Okay, despite all indications it's a stupid idea, I want to buy a VITA! I've been skimming the thread but am still gonna tl;dr you:

- What size card do I "need"? Will 4GB quickly be filled up with a single demo? Is there any internal storage at all?

No internal storage to use and 4GB is too small.  Go with at least 8GB.

Quote
- I DEFINITELY want access to both English and Japanese stores. It sounds like I don't need two cards - correct?

Correct.  One card is fine.  You can't even hot swap cards (with different account information) anyway, so with two you'd have to turn the system off before inserting the other, adding an extra step to the account-switching process.

Quote
- Can I download any of my existing PSN content (inc. PS1 games) to the VITA?

Only costumes for UMvC3 at the moment.

Quote
- If I buy 2-get 1, what's are the consensus best games at launch? I haven't played Rayman on console, yet, so that seems like a good pick...?

This is going to boil down to whatever genres you like the most.  I'd probably avoid Ninja Gaiden Sigma but everything else I've played has been good.  In general people really seem to be enjoying Lumines, Hot Shots, Wipeout, Virtua Tennis 4, and Rayman.

In fact I think I may go trade Sigma in towards Virtua Tennis this weekend...

@Patel if you're interested in the 3G model, Amazon is still offering the Launch Bundle which consists of: a 3G Vita, 8GB stick, AT&T sim charged w/ 250MBs (lol), activate it and you'll receive Super Stardust Delta for free. All for $300.

Basically it packs the most value for anyone intending to pick up a reasonable memory stick.

-Get at least a 16giger if you're planning on going DD.  8 if you're not (for demos/dlc/patches/saves).  Games are about 1gig on average and demos about 250-500megs.  I'm doing great on my 4gig with 10 demos installed, but I'm going all physical cart for games.

-Only 1 card.  2 makes it worse.

-PS1 games are an upcoming Sony promise.  Good luck with that.  Otherwise you can download some of the digitally bought PSP games you own and PSP minis (who owns minis  :lol).  PSN games will be compatible going forward to be played on PS3 + Vita (Motorstorm RC is the first) but already existing PSN games aren't Vita compatible.

-I forgot to mention Luminous on facebook.  If you REALLY LIKE LUMINOUS, then it's a must buy.  If you sort of like it, it's still a good buy at some point.  Very well done and you'll play for hour sessions as time flies by.

Yup, thinking of Prime-ing that set to my door tomorrow. I want Super Stardust Delta, so even if I don't want the 3G functionality it's a good deal. I just need to call Best Buy and confirm if their console trade-ins work towards Buy-2-Get-1 games, even if I don't purchase Vita hardware, too.

Oh and the indie game on the US PSN store Tales from Space something something has been getting really high praise from nearly everyone and is only $8.  Whenever I switch back to my US account I plan to give it a shot.

Jeff didn't trash Vita,he was pretty much spot on.

One word

Indifference

If you listen to his Jar Time stuff at GB hes indifferent bout lots a stuff.

Yeah, right of the bat he said that Vita doesn't fit his lifestyle.
Jeff lifestyle = playing games in front of big ass TV

I guess his cardinal sin is recommending 3DS over Vita.

apparently save data is linked to the app iOS style.  if you delete your app, you delete the data.  if you want to backup the save, you have to backup the entire app.  which also explains why  retails games still leave a presence after ejection.  that sucks.

Okay, despite all indications it's a stupid idea, I want to buy a VITA! I've been skimming the thread but am still gonna tl;dr you:

some demos download the entire game with the purchase only unlocking it, meaning some demos are 1.5 gigs.  If you want to play PSP games, those can go up to 1.8 gigs.  I have an 8 gig cart and it's manageable if you don't mind offloading programs onto your PC.  32 is really if you're going to go all in with digital downloads.  personally I'm sticking with 8 gig until the 16 or 32 gig prices come down.  like I said, it's manageable.  although, custom soundtracks mean I might fill up some of that space with music.  I dunno.

for PSN content, some PSP games, neo geo games, and that's it for now.  PS1 games are coming in the future, as well as expanded PSP game selection.

You say "switch back" - how hard is changing between US and JP accounts on the same card? On PS3, I just log out and log back in.

it's a few minutes.  it basically resets your vita to default settings each time (wi-fi data, any organization and customization of the ui, etc), and then you must watch a short vita introductory movie.  the other thing is to make sure you sync your trophies to the server.  trophies stored on the device are erased and can't be recovered.

it's probably more annoying if you plan on buying content from other regions.  for demos and free items, you just need to download them on another account.  right now I'm staying on my North American account but can still play the Ragnarok Odyssey and Gravity Daze demos, but not Vice City Stories from my Euro account.

shit sucks and I'm hoping a firmware update can just make it work like the PS3.

oh, and don't deactivate any account if it asks you to.  there's no reason to unless you're making out the account limit with multiple ps3s or psps.

You say "switch back" - how hard is changing between US and JP accounts on the same card? On PS3, I just log out and log back in.

It takes like 5 minutes.  But then you lose access to your stuff on your other account and since I'm playing things on my JP account right now (Uncharted), I want to be able to turn on and play Uncharted whenever I feel like it and not have to go through 5 mins of hoops, so until I finish that I'm not changing back to US account.

Here are the steps:
1.  SYNC YOUR TROPHIES (when you switch accounts it DELETES YOUR LOCAL TROPHY INFORMATION, so any not-yet-uploaded trophies are lost.  They need to be on the server).

