I'm really excited for this. I just hope Sony doesn't dial up their bitchiness and screws every poor user who got suckered into buying their platform even more! If they do, I hope home-brewers crack this thing wide open so I that don't have to be at their mercy.

He's right.  He's absolutely right.  I mean, as we all know, once the PSP was hacked, the platform TOTALLY DIED.  No more games were released for it after 2005.

.....

Oh, wait.

.....

Oh, wait.

It kinda did die in the west. Sure, in Japan (where the system was hugely popular due to catering to Japanese whims) software sales didn't really die. But in America the sales nose-dived after a while. I mean, hell: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment isn't announced for localization and a year ago Innocent Sin was released. It must've sold BADLY for Atlus to not have announced it by now.

Plus you have people like Victor Ireland that want to put PSP titles out but know that the PSP is a poisoned well in the west since 1) those niche JRPG titles won't sell a lot to cover costs and 2) even if there was a market the PSP piracy rate has been pretty bad to suck up sales.

That doesn't mean OMG PIRACY KILLED THE PSP, but it was a factor. Another being that due to said piracy the west didn't want to put western-focused titles on the system (well that and general apathy from the west in the first place) to where "dudebro" titles didn't really come outside of the GTA series that was popular at the time.

I mean, let's be honest, the Vita has nothing to lose at this point.  Hacking it will kill sales?  You can't kill what's already dead.

Positive is more hardware sales from pirates and the legit hackers. The negative is that the sales won't come. But that's partially because Sony is repeating the same mistakes they made with the PSP.

My friend recently bought a vita and called it a shit box and that sony were crooks because it wasnt backwards compatible and had no games(he likes rpgs like me).

I really dont understand the mentality of Sony sometimes.  If they released a Blu-MD vita that was backwards compatible witht he psp that would have sold much more imo.

Er-There's

Persona 1
Persona 2: IS
Persona 3: Portable
Suikoden (okay, this one isn't available in America or Europe)
Disgaea 1
Disgaea 2
Final Fantasy Tactics (granted, not the best port but...)
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Final Fantasy 1
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy 4
...
...
...

etc. on PSN right now (Okay, FF3 isn't out yet but it's coming) and there's more on PSX as well if he has/hasn't played them like Front Mission 3, Parasite Eve, Wild Arms...?

I can't fault him for thinking it's a "scam" because of having to rebuy and be at the mercy of Sony/licensors for RPG's to be put on the system but if there's one thing the Vita has, it's (some of) the PSP's back catalogue of JRPGs, the ONE thing it had as a claim to fame.

(Unless he likes WRPG's only, in which case safely ignore my point because the PSP never had any of those and the only decent WRPG on the Vita so far is that Diablo clone from Gameloft of all people)

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6244-Sonys-Begging-For-Piracy

Is he right?

Is Jim Sterling ever right? No.

Except in certain cases he is in this case. The fact that Sony's 1st party titles like Wipeout 2098 (or whatever the Vita title is) has dropped in price in retail stores but hasn't dropped in price in over a month after that price-drop on PSN is absolutely ridiculous and people are gonna go with the cheaper/faster option in general. Not gonna drop your DD service's prices to be competitive with retail or have sales? People are gonna go physical. Hey, that's great and all but you may not see a dime of that cash. And hell, if people wait longer and  the Vita gets cracked they may just go around Sony's carts and PSN because Sony has to be absolutely a pain in the ass in wanting to give them money.

I love the Vita hardware but the fact I can't get Uncharted: Golden Abyss digitally for less than $30 (more like $20-25 for me) right now is stupid. The fact that Wipeout Vita is $30-40 (forgetting the price currently) on PSN versus retail is stupid.

Then add in the DRM schemes and issues of having to deactivate physically in the hardware itself instead of remotely --Good luck managing your two handheld slots if your Vita dies and you have another Vita tied to that account-- into the mix and well...

Throw in proprietary memory cards that cost 2x as much as one of your games digitally for max storage space if you want to go the digital route and well....

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/177331/Sony_avoids_PSPs_mistake_by_encouraging_fewer_home_console_ports.php
Quote
Sony's marketing VP for handhelds and consoles John Koller admits that PS Vita's message of "console-like games on portables" is essentially the same as PSP's, but argues that there was a significant problem with how developers approached that idea before.

"The issue that happened with PSP is we got overrun with ports," he explains to Gamasutra. "It became very difficult for us to define what made PSP unique. The content development became a bit unstructured or decentralized, in that we got a lot of content that was on PlayStation 2 and got thrown over to the handheld."

Koller believes Sony learned its lesson with that problem on PSP and is actively taking steps to avoid repeating that mistake on PS Vita. He says portable content "isn't something consumers play because they've left the living room. It's something that [needs to be] unique, and defines the Vita experience."

A lot of PS Vita's early catalog has so far been made up of console ports -- which may have contributed to the troubles Sony has faced with building momentum for the system so far -- but now the company is strongly recommending against and guiding publishers away from ports.

Koller points to a couple upcoming PS Vita exclusives that are unique interpretations of popular console franchises, and says that Sony tells publishers to "Follow what Ubisoft is doing with Assassin's Creed. Follow what Activision is doing with Call of Duty."

With that approach in mind, Koller says, "The messaging is similar [between PSP and PS Vita], but I think the output is going to be quite different."

