Nah, Katamari is mainsteam now. Might as well call Kirby or Dragon Quest wacky-jappy.

Katamari? The series hasn't been worth mentioning since We Heart Katamari and the latest installment hardly seems to reverse that course.

I bought a 4GB for now, but I'll probably just go balls out and buy a 32GB as soon as I have some more money.

yeah, 32 is too expensive but that's the right size to not worry about filling up the card.  my 8 gig won't even hold all my psp games.

Don't be a hater.  Katamari Forever on PS3 reversed that course and was an excellent game around the parity of the originals.

People, myself included, made a bunch of elitist fuss when Takahashi left and they kept the franchise going, complaining how they were just milking it and without the original creator, all creativity would be loss and the franchise would become irrelevant.

However,

Those that actually dropped their elitist schtick and played Forever, took that back.  And Katamari Vita so far seems like it could be really good as well.

dissidia 2 demothing looks pretty nice with filtering on the vita.  mapping the d-pad to the second stick works well.

gta vcs and littlebigplanet look bad on the vita.  oddly, dissidia is one of the 'supported' games while those other two can only be transferred through the ps3.  I'll try gladiator begins later and see if it's the same case there.  or it's just because dissidia was really nice looking on the PSP too.

the upscaling may be weird, but the vita's analog sticks are waaaaaaaay better than the psp or 3ds sliders.  for that reason I'll probably just play games on the vita.

tekken 3ds is NOT 60 fps in 3d mode, that's for sure

 ???

It is definitely 60FPS in 3D mode.  I have the game and can confirm it.  I also agree with this review:

http://www.gamesradar.com/tekken-3d-prime-edition-review/
Quote
Tekken 3D's big headline feature is its ability to maintain 60 frames per second with or without the 3D effect enabled, and sure enough, it rings true: pushing up the slider at any time results in zero frame loss, unlike in Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition and Dead or Alive: Dimensions. It's the first time a fighting game has been able to run at full rate in 3D without degradation, but that said, it was hard to focus on the fighters with 3D at full blast. Our eyes kept pulling towards the backgrounds instead, but with the slider set halfway, the illusion significantly improved.

The game hurts my eyes when 3D is on.  3D is also disabled completely when playing online.

Mario Kart is 60 fps in both 2D and 3D. No change in framerate when switching from what I can tell. That's all I have for now.

I knew it.

I'll go back and check as well, but i don't think Mario Kart is 60fps in 3D

Monkey Ball -definitely- is 60fps in 3D though.

it has to be 60 fps interleaved, then? unless the parallax barrier display is actually 120hz?

yeah, all version of Rayman Origins are mostly the same, including the Wii game, which apparently uses the same assets as the PS3/360 version, only at an assy resolution.  Vita version edges out because of the OLED display.  But if you played the PC/PS3/360 version on an OLED, it'd look better (1080p vs 5-something on the vita).

well, that's what I'm saying.  The Vita's display is better than my PC monitor or TV.  I'm just saying that if I ever get an 1080p OLED TV, Rayman would probably look even better there.  I'm sure those Sony 3D goggles with two 720p oleds are better too for the higher resolution.

Shinobido 2 is great so far.  It literally controls exactly like the first game, quirks and all.  Not a bad thing, but some parts could have been updated.  A nice addition are those eyes that pop up on the right of the screen when an enemy is nearby.  Holding one locks onto that specific enemy and tells you their status.  It looks like a Dreamcast game cleaned up for XBLA/PSN.  Runs smooth and looks sharp, so I don't mind that.

and I flat out don't understand near or streetpass or any of that stuff.  it annoys me when games use those features for content like Shinobido 2 and Resident Evil Revelations do.

This sounds consumer whoreish but I'd totally be down for some PSP games revised for the Vita.  Native resolution, dual analog controls, solid frame rate for some games.  And I want Outrun 2 on this.

Wow, Uncharted GA Chapter 21...game is legit.

I'm glad I was in media blackout for all the Vita games.  Don't want to spoil it for anyone else.

Also this game is freaking long and satisfying.  Game completion says I'm at 42% but it HAS to be counting all the collectibles in the percentage.  No way I'm less than halfway through after like 6-7 hours.  Feels like I'm around 2/3rds through.

Here's some screenshots I took (leaving out the bunch I took in chapter 21).  They look really assy in screens, but in game it looks pretty nice.

how's the english translation on the vita one, bebs?  it's the first one not translated by agness kaku, so i was wondering if it felt noticeably different or less funny/weird?

also, i'm sure i don't need to point this out, but you championing a new katamari is kiiiiiinda funny given the conversation we were having in the 3ds thread.

Only played a few stages, but didn't notice.  Dialogue is weird and doesn't flow at all, but that's sort of how it is normally, so it's tough to spot the difference.  The dialogue/cutscenes are not as good as the console ones, but I tally that up to the game devs putting in less effort since it's a portable launch title, and not necessarily because of the translation.

Just listened to the Tested podcast and Jeff Gerstmann trashed the vita, said there where no good games and said it had no future. What a idiot. Gary "racist" Whitta was there too.

There argument lingered on the "games too expensive" shit but then they reccended a 3ds over a vita. What?

Why are 3ds games at $40 and $50 acceptable yet Vita games aren't? Why are Vita games that cost $40 judged to console games yet 3DS games aren't?

Man games jpurnalism is a mess.

Every person in the industry seems to hate Vita and its entire game library.

Every person who is a gamer seems to love Vita and enjoy its launch games.

There's definitely a large disconnect going on.  Not really sure why.  Then again the same press treats the PSP as a joke of a system that never had any good games and was an inferior DS, so it shouldn't be that surprising.  I can't think of one time I ever read anything positive about the PSP in the west, despite it being a good portable with a very solid library by the end.

Eh what?  I disagree every person in the industry hate vita.  Its the kids that do.   It is the kids that made DS a success over the psp, same will happen with the 3ds and psv imo.  Hardcore gamers and kids buy handhelds but older casual players dont in the west.  Big difference from Japan imo.

In Japan most gamers have moved onto the handhelds while the west hasnt.

Also the press has always treated the DS as a joke until it started selling well, same is happening wiht the 3ds where they were saying the 3d hurts a persons eyes permanently etc.  Atleast they arent demonizing the psv like that.

Yeah I dunno if people should be especially concerned whether or not Jeff is hooked, he's got his own set of tastes and they're not exactly concurrent with success or lack of it.

However, Jeff isn't the only one in the media with little positive to say about the Vita.

But this is how it is in ze industry.  One day you're a darling, the next you're dogfood, and you may have done the exact same things on each day.

Yeah- and he frequently acknowledges that hes got his own weird tastes. I think everyone who has a beef with Jeff should be required to listen to Jar Time

Okay, despite all indications it's a stupid idea, I want to buy a VITA! I've been skimming the thread but am still gonna tl;dr you:

- What size card do I "need"? Will 4GB quickly be filled up with a single demo? Is there any internal storage at all?
- I DEFINITELY want access to both English and Japanese stores. It sounds like I don't need two cards - correct?
- Can I download any of my existing PSN content (inc. PS1 games) to the VITA?
- If I buy 2-get 1, what's are the consensus best games at launch? I haven't played Rayman on console, yet, so that seems like a good pick...?