2.  Settings -> Format -> Restore System Settings (this will clear out your local data blah blah blah -> YES, want to format card?  -> NO)

3.  System restarts -> click NEXT for date, NEXT for timezone, ENTER WI-FI USERNAME AND PASSWORD -> Do you want to sign up for 3G?  -> NO -> Do you want to sign into PSN?  -> YES -> Enter PSN login for account you want to be using.

4.  ALL DONE, WATCH 1 MIN FORCED FMV ON WELCOME TO VITA

5.  Get little help notifications the first time you do anything since it thinks it's your first time using the vita.  But now you are on the account you want and everything on that account works.

It sounds more complicated than it is but I listed out every thing that happens in the 5 mins it takes.  It's not terrible, but it's enough of an annoyance that after you do it a few times to try out all the demos on both stores, you'll want to stick with one account and only change when there's something you REALLY want to play on the other store.

Can you give some examples of apps that do this?  You mean if you delete Super Stardust Delta to make room at some point and then redownload it you'll have to start from scratch on your save with the game?

that's just what people on gaf are saying.  it seems true because there's no way to manage vita save files, but you can manage psp saves.

again it could be Sony being extremely cautious since wipeout and later the patapon demo saves were used to hack the psp.  twilight princess on the wii way back helped crack that too.

now I wouldn't be as bad if vita had cloud saving like iOS.  I'm not even sure how those multiplatform games like motorstorm rc would work.

Alright, so any PSN-only games I need to back up to PS3 or PC before deleting to make room.  Gotcha.

That really sucks for full games though.  Another reason for me to stick with carts.

I really would like to buy one but so far most of the games are just console-lite experiences, just like most of the PSP games.  I just don't care much for playing portable versions of games that I already own on console/pc.

That'd be like 1/10 of the game though, we'd have to play more than that.

I'll go back and check as well, but i don't think Mario Kart is 60fps in 3D

Monkey Ball -definitely- is 60fps in 3D though.

it has to be 60 fps interleaved, then? unless the parallax barrier display is actually 120hz?

I am confused here, the display just has to draw an 800x240 display at 60fps and the parallax barrier just refracts every other vertical line to each eye, correct? Isn't this the same technology behind the 3D picture of Jesus in Grandma's bedroom?

no, each pixel is essentially two pixels, each drawn projected from a specific constant view angle that corresponds to a certain light level for the display barrier. it requires two frame buffers on any 3d setting; the vertical lines are doubled in 2d mode.

I am equally impressed and let down by this machine, especially when it comes to the OS. On the one hand they tried to cram as many features as they could, and I have to say many of them are functional, but on the other it's still rough around the edges and lacking polish. I mean my god, that browser is something from first generation of Androids. I also don't understand why Friends, Group Messages (why not call it Messages?), Party, Near and the Trophy app aren't integrated into one social app. I mean it sucks when I click on shortcuts and jump from one app to the other.

Aside from those complaints and the bubble interface, everything seems solid so far... I love the screen (although I'm not blown away by it), I love the controls, and the touchscreens and back pad are good and responsive (although I hate how they can be so sensitive to heat that they pick up inputs before making contact, especially the front).

All in all, having a more grounded first impression is a good thing; my expectations were astronomically high. And I can finally focus on what matters, THE GAMES. I've got so much to play. Lots of catching up too. :bow Falcom :bow2

It's slow and organizes content, like photos, only by date from what I can tell. So instead of browsing a few folders, I'm scrolling through hundreds (maybe thousands) of images. The only workaround right now is to create new folders dedicated to the Vita itself, and drop the content there.

Edit: And did I mention how SLOW it is to copy stuff, at least from a PC?

Edit2: It's still an awesome machine though. These small issues don't mar the overall experience.

Yeah, I have all my Photos in a folder titled "Vita" and so on for the rest of the contents.

As for copying, you just plug it in then go to Content Manager app via your Vita, there it is all very easy and simple to copy stuff from and off your Vita.

iOS doesn't let you remove stock apps. The best you could do is stash them in a folder.

Which reminds: FOLDERS PLEASE!

Also: NON-BUBBLY THEMES.

I'm willing to pay $5-10 for something other than bubbles.

yeah, you can only move them out of the way.  I can't figure out how to move entire screens.  I'm too lazy to move each individual icon away since all that resets if I go on another account.  I have my games window on the third screen down.

I'm hoping there are folders in the future so I can just have a bubble for PSP, demos, neo geo, PS1, etc.  Same for 3DS.  My 3DS screen is a goddamn mess with all these GBA and NES games.  And this is on the PS3 side, but PSP and Vita games download as installer bubbles that can't be sorted into folders.  My PS3 is now: blu-ray game > twenty bubbles > folders for PSN/PS1/etc.

there are some nice things about the interface (that are also bad).  I like the pages (except when they're useless).  Access to updates, manuals, store content, and all that from the page without opening the game is nice, as is jumping straight into camera or album with the photo app.  A page before settings, uh, why? it's just an extra tap in that case.  And maybe a double tap jumps straight into the app.  and the custom soundtrack interface is great and better than the 360 or PS3.

The only thing you can do is wedge new pages between old ones , but you can't move them entirely with their icons, as far as I can tell.

they've already previewed non bubbly themes but that was well before launch so now i'm questioning if they'll ever make it out at this point.

OMG, why are all the Himusona games $40 on PSN? They're $20 at Gamstop in the ginormous Championship Edition boxes. I hope Atlus gets raped to death in the face.

Guess I'm going to buy Trails in the Sky or Ys 7 instead since XSEED isn't run by inbred goatlovers.
