i got really annoyed on the penultimate dungeon (usual atlus shit, monster exploding in your face getting insta game over and such) and then i just spoiled myself the rest on the internet
besides i wouldn't really call it a murder mystery, nobody really seems to care about "who did it" as much as "we have to save the next character until we run out of playable character" when the plot happens and wacky slice of life shit when the plot doesn't happen, actualy that's a pretty good comparison
P3/P4 = Slice of life anime
in fact there is even less mystery than there is in P3,in P3 you got these weird monster, this mysterious hour where everybody freeze, this weird tower... in P4 there is a murderer on the loose and... that's it,there aren't any suspect,no evidence, the plot moves forward simply because there are more "victims" and the victims are the focus but the game never seems to give a rat ass about who's doing it until near the end
now i know that not having finished the game this might come of as pretentious but...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the plot twist seems kind of pointless, like the only reason it happens is because they tought "dude! plot twists are cool!" there is no reason or evidence for him to be the murderer nor does it change much in the story, does it matter if the villain is some random minor NPC you know about instead of some random minor NPC you don't know about?
this feeling actualy doubled when i heard that after finishing the game, there is a bonus dungeon where it turns out that the first NPC you meet is actualy a.... god? what the heck? what's next? the fridge in your house is actualy an alien? there is no point in this
my megaten listing for PS2 megaten:
SMT3 > DDS2 > Raidou 2 > P3 > P4 > DDS1 > Raidou 1
yes SMT3 is awesome, which is why i liked strange journey,it was the closest they got to SMT3,the rest of the megaten games are "meh"
raidou premise is super cool but the game is choke full of fetch quest and annoying bits, raidou 2 fixes this and that but ends up recycling a lot of the material of the original and ends up feeling more of the same
DDS... i hate the ability system, the thing that i like in SMT3 is that you have to adapt as you keep playing, you have to introduce new demons in your party to keep up in strenght but at the same time, you have to be carefull to have the right demon for the jobs, but when i can just handpicks the ability i want all of this just get thrown in the garbage,i also really hate the fact that your SP don't get stored yet at the same time each skill set cost money so you have to keep paying for new skill sets
also i know that the whole point was to have a more story focused game but even that feels wrong,in SMT3 you got all these character with their own philosophies and in DDS everyone is a walking caricature, there is this girl with pink hairs and a tear tattoo under her eyes that spends every single line of her dialogue going "buuhuu killing is wrong,i don't want to kill : ' (" it's like watching the power ranger but without the explosions
yes DDS is probably the worst megaten games so the ranking would go
SMT3 > P3/P4 > Raidou1/2 > DDS
