Tech 'bore assemble! MP3 player edition
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:36:45 AM »
So, I need an mp3 player.  For a variety of reasons, I kind of don't want an ipod.  What's a good, reasonably priced alternative?  Don't need it to browse intertubes, watch video, change my oil or whatever- just want an mp3 player, preferably with a screen.

What's the word?

The guy doesn't want something expensive, nor does he want an iPod (probably because it IS expensive), and you guys recommend a Zune HD (which goes for $200+)? Never change, Bore.

And don't bother with the Sansa Fuze+. Sansa rushed that piece of shit, and if you don't believe me, check out all the 1-star reviews it got from Amazon. I recommend the older model: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Fuze-Video-Player/dp/B0015LOWD4/ref=sr_1_37?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1308466607&sr=1-37

Cheaper, more reliable, and not too flashy.

I can get a zune hd on the ebays for cheap.  Thinking about it.  Depends on how much money I get for the car I'm about to sell and how much I have to spend on the new car will dictate how much dicking around money I have.  Some of us have to pay rent and bills, bitch.

yeah the interface isn't great but it also isn't unusable.

also you may/maynot like how to put music on the device. it displays contents based on folder/file structure so you're literally creating folders and dumping music onto the removable drive when you plug it in. also i dont believe it looks at id3 tags so it lists everything in alphanumeric order.

I have a cowon D2, which is old as dirt and that that has id3 tag support, although I personally prefer just looking at the folders. I would recommend getting a cowon within the desired price range. they don't have awesome interfaces, but they are cheap and have great sound and support for various formats. I believe all of their mp3 players also have sd card slots.

I have a first-gen Sansa Fuze. I love it, especially for the seamless integration of the miniSD slot. Solid piece of kit, withstood quite a bit of punishment. The connector is an iPod-like flat piece of shit, but that's about the only thing that really bothers me.

Plays FLAC, MP3, OGG, and WAV I think. Radio, video, and picture browser. Audiobook mode and audible support. Supports one single 'to go' mobile playlist, all others need to be edited on the PC. ID3 tag based browsing, or folder based browsing, as well as a hardcoded 'last 50 songs added' playlist. You can record off the radio or the built-in microphone if you come across something memorable. Can be used as mp3 player via ms protocol, or mass storage, or both. I do believe there's a rockbox replacement firmware available, but I don't dabble in that stuff so whatever.

I'd have bought a Sansa clip had there not been a sale that got me a Fuze for the same kind of money. The big display is nice, but hardly necessary.

I haven't heard a single good thing about the newer models, so if you decide on a Sansa, better read up and get a 'good old model'.

Come to think of it, if all you want to do is listen to music then just get a reasonably priced noname mp3 player, they're a dime a dozen nowadays. Unless you really cheap out they are all reasonably useful. I really don't get the concept of spending hundreds of dollars on that stuff. That's just me, though.

I still have an older ipos that pretty much is only good while charging. battery lasts maybe an hour on a full charge.

I bought a cheapo sansa clip from amazon for working out, and it has been pretty awesome. very good battery life. I bought as a stop-gap, and it has kind of prevented me from being compelled to buy another large one.

If I had to go out and buy a new one, I would probably get the new iPod Nano w/ Multi Touch.  I know you don't want an iPod, and I can't blame you, but I want it just for the size and all the cool shit they can do.

But he's so correct.  Windows Phone 7 is my Zune HD and I love it.

Here's how I rank all the MP3 players I've ever owned.

1) Sony X-series
2) Zune HD
3) Sansa Clip
4) Classic Zune with hard drive

Also, Hifiman is supposedly really good if all you care about is sound quality.
