I'm tempted to buy Disgaea, but I'll wait for something cheaper.

Mortal Kombat is pretty fun.  Story mode is handled really well.

People both over and under exaggerate about the graphics.  Alone the graphics good enough; combat is fast and smooth enough that you can't notice it.  But playing story mode it keeps jumping between prerendered scenes with the console assets and the Vita version and there's a very noticeable downgrade there.

I haven't played the story mode yet, but the game looks fine until you execute an X-Ray or a Fatality, then it's pretty jarring. The models up-close look like something out of a PSP game. I dislike the look so much that I started avoiding performing them.

It's still fun and I appreciate how smooth it plays, but I wish they've optimized the interface for the Vita: They could have integrated a touch-controlled UI, larger UI elements/menus, a non-squished font, and a sharper HUD. It's pretty much rushed and untouched in some aspects, especially presentation, giving me the feel I'm playing it through remote-play.

At least when the Dreamcast died it was pure fun until the lights went out.  Vita is like a funeral process that takes several years to complete.

I suck at Mortal Kombat.  I hate the block button.  It makes sense in 3D fighters but in 2D fighters my brain's natural impulse is "HOLD BACK."  And it doesn't help that the AI has two states: turtle or sick nasty combos.  Meanwhile I'm doing basic movies because every time I familiarize myself with a character the story switches me to the next one as it ramps up difficulty. There isn't much of an opportunity to mess around with the new character.

difficulty feels like:
1-2-3-switch-4-5-6-switch-7-8-9

it should feel like:
1-2-3-switch-2-3-4-switch-3-4-5

Still, it's much better than story modes in other fighters.  Smash Bros Brawl's subspace emissary similarly had a story mode to introduce you to all the characters (if you consider it a fighting game).  Every fighting game should have something similar + Kumite mode once you found a favorite character.

And my thumb hurts lol.  What I like about the old Bleach fighting games on the DS is how all special moves are on the touch screen.  Something similar could've worked here.  I already touch the xray bar for that move instead of L+R.  Or put more 3D fighters on handhelds, because I never had a problem with those on the PSP.

Can't you read Japanese? There are quite a few upcoming or recent games I'm interested in from Japan . Unfortunately, many of them aren't going to get a translation and those who are might take a while.

• DJMax Technika Tune (well, it's almost Japan)
• Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F
• Malicious: Rebirth
• Phantasy Star Online 2
• Samurai & Dragons
• Soul Sacrifice
• Surge Concerto: Ciel Nosurge (both volumes)
• The Legend of Heros: Zero no Kiseki Evolution
• Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta

In Europe, all I'm looking forward to this summer are three pinball games and maybe Little King's Story if the framerate isn't awful.

Returning to PC would be great.  (has Xseed talked about Ys 6 on Steam?)

3DS is smart for Falcom.  I still think every Japanese portable game should be treated like that 999 sequel.  Same game on both Vita and 3DS (and PSP).  Vita version is native res, better frame rate; the "HD collection" to the 3DS version.

Obviously at this point it benefits the Vita more, but I'm sure you can downport Ys for the 3DS.  Or port the PSP games to the 3DS.  Nayuta on 3DS has a better chance of making it over than a PSP game in 2013.

This is a serious blow, imo. Losing the exclusivity of Falcom's titles makes me further question the reason this device exist. They insist on transforming it into a companion device, and nothing more.

since i got really bored of unchained blades,i've been trying gungnir, stop me if you heared this,an evil empire called menacing empire name holds in subjugation the land of fantasy name but a group of rebels called heroic rebel group name has decided they had enough and decide to kick the empire ass,but before that the hero meet a mysterious girl called bland name and discovers he has the power of mcguffin name

man SRPG adlib is no fun i tell ya

so anyway being a sting game this game is full of weird rules and such which is what makes it interessing in the first place, there are a lot of gimmicks in this game, these include

