These days I actually think I prefer my PSP-3000 to my Vita and 3DS.  Feels more comfortable, screen size is perfect, controls are great, OS is perfect and sleek.  I kind of wish Vita was just PSP2, aka the PSP with more horsepower + trophies.  I like the Vita, but a lot of it feels awkward and half-assed like the friendslist feature (which is pretty much useless), trophies that no one will ever see since only Vita users can see them, all the bubbles and stuff (I miss PSP folders).

Plus there aren't a whole lot of games coming out for it right now, so interest is fading.  Hopefully in a few years it'll become an interesting system.  The 3DS is just now starting to become one as the release list is filling out.

The PSP started out weak, too.  Vita has a better batch of games to play in comparison.  There's also Resistance, Gravity Rush, and MGS Collection coming in the next few weeks.  After that things are slim pickings...and that's where E3 should hopefully revitalize things.

I disagree on the 3DS.  It feels like nothing is coming out for it now, but maybe you're looking at the Japanese release list, Bebpo, which I'm not paying attention to since I have an American 3DS and I also don't care for JRPGs.  (the one JRPG that is the exception?  On Vita- Persona 4.)

I still have most of the launch games to finish anyway.  Been working on Shinobido 2 lately.

Yeah, maybe Gravity Rush will revive some interest.  I think I'm just getting that in a few weeks and then nothing until Time Travelers in July and Zero no Kiseki in August (which I'm not even going to play because I'm still 2 games behind in the series).  Slim pickings for sure for the rest of 2012 at this rate.

Resistance's probably going to be trash.

Yep.  Plus I still haven't played R3 yet and I'd rather play Insomniac's swan song for the series before I play some C- dev's attempt at the series.

sad thing is before release my thinking was "good launch but there's nothing even announced for the future."  few months later, the future is just as dark.  um, wow I can't even think of a crummy original game to make a 'wait for' joke.  Killzone vita? sure

based on the leaks it sounds like Sony is gearing up for dual PS3/Vita releases with Sony Smash Bros and LBP Karting and something else I'm forgetting.  I don't know if I care about that.

Excited for gravity daze, though! main reason I got my vita, other than to ogle the hardware.  It's nice to see an original game.  Not so much on Vita, but it looks like a game I haven't played before.

Resistance because I like the series
Gravity Rush because it looks to make good use of the vita functions and has a cool art style
LBP because I am stupid enough to think the touch stuff may actually make for a fun experience THIS TIME
COD because shootin'
Retro City Rampage because it looks like stupid fun
Pinball arcade tables and Zen Pinball
Whatever other downloadable games look interesting
Prole just sent me Dynasty Warriors, BlazBlue, and Disgaea 3

I can understand the apprehension about the future, and I agree that E3 is kind of a desperate scenario for Sony, but with how slowly I play games nowadays I am personally pretty much set for vita games through at least Feb 2013 - I still haven't finished Uncharted! :lol

If E3 is do or die for Vita then well, FOTNS quote goes here. SCEA hasn't exactly proven themselves competent in regards to reading the handheld gaming market. This is the same division that brought out Ken Levine to announce a Bioshock game that hadn't even begun preproduction, as well as Ono to announce a port of a game no one cares about last year.

Also, trash can man, while this is more of a question better off for the sales topic, I'm wondering if Konami should have had Nojiri make another Metal Gear Ac!d instead of Never Dead. I know the MGA games sold pretty poorly compared to the MGS series, but lol Never Dead. I kind of felt it was a missed opportunity to not trout out a new MGA for handhelds early this gen. But missed opportunity is kind of Konami's MO this decade.

The Vita is behaving a lot more like a Nintendo system in terms of its post-launch.  Extremely dry because publishers were cagey on its success and played wait-and-see.

I'm still baffled why this always happens. :duh

I have to wonder if Kojima had something to do with there not being an MGA3. Konami tends to shun any non-Kojima MGS game, and the MGA games are the only MG content on PSP missing from PSN, which is saying something because even the digital graphic novel is on there.

How poorly did Never Dead sell? Like worse than NISA games? What about Blades of Time? I can see that selling worse than the average NISA game.

Initial impressions from someone who plays very few Japanese games and has spent ten minutes on each of these:

BlazBlue:  I do not understand this fighting game. I think you might need an engineering degree to fully understand it. Also there's a weeaboo animated storybook thing which made me shiver in repulsion.

Disgaea 3: There sure are a lot of numbers and text on this screen. Story is cute so far. A game about self-aware assholes has a certain appeal.

Dynasty Warriors:  Hahaha, it's all cock rock all up in yer face. This one is my favorite so far.

I mean, maybe there wasn't as much for you with the PSP's first stretch, but it's pretty much factually incorrect that the PSP started out similarly weak.