I got no problem with ports. PSP getting JRPG ports like Disgaea to grind on the go is completely fine with me. The issue is that western devs really don't want to put effort into new IP/new takes on series in addition to those "console on the go" ports.  :-\

I'm really hoping Ubisoft does more to tailor Ass Creed to the Vita's strengths then they did shoe-horning AC1's gameplay systems onto the PSP with that one PSP AC game. That PSP game was a good tech demo that the PSP could do that stuff, but what is the point of releasing it when there was no pedestrians or other things in that game because fully realizing the AC1 experience would bring the PSP to it's knees? I've got this irrational fear that AC3:Liberation is gonna be like that or something even though screenshots show that it's not gonna be.

What kind of idiot just buys a system without doing any research to see if it has games he likes, or even that it doesn't have a UMD drive?  It's not like the lack of physical backwards-compatibility is some well-kept secret.

Fair enough, the lack of initiative on SCEA's part regarding Vita's digital store front is amazingly bad. In every regard they've failed. The lack of sales, the lack of PSP games (Peace Walker still isn't up on the Vita store in the US - though, it's transferable from PS3), the sham that PS1 Classics is (these guys didn't put a single one up on the Vita Store last week, and decided to put up 20 last night), and the complete lack of communication on what's even going on is absurd to see from a company that has other branches doing it so much better. Vita's got a lot to improve on, and so does Sony but I don't think the faults the system has encourage piracy.

Sony does actually allow remote deactivations now btw. You can do it at SonyEntertainmentNetwork.com but in usual Sony fashion there's some weirdness involved. You have to deactivate all devices associated with that account at once, and it can only be performed online once every six months.

Well, his conclusion's right.  The output is going to be very different between the PSP and the Vita.  But not in the way he's trying to spin, methinks.

Also, lol - the company is strongly recommending against and guiding publishers away from ports, but their own first party lineup for the rest of this year is mostly ports.

Koller is a marketing guy. The kind who says ridiculous stuff a lot. He realistically has no say in what goes on in regards to software. I'm happy for that last bit because if the marketing campaign for Vita is any measure of what he's capable of, oh boy ...

I have no plans to sell mine, but I'm not interesting in a floaty physics platformer. PS+ just announced they will add Vita content, so perhaps I'll start using mine more frequently. There are a handful of titles that I'd like to play that are still too expensive out there.

Yeah Type 0 is definition of mixed bag.

Interesting story - Presented awfully and totally nonsensical (think FFXIII)
Fantastic music - only a dozen tracks+re-arranges
Fast awesome battle system - with no depth and totally broken
Some good mission ideas - lots of bad ones including J-RTS

It's worth playing because it's a better game after you finished it and you're not playing it.  At that point you just think about the story while listening to the awesome tunes every few months and it's good memories.  While playing the game though it's fun -> wtf is this shit -> ????????

If this system truly dies, fine- I've gotten enough use of out...no use crying about it, would just stick with what would be the one-handheld future of the 3DS and then use the Vita for emulation stuff when it would be inevitably fully-hacked.

But for now there's enough games coming out (I still have launch games to get to) and coming out to keep me plenty interested.

I currently own 15 games.  Looking at the release lists again, I'm interested in the following:

-Virtua Tennis 4 (have not picked this up yet)
-Ragnarok Odyssey
-Jet Set Radio
-Street Fighter X Tekken
-Assassin's Creed III Liberation
-Need For Speed Most Wanted
-Persona 4 Golden
-Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal (if I ended up getting this I'd buy it on PS3 for the free Vita DDL)
-Call Of Duty Black Ops Declassified
-Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
-DJ Max Technika Time
-Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus  :-[
-Oboro Muramasa
-Soul Sacrifice
-God Eater II
-Toukiden
-Valhalla Knights 3

Not bad for a dead system and way more than the few upcoming 3DS games that interest me (Code Of Princess, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Castlevania).

No time for doom n' gloom.  I have too many damn games to play on all the systems as it is!

Why are you looking forward to the Call of Duty game?  It looks pretty bad.

bork's a big call of duty fan.

to my horror - i think i've finished all the console COD (including the shitty spin off shit) outside of MW3.

i wouldn't even say "guilty pleasure" - it just sort of happens. it ranks up there with chewing on sawdust.

(I enjoyed COD2 , COD:MW - the others sort of just -happened-)

(i have other series like this - given the library at home, i'm somewhat horrified when i start tagging the games i bothered to complete)

i must say i -genuinely- loved COD2. Really did. I much prefer the WW1/2 setting above all. MW (the first one) was actually a fun diversion - not the best game ever, but fun. But the series has become an almost horrible parody of itself as it's grown. Whilst the action is at it's core decent to good, it just treads water as they shit out the next instalment and try to out-controvesial the previous sitting.

I don't want to sound like i'm upset by it, just that i don't care. I'll still likely plod through them but there's no real reason to do it. In fact... i think i'm done. I've no interest in BLOPS2. In the unlikely event the Vita version doesn't chew on a mouth full of camel dick and theres a meaty bot mode thats better than anything else i -might- try it but i just can't see it.

Meanwhile, in my life of mundane... Fifa 13... <tickertape> Hurrah? </tickertape>

god i love ORDINARY.

I think I remember reading that you're from Manitoba? Yeah, I probably couldn't live there in the winter.