1. character don't have stats, when they level up instead their carrying capacity gets bigger, which let's them hold more powerfull items, items give a character all their stats and skills
2. death is sort of permanent sort of not,it works like this,if a character gets finished by a really strong attack, then he's dead and you can't use him in battle's anymore, but if he gets killed by scrappy damage he retreats and you can field him the next battle with an HP penality, with enemies if they retreat you get a random item from them but if you kill them you can choice which one you want
3. there is a job system but there are no skills, each job just gets to hold different items, tough i fear this is going to make some jobs too similiar
4. each time you move, you gain tactics point, these points can be used to execute team attacks or activate special skills, but if you hold them some weapon get stronger so you have to balance it out, this also making holding out your position a bad idea as you constantly want to move around
5. at the start of each battle, you need to declare a commander, different commanders use different unit betters so say the hero is good at using archers while his brother is good at using knights, the commanders you can pick are fixed so there are some missions where you can't pick the hero and as such you need to balance your team
6. when you give a character a weapon he initialy suck at using it,but as you keep using it,it's attack power improve and when you have used it enough you can unlock additional attack which comes with area attacks, more damage and status effect
7. each attack has a number between 1 and 4,and each character also has a number and as such if a character keep using an attack with which he's matched,he'll gain some bonus like "improved chance of dealing status effect" or "more damage" and such, the number also dictates if your character can counterattack or not,as you can only counterattack if your pair of shoes and the attack number matches
8. spread over the map there are base's,holding more bases let you hold more tactics point, better yet it gives you more range when it comes into executing team attacks
9. each character also has an element, this is dictates by his initial element's,his equipment and mostly amusing the terrain where he's standing,so if you go into water there's a chance you'll automaticaly turn from neutral to water or from fire to neutral
10. there is an ATB a-la final fantasy tactics (game also takes the idea of spell charging from final fantasy tactics and as such is it possible to get out of the way before a spell goes off) but it works with it's own spin, you see when your turn comes you can use ANY character so if you want you can even solo the whole map with a single character, the catch is that after you use a character he has to cool down for a few unit of times,if you use his turn again before he cool's down, his max hp get a penality like if he retreated
11. another amusing way in which it breaks FFT,you can jump down from a height higher than your jump rating but if you do so,you hurt yourself and lose your turn
12. speaking of unit of times, you can instantly call your turn by spending tactics point = how much you had to wait+2
13. there are no job change,if you want new unit you go in a mercenary guild and simply throw money at it,if you want a unit in particular you can get it by wasting one of your weapons otherwise what you get it's random and you get a penality too if you don't find anything you want,so for example if you want an archer you can pay 10,000 gold and waste a bow

and uh... i don't think i'm missing anything, the cutscene too feels a little inspired by final fantasy tactics,i think it's the background that do it for me,i mean watch
#t=4m58s

Quote
i'm really liking gungnir, which is weird because i usualy hate SRPG,there is so much shit going on,everytime there is a new battle i spend like 5 minutes just thinking into how i can reshape my party, and the best part is that since there are no character stat and everything is decided by the item you hold,i can just introduce a new character in my party without any grinding effort

the AI is a little bit dumb tough,i blocked a bridge with a knight and the AI just stood there dumbfounded while i was nuking it's unit with spells

a while ago i had 2 classes that both used daggers one were the assassin's and the other were the tricksters and as such i had no idea why there were two of them, well it turns out that trickster have special access to dagger which let them place traps around so it's another element added to the game

the weapons have tons of special effect too, right now i got a claw that make an enemy physical defense skyrockets but it 0% their magic defense,i guess this can be abused in a map where the enemy has a huge defense or such

Quote
moar gungnir! one of the stage is an assault at a castle, the stage begins with a pretty powerfull boss unit starting near you who attacks you first,on top of the castle there are 2 succubus who just chills out,but as soon as night comes they swoop down from the castle and start charming your guys so you have to beat the boss before the succubus come or else you are screwed!

