Green Latern: It's actually really good! lol not really
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:14:53 PM »
Quote from: New York Observer
Even in the brainless world of cinematic comic books gone bad, it's as bad as it gets -- a dumb, pointless, ugly, moronic and incomprehensible jumble of botched effects, technical blunders, and cluttered chaos.

22%, 4.6/10 average. Only 27 reviews so far, but it's not like the movie's going to pull some huge turnaround when more reviews come in.

The trailer is so fucking boring and as a Ryan Reynolds fanboy, he looks terrible in this role.  I asked my wife if we're just getting older because the trailer does absolutely nothing for me and it seems like something only a 12 year old could find interesting.

Outside of maybe half a dozen superhero movies ever that's my take on the entire genre.

yeah, just another mess of incomprehensible CGI and bullshit. Who keeps paying to go see these garbage films? What happened to good movies? I remember moviegoing in the 90's so fondly. You'd go to a film, and it would be awesome. You'd see shit like Johnny Mnemonic and Broken Arrow and stuff. Shit films still came out of course but action flicks were generally a safe bet.

I mean how hard is it to storyboard comprehensible action sequences? I'm talking coherency in the characters movements, a gauge of distance between them and their obstacles and opponents. Basic stuff which was in every fucking action film last century. Now it's all just close ups on shit, you can never figure out wtf is going on.

Very few CGI-athons have had well laid out action sequences. They were done well in Speed Racer and GI Joe, so I know it can be done. I guess it just comes down to ineptitude, and the fact that movie productions have SFX staff numbers in the multiple hundreds, thus "too many cooks in the kitchen"

Quote from: Peter Travers
Green Lantern is a new primer on how not to make a comicbook movie unless you want to screw shit up. Flat FX, smirky acting, clunky writing and clueless direction. WTF?

Quote from: NPR
Gleefully pulpy dialogue that evaporates on the comics page -- lines like, "You can't give in to fear! I know what it's like to be afraid to be afraid!" -- land with a series of heavy wet thuds on the cement floor of the cineplex.

Quote from: New York Daily News
More "Daredevil" than "Dark Knight."

Quote from: Roger Ebert
"Green Lantern" does not intend to be plausible. It intends to be a sound-and-light show, assaulting the audience with sensational special effects. If that's what you want, that's what you get.

Quote from: Minneapolis Star Tribune
A mind-numbing, misguided pandemonium that ranks as the biggest comic book misfire since "Batman & Robin" battled Poison Ivy.

Quote from: New York Times
"Green Lantern" is bad.

Sounds to me like this is a very 'DC' project i.e. a kitchen-sink fanservice project that blindly assumes that what makes for a moderately successful comic will appeal to the masses. From what I've seen of it, it is probably impossible for Joe Sixpack to give a reasonable synopsis of this movie to his buddy and make is sound appealing. So, fail.

personally, i would have loved to see a guy gardner green lantern movie - two hours of a fucking asshole with a moe haircut and a white turtleneck bearing nearly unlimited power, then at the very end an unexplained cameo where batman steps into frame and knocks him out while blue beetle and booster gold "bwahaha" in the background, and the words "FUCK EVERYONE, READ COMICS" appear on the screen

Sort of liked it but I'm finding that these movies are giving way too much to the personality of the high profile actors they've chose for the main role. They really need to stop that shit. Wait, lets go further, Hollywood needs to stop devoting 1/4 of a given movie to Ryan Reynolds shtick. Really hurts the movie.

I have to say though, the scene where Hal stops in front of the Sun was sick. The pose, the imaginary space wind thats supposed to be the Sun gravity tugging at his costume and hair.

Knew this flick would be horrible.

What do you expect when a movie studio gets its hands on one of the dumbest comic book characters of all time? It failed the same reason every Superman movie and every Hulk movie failed: overpowered super heroes without any clearly defined limitations to their abilities. Superman - unstoppable unless you're one of the very rare few who managed to smuggle rare kryptonite through customs. Hulk - invincible, especially when he's pissed. Green Lantern - a corny looking weirdo whose ring can generate virtually anything from a mini-gun to a live action porn movie. Wolverine probably falls into the same trap, as we've witnessed his inability to carry an entire movie alone.

Sorry, DC Comics fan, because as far as Hollywood is concerned, you only have one character worth banking on at the box office.

Wow you are dumb  :lol

You do know that it is possible to make great movies out of those characters, comics have proven that time and time again. The only real problem is that Hollywood has its own by the numbers way of making superhero films that churns out mediocrity that only Batman truly avoided. The Spider-man movies suck beyond belief and I'm almost sure that the new one will suck too even if I'm looking forward to it, X-Men was meh and X2 was decent but otherwise Marvel has much worse movie offerings than DC. Superman 1, 2 and even 3 plus Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins and the Dark Knight are the best superhero movies out there and Watchmen is flawed but the ultimate cut is still pretty good.

Don't blame Marvel and DC for the shitty movies, blame hollywood.

What cast member of Dark Knight Rises must die to ensure strong sympathy box office?

:rofl

Sorry if you feel that butthurt, big guy, but it's difficult to create a wonderful movie from a comic book character as shitty as Green Lantern. He's corny from top to bottom, and there's no way Hollywood producers can convince the movie audience that there's anything interesting or redeeming about a third-tier superhero. As soon as I learned that they were making this movie - before the script, director, casting, and trailer were released - I knew it was going to be vomit-inducing bad. Batman is the only real Hollywood moneymaker DC owns, the rest are potential moneypits, and the reason for that is because - well, you've made me say it - DC Comics have a gayer cast of superheroes.

22%, 4.6/10 average. Only 27 reviews so far, but it's not like the movie's going to pull some huge turnaround when more reviews come in.

Someone should have made a Booster Gold movie starring Bruce Campbell when he was young.  Woulda been great!

Probably would have been terrible, but that's still great casting, right?

And Ted Raimi could have been Blue Beetle. Tom Cruise as Maxwell Lord? Damn it Sam Raimi, why did you waste your time doing Spider-Man instead of this?

Saw the movie with my dad today and it was okay. I didn't think it was awful but it wasn't good either.
