fuck yeah folders!

and I will wait and see with Guacamelee.   So many "metroidvania" games that are not worth playing vs. just replaying either a metroid or sotn-style CV game.

one thing i wish they'd fix with the browser is how the page resizes itself after loading. i don't know how to describe it...like it loads 90% of the way, then say you want to use a text input box, you press it, but then the page suddenly resizes after it hits 100% loaded and thinks you've clicked whatever is in the box's place.   does anyone know what i'm talking about

I know exactly what you're talking about. It's so annoying when browsing. You zoom in while it's still loading and it suddenly goes back to its initial full display when the page is done loading.

There should be a Guacamelee demo.  Well, one exists and we'll see if it's released on PSN.

My concern about the length is that most of the time will be spent fighting than exploring.  I played Dust on XBLA last year, and it was great and all, but much of the 10+ hours were spent fighting enemies. Sometimes these Metroid style games don't do a great job balancing the exploration to fightin ratio.  Otherwise ~5 hours sounds fine.

Verify which PS Vita card you are using by looking at the home screen’s info bar. You can also save the layout of your home screen icons in the memory card.

I haven't done account switching since launch since it's a pain.  Is it easier these days?

IIRC bork said you could skip the intro video now but it still fucked up the icon placement.

that's right,  the zooming.   crazy annoying since I'm usually using it for gamefaqs while i'm playing something and it always looks fully loaded before i try to find something, then i end up on an ad page, which is just below the search bar.

yup gamefaqs is the first site that came to my mind, then thebore :lol
I wish there was a way to block ads on the psv though...

Also while this update is nice and all, I gotta say it's fucking mindblowingly stupid how a multimedia high end device like the PS Vita lacks basic fucking functions and the issues won't even get fixed with the upcoming update. I mean seriously, only 10 icons per folder? What the fuck is wrong with these people? Why is vita's OS such a locked and  claustrophobic piece of shit?

You would think this device would almost operate like a mini laptop of some sort but the functionality doesn't reach much further than a knock-off handheld device that you can buy in a kids toy store.

I'm guessing its cause folders caused some problem in the OS that they had to resolve.  I don't know much about programming but afaik, changing one thing can introduce bugs into other things that previously worked.   Either that or they're artificially trickling out functionality so the updates look more substantial.
Like iOS/iTunes finally introduced the ability to queue songs without messing with playlist shit...which my Rio Karma did like 10 years ago.   There was 0 excuse for that, it's such a basic and user friendly feature.

Even missing basic shit and having some quirks, it's probably the best OS of any gaming console or handheld at the moment, in terms of speed, functionality, and lack of excess shit (ads, that useless PS3 rss feed that spits out gibberish most of the time.)

Still a pain in the ass, but it's not horrible to the point that I wouldn't do it again.  You can skip the video intro to make it go quicker, but when I switched back to my U.S. account from my Japanese account, I was missing games icons (had to reinstall some stuff, wtf?), icon placement was fucked, and I had to verify my PSN account to get everything back again.

this 100 icon thing is a problem for a lot of folks.  is it psn minis that are getting you to hit this limit?  Between vita, psp, and ps1 games, you couldn't hit 100 and have still have space.

speaking of PS1, these are the new PS1 imports they added this week:

► PS1
○ Evergreen Avenue – $5.99 / 317 MB
○ Favorite Dear (Jyunpaku No Yogensha) – $5.99 / 317 MB
○ Mahjong Youchien Tamago-gumi $5.99 / 80.4 MB

yeah it's fast and it's awesome how you can minimize games instantly and switch over to other apps but can't say I like how everything has a 'live area' screen. Everything has to load up. Is that really necessary to everything, even things like the settings? It seems weirdly designed.

I always envisioned this device something akin to a smartphone but with more capabilities but from what we've seen so far the power of the machine is kept in a cage and it's wrapped up by a cheap user interface that doesn't allow for any customization and on top of that lacks basic functions.

I don't know, I was going to pass on it but it looks a lot better than I thought and has gotten some great scores

I had a few dollars in my wallet, which brought the price down to $5 (with the PS+ discount), so I bit the bullet. It's #YOPO and getting high praise/reviews, so why throw some money at them? It's been a while since I did.

Unless I need to rub my eyes, Guacamelee is slightly sub-native, but runs at 60fps. It's #YOPO and supports cross-saves, so unless you've got chronic diarrhea and/or long commutes, you should be playing this on the PS3. It suffers from the same issue Sound Shapes had; everything just looks so tiny on the Vita, which is a waste for a game as gorgeous as this.

I'm still early in the game, so I can't tell you for sure. But my guts tell me it's closer to Outland's.

I mean, if you hit select and you'll get a map of all the game's locations which happen to be interconnected. Some locked behind skill-specific obstacles. But I've yet to see if it flows like one.

After spending some more time with Guacamelee, I'm happy to report that this is as close to a Metroidvania as Western indie will ever get. It's a solid game, with good pacing, and lots of character.

I might since there aren't many good translated versions. It's not like you need to learn that many symbols to be able to play it.

If it was the Vita game I probably would have gotten it. I'm sure there are better alternatives than PS1 games though.

Don, the new fw update sorta fixes that zoom problem we discussed earlier, it still makes the screen go back to the top after it loads I think... but the amount you zoom doesn't reset :bow

also you can use the analog sticks now to scroll the page and also zoom in and out :bow

Guacamelee is top quality, bros. Most fun I've had a game claiming to be a Metroidvania since the last IGAvania. On top of everything I've mentioned before, it has great puzzles and level design.

(Disclaimer: Never continued playing Shadow Complex)

(Addendum: But from what I played this game beats it handily)

It'll depend on how you're going to tackle it. I've been taking my time collecting stuff, doing challenges, and completing the few side quests. And assuming you always go for 100% in Metroidvanias you might get between 9-10 hours of play. For instance, I've only got the final dungeon left to complete, and I'm planning on backtracking after I'm done with the boss (I heard the game allows you). Anyhow, right now my world map is at 80%  and my current play-time is 8:30.

i'm a little worried about the vita version.  i will never touch it if it's on my ps3...it just can't compete with all those perennials i have on the system.

Same here. I've only cleared 15% of the game on my Vita. I'm just more comfortable playing this on a big TV with a DS3. Having said that, the Vita version doesn't suffer from any inherent problem, it's just a matter of preference.

All I can add is that it's very satisfying. The pacing and the variety of platforming puzzles were also great. So you won't see me complaining about the game's length, it just feels right.

(... Having said that, there seems to be plans of DLC, if the PS Store menu is anything to go by. I'm not sure what they're planning on adding though)

Yeah, so Jeff Minter is bringing a new Tempest game to the Vita.

We’re going to base it on the essence of the original T2K. It’ll be the pure, straightforward shooter that maybe you hoped for when you first saw Space Giraffe. We’re not going to overload you with ultra psychedelia, but we will make it fluid and colourful and awesome-looking on the Vita’s delicious, vibrant OLED screen. We’re going to give you a perfect treat for your eyes, ears and thumbs with a modern extrapolation of one of the best shooters ever made on hardware that’s just perfectly suited for it, and in a way that retains the purity of the original design.