In comparison to the Vita launch?  Weak (PSP had some good games, but the Vita launch blows it away).  Several months after launch, which is where we are now?  Weak.  I'm not looking at the first year because it hasn't been a year yet.  It's only been a few months since the North America/Euro/Australia launches, we're heading into the slower summer months, and people are back to "VITA IS DEAD!" again.  It's the same cycle every time.

By "flowed very well throughout the first year", I meant the first six months, too.

And I think the "Vita is dead" cries are more coming from it selling sub-Dreamcast numbers of hardware and software.

How sub, specifically?

Yep, it did really well until Sony started up the PS2 hype machine.

that first MGS2 trailer was a firm kick to Sega's groin

Yep, the first two or three months were like a rocket, then... splat.  The drop on that system was unprecedented and we've never seen anything like it since.  It was like all the enthusiasm for it died suddenly overnight.

which is amazing in retrospect since it lasted around 2 years and built up an incredible library in that short time.

Having newfound independence as a college kid, the DC was my descent into spending way too much on gaming and importing tons from Japan.

I picked up Power Stone, Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur on launch. Then went back the next day and bought more.

Wow, SCEA sucks. SCEE actually doing some good sales:

Everybody's Golf - £11.99 / 14.99€
Reality Fighters - £11.99 / 14.99€
Modnation Racers: Road Trip - £11.99 / 14.99€

Okay, only Hot Shots is a good game, but I'd bite on Modnation for that price.

The Sony PS2 hype was off the scales back in 2000.  The store I worked at sold Dreamcast systems starting at the end of 1998 and people paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars for import systems, then rushed to buy the American systems almost a year later.  Everything was red hot, then it was just like "OH MAN SONY GOT THAT NEW PLAYSTATION COMING?  IMMA WAIT FOR THAT!" and things slowed to a crawl.  Nothing had even been shown for the PS2 yet and people were already ditching their Dreamcasts.  It was insane, but good for us since those new DC systems we sold came right back used and got sold off again.

By "flowed very well throughout the first year", I meant the first six months, too.

There wasn't much released after the U.S. launch that I remember.  IIRC Tony Hawk THUG2 and the J-only first Tenchu game (later released in Europe) were the only "big" releases during the summer that followed.  I worked retail back then and PSP seemed deader than dead at the time.

Quote
And I think the "Vita is dead" cries are more coming from it selling sub-Dreamcast numbers of hardware and software.

I doubt people like Borys are thinking about comparisons to Dreamcast sales.  :p

Blue Stinger and Pen Pen Tri-Icelon, yup!  The people who made Blue Stinger also made Illbleed later on.

When the Dreamcast came out in Japan, it had nothing going for it except for a three-year old port of Virtua Fighter 3tb...which had issues.  Then Sonic Adventure came out in December '98 and things were quiet for a few months.  Psychic Force 2012, Powerstone, Marvel Vs. Capcom, Aero Dancing, and House Of The Dead 2 among others all came out.

I remember people going crazy for MvC and buying import systems for it, but shit was insane when Soul Calibur came out in summer '99.

heh, the PSP's 4th best selling game of all time in NA came out a month or so after launch.  Midnight Club.  Lots of mediocre releases, too, but aside from those, there was an ATV Off-Road Fury game and NBA Street.  I think the most important difference, though, is that something was coming out every week, even if it was something lame like Dead to Rights or so-so like Archer McLean's Mercury.  Publishers were a lot more interested in it and it showed.

And then summer hit and things dried up.  Wasn't a month after the PSP launch March or April 2005?

Freshman year in college here for the DC release. Got it for Christmas and I remember it was really hyped... especially by black people for some reason. All the black kids I knew in college loved playing on the thing but the white kids I knew would stick to Nintendo (most of my college friends were huge Nintendo fans with the occasional PC gamer). I remember Hot 97 (a local rap station) had this advertisement to win a free Dreamcast that they'd play over and over again on the radio.

I was a huge taco for the Dreamcast.  I mean Nintard levels of Segafaggotry.  I was 14 and doing all kinds of odd jobs just short of sucking dick in order to scrape together enough money for a Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure, and Blue Stinger.  I couldn't even get any sleep a couple of nights before the launch I was so excited.  Then to see it get cancelled was painful and was probably the last time I was a fanboy over anything again.

Edit: I too want the Vita to tank for selfish reasons.  I think once the thing gets cracked wide open, it will be the ultimate media playing device.  With any luck, next year I can snag a new or almost new Vita in box for $100 in some clearance sale.

You would think you would want it to succeed so that it actually has a game library you can play on it in the future instead of just being a "I bought it for $100" doorstop.

$250 system with 500 games and maybe 50 AAA quality titles.
vs
$100 system with 100 games and maybe 10 AAA quality titles.

Seems like the first is the better value.

For what it's worth Just Add Water apparently got Stranger's Wrath HD running on Vita within a week on the work of a single programmer, and the full polished port will have been done within weeks. That's an indie studio not getting the direct backing of Sony.
