Does that cross-buy stuff apply to retail copies or just PSN?

The PS3 purchases can be done via PSN or at retail. The free Vita versions will only be issued in PSN codes though.

Teraway looks genuinely interesting? It's exactly what Vita needs - original Ip that makes use of the consoles capabilities/special controls. They may just get in the way and be annoying though so time will tell. Nice to see that at least they're trying.

"Sony engineers working on PS Vita 'cost reduction' for post-2012 price cut"

(Image removed from quote.)

You know if they lower the price maybe they can actually get the thing to have some sales momentum.

I'm contending that a hardware manufacturer seeking to cut costs sometime in the future isn't exactly noteworthy.

Yoshida should've said they were planning on pulling a Nintendo and charging more for the same hardware next year.

Man, he already beat that two years ago by charging more for the same hardware but with the inability to play the physical media the games were pressed on.  Fuckin' Nintendo, copying again, and *still* half-assing it.

Nah, DSi dropped before PSPgo.

Sony acknowledged mistakes in marketing the PlayStation Vita as said by Sony PlayStation Germany Chief Uwe Bassendowski at gamescom.

The most important mistake was to lose sight of the younger audience, a mistake they want to make right again. According to Bassendowski they want to change the direction of PS Vita marketing to focus on a younger audience and they want to improve their presence in corresponding media.

Furthermore Bassendowski confirmed that 2.2 million device have been sold worldwide. Specific numbers for Germany were not given.

2.2 million seems decent for a system that has only been out in some countries for a few months.

Meanwhile nothing worth bothering with this month- Ragnarok Odyssey got pushed back to October in the U.S.  An English language Asian version is out, but likely will not work with U.S players online.

DSi was released before PSPgo. It was Nintendo essentially charging more for the same hardware. Yes, there were two janky cameras and the CPU got a boost but meh same thing.

LOL, what marketing?  Sony handled the Vita launch like one would handle lighting a bag of dog shit on someone's porch.  Not to mention the snub at E3, in spite of nearly a couple of dozen Vita games on the floor from third parties.

I know Sony could fuck up a cup of coffee but if I were a Vita owner, I'd be pissed at how Sony basically abandoned this machine before it had a chance.

Bork, I know you're running defence pretty hard for this lame duck, but that is literally the slowest selling system since the Virtual Boy and one of the slowest selling major hardware releases of all-time.

I'm not though.  My "stance" is neutral.   I'm surprised- I thought the Vita was supposed to have sold around 1 million units worldwide.

Yeah, they did a completely piss-poor job letting people know this system even EXISTS.

Weren't people saying "60 games on the show floor"?  What happened to that?

I know I'm the only one here who is taking an optimistic view of things, but I'll wait and see how things are with the system next year.  I posted this already, but there are still more games coming out for the Vita I'd be interested in purchasing than what's coming out on the 3DS for the rest of the year.  Seems like it is already getting tons of Wii-level shovelware.

It was 30, and there was indeed 30 different Vita games on the floor. At Sony's press conference they showed 2 - a port of their janky smash clone, and Ass Creed. Footage of CoD was rightfully classified info.

As for the numbers, they're terrible. The platform in its current form is dead in the west and I don't see it changing. Maybe SCEE can find some success in non-UK markets, but SCEA in the US? Nope. Japanese sales aren't any better but I still think SCEJ can salvage the situation. I just hope sales are good enough to where companies can justify localizing any cool Japanese games. I don't want another PSP situation. :(

I don't know how any sane person can be optimistic on the Vita's chances in any region.  Sony's even coming out and saying they're having a really difficult time getting third parties to take chances on it.  If Sony are actually admitting that, the reality's got to be pretty dire.  What's worse, Vita isn't even close to being the biggest problem on Sony's plate, so it's truly likely to be left to wither while more pressing concerns are addressed.

I'm looking at what's important for SCE. For SCEA, and SCEE PS4 is more important than any handheld. For SCEJ that's probably not the case. Japan's a market dominated by handhelds, and unless some weird miracle happens the PS3 successor probably will sell less in Japan than its predacessor. That means SCEJ needs Vita to gain some form of market.  Of course, Sony could just say fuck it and force everyone onto Gran Turismo 6 so that it doesn't take 4 years again.  :lol

it's a product most didn't want in the first place.  a year from now even more people will own smartphones, and 99.9% of those people are not gonna have any desire to get their gaming fix through an additional portable device that costs hundreds of dollars.  r.i.p. vita

as a sidenote, i played a vita today and i made me wish i still had my psp around. pretty fun! just not worth $300 fun

Well, the 3DS is the only place to go for the newest handheld Nintendo games.  If people didn't give a shit about Mario or Pokemon, the 3DS would now be where it was at pre-price drop and pre-Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.  Sony doesn't have anything with that kind of cachet (it might have with Gran Turismo before they fucked it up) to pull it out of the dregs.  Hence, Vita being fucked.

3ds sells because its a kids toy.  despite what it may feel like after spending too much time on gaf, nintendos franchises are still designed to appeal to 10-year-olds.  vita is not marketed as a kids toy, and does not have lots of well-known franchises, so it gets passed up by parents.  plenty of adults like more involved games than your standard ios shite, but not enough to spend hundreds of dollars for them (like me!) instead we just content ourselves with whats available on the cheap til someone finds a good way to make a substantial game that can sell for cheap on smartphones.

There's no PS Vita version of Platinum Games hack and slash Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance because Sony's handheld can't cope with one of its key mechanics.

The spin-off, which stars cyborg ninja Raiden, has a free cutting system that lets players slice and dice enemies any way they see fit - and it's this mechanic Vita can't cope with.
"As of now we aren't considering a Vita version," Kojima Productions creative producer Yuji Korekado told Eurogamer at Gamescom. "The reason is one of the main appeals of Metal Gear Rising is this option of the free cut. That requires a lot of hardware power, which is only possible with the power of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

It's not really a surprise though. Platinum's engine isn't exactly top of the line, and the game itself was never announced for Vita. It's probably likely that Rising could run on Vita, but Platinum ain't gonna care if they can't even get a PC version done.

Don't understand where that came from.  Who said the game was for Vita?   ???

Would rather see Bayonetta ported (to make up for the AWFUL PS3 Sega-shit port) and/or Max Anarchy.  The latter with cross-play would be awesome.

No one said it was for Vita, Eurogamer asked why. Konami said Vita couldn't handle it. Real answer is they probably don't think Vita would be worth putting a lot of effort into Platinum's engine to get it running.

I believe Kamiya said that they were looking to make Bayonetta 2 a handheld game recently.

Probably for GREE.

I think the XL and NSMB2 will cause things to pick up somewhat, but definitely not the way the Lite/NSMB did for DS.

The sooner Nintendo comes out with an actual, aesthetically-pleasing revision and a mainline Pokemon, the better.

nah, i think all of gravity rushes touch controls could be pretty easily mapped to the shoulder buttons.  none of it feels necessary

Sure...but it plays much better with the gyro stuff.  You don't have to use the gyro controls in the Vita version either- it just feels like the game was designed to work with them.

Uncharted would be a plus on PS3, but it would have to be released as a low-priced downloadable title.  :p

It was originally designed to be a PS3 game but was switched midway through development.  I'm sure they will get it to work.
