinking about importing Gravity Daze since there's still no info on when it's coming out on the US and if it's digital only like Europe.

I want to buy Virtua Tennis 4 but Amazon isn't even listing it still wtf.  Don't want to pay tax & shipping :|

Will pick up Army Corps of Hell (looks derivative, but it's pikmin staff), Shinobido 2, and maybe DW Next when they price drop.

I'm just getting the wi-fi system, 16 gig stick, and Shinobido 2.

I was about to go for the 3G system and ace the 16 gig, but Amazon decided not to have release date delivery.  That's enough of a reason to avoid spending extra on features I'll never use because I have a phone.

honestly if it wasn't for Shinobido 2 and Gravity Daze I'd probably pass on the Vita at launch, but those are two games I really want.  In general, I mean.  Not just reasons to play with a new toy.  And there aren't that many games I'm really excited about (in general, again).

Me? Are you talking about me?

::)

If Sony gets out of games or whatever Japan will basically just go to Nintendo -- which they've been doing anyways since Nintendo is in full moneyhat mode.

I disagree.  We've seen some publishers get bought over to Nintendo's *handhelds* - that's a different proposition from getting them on-board with a Nintendo home console.  Third parties are pretty strongly convinced at this point that there is very little money to be found in being on Nintendo's home platforms.  Whether that's true or not is irrelevant because the perception is what dictates the outcome here.

Case in point - earlier this gen when the PS3 and 360 were doing shitty numbers in Japan, did the Japanese games companies go to the Wii?  No, they didn't.  They moved Japan-focused things to the handhelds and hedged their bets on international sales of everything else.  So if Sony happened to bail out on the video games market, I very much expect the benefactors would be Nintendo's handheld and Microsoft's home console.  If Nintendo's home console at that time is up to snuff for receiving multiplat versions, it would likely receive a good chunk of them, but certainly not all and most everything would be leading on MS's console.

These companies don't like to work with Nintendo.  I hope you've picked up on that by now.  Nintendo is a royal pain in the ass to deal with professionally no matter what kind of work you have to do with them, and it's rarely worth it because of the purchase patterns of the typical Nintendo console buyer.  It's hard to get a fair picture from the Wii because of how things went down, but look at the Gamecube.  It got almost all of the same multiplat games the Xbox and PS2 did, initially, and the quality of the ports were generally quite good.  And yet, those games sold significantly worse on the Gamecube than they did on the Xbox, even when their install bases were similar.  Why?  It's a mystery, and third parties are generally disinclined to spend the money and energy solving it when they have simpler alternatives.

Maybe. I don't deny any of that. But well, Capcom and Square have gotten over themselves when it comes to Nintendo. If Sony were gone obviously Nintendo handhelds would benefit the most, but that would just get devs used to the Nintendo ecosystem and working with them. If a Japanese publisher then wanted to make a console game, who would they go with? Someone in their own backyard they've had experience working with due to their handhelds, or some baka gaijin white man company whose only comparable mobile offering (WP7) is floundering like a fish?

MH3 and DQX say high.

Wii is dead obviously. Doesn't matter. 3DS got RER and SF4 3D. I think Wii U will be in a much better position for ports, and combined with Nintendo's moneyhats, who knows?

I'm just getting the wi-fi system, 16 gig stick, and Shinobido 2.

I was about to go for the 3G system and ace the 16 gig, but Amazon decided not to have release date delivery.  That's enough of a reason to avoid spending extra on features I'll never use because I have a phone.

honestly if it wasn't for Shinobido 2 and Gravity Daze I'd probably pass on the Vita at launch, but those are two games I really want.  In general, I mean.  Not just reasons to play with a new toy.  And there aren't that many games I'm really excited about (in general, again).

Originally, Shinobido 2 was one of the few games I really wanted.  But the impressions I've seen have been less than positive.  Doesn't seem like something I'd play more than a few days, so not going to pick it up at full price :\