the next stage has a pretty fun gimmick too,the whole thing happens on a chasm and most enemy unit have attack that knockback you,but if a unit get knocked into the chasm,he falls down below and die instantly,i got knockback attack from the previous stage and i made a massacre simply by pushing people into death and abusing scramble (the ability to call your turn without waiting it to come around) when you push someone into a chasm the game declares "GO TO HELL!" :lol

what i really like about the game it's that it's all about preparations, there are a bajillion of items and each single one of them has some sort of gimmick in it,there is an axe that is very powerfull but it works only if you are at full HP for example, the bows aren't different in a way that a bow is stronger than the other, the bow are different in that one bow might be better at striking enemy at far distance while another might works better for closer enemies, does the boss have a very powerfull piece of armor that absorb most blows, use an axe that break's it! the enemy has a high chance of blocking your attacks? there is an item that lower their guard chance, the main character weapon is HEAVILY affected by tactics point and when you fill them up,his attack hurts a lot, there is an item that can boost this even further which let you do incredible amount of damage (even better the main character has an innate drain ability so you don't even need to heal him up) most review complains that the CPU just gang up on you, totaly ignoring any option to solve this like using weapon's with sleep effect so you can manage crowds better

i wouldn't pronounce myself if the game is worth 30$ because for all i know it might get worse later on,but i wouldn't trust review that complains you can't rack experience in a game where level doesn't really matter either :derp

Ok, Time Travelers is pretty cool.  They're doing a good job at taking the reading out of books, which is super super pro for me since I'm a lazy gaijin who hates reading Japanese.  Sitting back and watching a choose-your-own-adventure-novel in cutscene form sounds great ;)

Just wish the framerate was smoother.  Graphics aren't even that good, but framerate is like in the 20s.

There's not a lot to say, it's pretty much LBP2 in portable form, with more tools and materials that suit touch/gyro control. Felt like they turned down the floaty physics a bit, jumping seemed tighter. It's really good, and I played a few created levels which were as good as any iOS platformer game (and with better controls).  There was an included game in the silhouette style of Limbo that you wouldn't have known had anything to do with LBP, it looked so different.  MP was laggy but still fun.  LBP and AssCreed III are the only future games I'll regret not being able to play now that I have sold my Vita.

Eh, it just takes one Monster Hunter-level game to get back on top in Japan.  Western devs certainly don't give a shit, it seems.

Since the PSP still gets support overseas, I keep wondering if Sony will end up releasing an upgraded model with an improved screen/smaller size or something.

Carmack mentioned the Vita in his keynote! Something along the lines of "It might be fun to make some idTech4 games for the Vita, but mehhhhhhhh."

Whenever someone says "It might be fun to work on the Vita," all they need a second person to ask "Why?"  Carmack is smart enough to figure it out on his own.

His Zenny overlords definitely won't let him do that.  I can't wait until the day his bosses pull the chain HARD so he can realize what a dope he was to sell.

He already seemed a little bummed out that Zenimax closed down id's mobile studio and told them to release more than one AAA title a decade.

I kind of wanted FIFA on my Vita, but then the iOS version is .99 and has most of the same features so...

I don't know why Sony hasn't gotten EA to do cross play features in their games. Apparently Criterion is doing it with Need for Speed Most Wanted but I kind of suspect that's not a game people are going to buy both SKUs to play.

Lately, Sony has fewer moneyhats with which their haberdashery is festooned.

Sound Shapes is pretty cool. There's a little heft to your ball thing so platforming does feel a bit weird at first, but you get used to it really quickly.

Sound Shapes is really good. I just started playing the Stepbrother album and the change of pace and mechanics is awesome. If every album is going to offer a distinct take on the formula, then it'll be really interesting to see user created levels that integrate bits from here and there.

I already like how the community section is laid out, let's hope it populates in an interesting manner. Buy 1 get both and cloud saves was a really good route to take with this game as well.
