Long read

http://gamasutra.com/view/feature/181082/postmortem_sony_bend_studios_.php?page=1

Quote
Written primarily by writer and director John Garvin, the following incredibly detailed postmortem follows the ins and outs of Sony Bend's development of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, the PlayStation Vita launch title and premier game.

The development of Uncharted: Golden Abyss was a perfect storm of challenges: we were a launch title for new hardware, which meant that our schedule was not flexible; we were crafting gameplay mechanics we had no experience with (traversal and the PS Vita's touch and gyro controls), which meant a huge learning curve and lots of R&D time; we were creating a rendering engine that used next-gen shader techniques, which meant our artists had to learn an entirely new way to create assets; we were working on a franchise that was new to us, which meant we had to retool all of our processes, from the way we built assets to the way we thought about level design; and we were working on an Uncharted title, which meant an exponential increase -- from what we were used to -- in the amount of cinematics, detail, animation and polish that would be needed.

BLACK OPS DECLASSIFIED NEXT WEEK!

VITA SAVED!  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

There's still barely any official footage of it out there, yet some footage that has popped up actually looks kinda....all right.  It's missing a ton of features but still seems to be a solid game and better than Resistance was...at least for multiplayer.  The single player sounds like a joke.

COD could have been something good for the Vita, if it were a separate release and hyped up properly.  But Activision just treated the Vita like any other port-dumpster.

The weeaboo/ambiguously pedo crowd should be psyched about Persona 4: The Golden.

edit: it was really rude of me to pigeonhole persona fans like that...there could also be legitimate teenagers who like the game.  And people who are using it as therapy to "relive" their traumatic high school years in a positive manner.   An alternate high school timeline where they have friends and girlfriends and purpose.

Your CFW changed from OE to TE or something like that? I've had this issue where the firmwares wouldn't see the changed firmware from Dark Alex's CFW to post-DA's CFW's due to the way saves were saved in the CFW. You might have to do a bit of hassle to get a CFW app to load the save and then save again to where it's "overwritten" in the newer CFW process.

It looks better than Resistance. Question is: Does it control better? As it is, I don't think the hardware's gonna have a "killer app" FPS until Killzone (being done by Guerrilla in-house?)'s outing.

As far as Uncharted: It's a good game with the only blemish being the stupid gyro sniper controls. Dunno who at Bend thought that was a good idea, but I want to smack them in the face. Repeatedly.

Killzone: Mercenary is a Sony Cambridge x GG joint. I believe Cambridge were merged with them (Yes, I know they're in two different countries, I'm not sure how that happened).

Oh, Ragnarok Odyssey demo will be released next week in North America.

It's the first "in-house" Sony company that has support of the previous/console devs to put some effort into it. It's probably the first game to show what FPS'ers can do on the platform if done right. Resistance was supposed to be that, but it was given to a B-team with the original devs not helping/shaping the game.

Of course, before you point out Uncharted/Bend: Bend has a history of playing source material and then trying to fit the source-material onto the platforms they design for. Whereas Nihilistic doesn't really have that.

Cambridge and Guerrilla doing it together has a better chance of going "hey, this is what a FPS should be on the platform" instead of Call of Duty: Phoned-in Declassfied and Resistance: Rushed to get out at Launch.

The big fish-little pond effect in action

Or, basically: This.

Though, IIRC Cambridge did the PSP LittleBigPlanet title which was a noble effort but not really "fitting the game onto the handheld." It was a decent try, but too many sacrifices made instead of going their own way to downport LBP1's engine to the PSP. So who knows, maybe Killzone will be similar. Trying to shoehorn Killzone 3 onto the Vita.

that all sounds like it's from a tech/design standpoint.   I'm talking about the games themselves.

Okay, fair enough: the IP hasn't really been "mainstream" in the likes of Uncharted or God of War, but still: If the handheld's version is good with effort behind it, I'm sure most people would get over the Killzone textures and art-style and play it over something that was phoned in like Resistance or Call of Duty on the platform.

Holy fucking shit.

I have to say that this is shaping up to be one of the biggest hot messes in recent gaming history. The GAF OT hits the nail on the head, especially with the "features" list, where you can sense the passive-aggressiveness and disdain Nihilist (or at least their community management team) are showing towards Acti/Sony. I don't blame them, I hold those two more responsible for this debacle, what with the shadily short cycle and almost unprecedented embargo.

It does have that endless hostiles mode, but yeah, the focus is on the multiplayer.  The back of the box barely mentions anything single player, in fact.

But BLOPS Declassified is...good!?   :o  Much better than Resistance was.  It's the best portable FPS I've ever played.

Too bad that is really not saying much.

The game is scaled-down and uses smaller maps, but that makes the eight player matches not feel so empty and the game really feels like Call Of Duty despite its flaws.

The controls are pretty well done; I had to turn the sensitivity way down and turned off the auto-run and was able to jump right in.  A lot of players really, REALLY suck online and I think it has to do with the auto-run and aiming settings.  If you don't adjust them, you aim all over the place.

Encountered one odd glitch (unless it was cheating somehow) where everyone on my team would respawn, immediately die, and respawn again.  It kept saying that a single player on the other team was killing everyone.   :lol :-\

But at least I was able to keep on playing-- BLOPS II already locked up my 360 once.

Is it 60FPS?

Naw.  It's 30 FPS max (I think) and it's not consistent.

Quote
I'm going to assume Activision agreed to a COD for Vita and didn't think anything of actually making it until Sony came around banging on the screen door. Activision then slipped out the basement window and hurriedly handed off a flash drive filled with various assets like textures and fonts to Nihilist and told them to do....something. Well hey, that commitment has been filled so hooray! Weren't Sony saying how easy it was to port PS3 games to the Vita or was that fanboy crazy talk? Either way, kinda embarrassing it doesn't even have a decent story mode or many features from the console versions.

Why wont Sony just kill this fucking thing already? Just offer people an Xperia phone, a Walkman MP3 player or some PlayStation 3 games for free. I dunno, just SOMETHING. This is really embarrassing. I used to think the 3DS was a failure but man, this is bad.

Vita's sales may be pathetic, but it has good games.  CoD is, surprisingly, one of them.  Again, it's not like this is saying much, but it's the best portable FPS out there.  I can see it getting reamed for the short single player content...by people who for whatever reason think that's more important than the multiplayer.

Jesus. Poor Vita can't catch a break, if I had a Vita I'd be interested in a good casual shooter like CoD if it was on par with console version bar graphics...

The multiplayer is good.  I have no idea if the single player sucks (Don't play these games for single player content) but they did a good job of making a competent mobile version of CoD.  Casuals are going to like it...I guess.  I mean are there any "casual" Vita players?   ???

The few reviews that are out are panning it with a 4/10. It's not surprising though given Need For Speed: Most Wanted, and Assassin's Creed: Liberation were criticized for not being as feature filled as the console iterations despite being a third less in price. CoD was going to get blasted given it's only $10 cheaper than the console game.

Oh yeah, btw the PSN and bundle version doesn't include the free PSP game, lol.
