So Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic have been banned in Standard.

People backing up the Jace ban are just those who didn't get one and couldn't afford the $80 pre-ban price.

The Jace ban was a 100% political ban because of the value of the card and the demand for it in high-level decks.

I think the bannings are distinguished mentally-challenged. Both cards were going to rotate in like 3-4 months anyway and it's not like this makes standard enjoyable to play anyway. That said, I'll keep casting Goblin Guide on turn one for another couple of months

My group just plays with big decks with big motherfucking critters and spells. games can take awhile as epic war is waged. I need to go to the next pre-release and snag me some new cards.

No just the one Emrakul on the second turn.

In game one of that set, he channeled into an Emrakul AND a Lightning Greaves during his second turn of the game. At the end of his main phase, I Diabolic Edicted it away and summarily beat him to death with a Nantuko Shade.

In game two, I got a turn one Ensnaring Bridge off a Dark Ritual. He got a second turn Oath of Druids. I damn nearly decked out but still won, beating him to death about 25 turns into it (I had a Phyrexian Arena out) with a Nantuko Shade that he was having to chump-block with a fucking Emrakul. Think about that for a second.

Our game is anything but casual.

Sounds like you're just playing degenerate vintage. I prefer Legacy; the imposition of SOME rules makes for a better, more strategic game imo than just "HEY GUYS LOOK AT THE COOL SHIT I JUST DID, GAME'S OVER WANNA PLAY AGAIN???"

Commander decks have sold like flaming hot shitballs that everyone wants to stuff down their pants at my shop. I even gave in and bought a couple. My edh deck is Kami of the Crescent Moon, however... I decked 6 people in one turn the other day with a Teferi-Mind Over Matter-Temple Bell lock, discarding an Ulamog to get my graveyard back into the library of course. I kept asking them "isn't this terrible format FUN?" as I did it, also. Now none of them will play with me anymore, which is probably for the best.

Also, Magus- the top deck in standard right now is Cawblade, a blue-white monstrosity that piles on efficient creatures with tutor abilities and Jace the Mindsculptor, probably one of the top 5 blue cards ever printed on sheer power level. Ok, top 10 maybe. Anyway, he's fucking good. Except they just banned Jace and Stoneforge Mystic (the best creature in the deck) effective July 1st, so my guess is that the best decks in the format will become in no particular order: Exarch-Splinter Twin combo, Valakut ramp and some form of mono-red, which has a distinguished mentally-challenged wealth of options for the early, mid and late game available to it right now.

Not only that, but sales of the paper card game and MTGO cards are through the roof for the past couple years, even in a recession. Further, an independent tournament series that gives away more than $10k in cash a weekend (the StarCity games open series) has about 35-40 dates a year now. The game is in a pretty healthy state, even with the rampant dominance of one deck in standard for the past four months.

I've never been a serious player but I've been playing casually on and off for the past 15 years. I've never competed in any sanctioned tournaments other than prereleases/drafts. I still love the game, but to really be a great player requires a lot of time, as you have to stay abreast of all the latest cards and play a lot.

I should probably try and round up the guys for some cards soon.

They were in near perfect condition back in the day, all my cards were in individual plastic sleeves. I've also got lots of beta and revised Sera Angels, Vesuvian Dopplegangers, Shivan Dragons, etc.

I remember people (at least the people I played with) going nuts over them because they looked really cool, and they were tournament legal because they were just standard lands. No one even gave a crap about the actual game, it was distinguished mentally-challenged, but people would pay $2-3 a piece for the lands.

Being that I work in an actual nerd store, I can answer some of these questions, I guess in reverse order:

Unhinged lands (you said Unglued but posted pics of Unhinged lands so I'm gonna assume those are the ones you're talking about) are worth about $3. Naturally, Island is worth slightly more due to the fact that it taps for the best color of mana in the game... that and it looks f'n sweet.

As for the prices on dual lands/power, that's trickier to answer. There's really 3 answers- there's the sale price (what places like Star City Games and the place I work for will charge you to buy it), the buy price they'll give you for one and of course the ebay/individual seller price, or what I like to think of as "the real price". To further complicate matters, the condition of these old, valuable cards matters a lot to the people who are gonna buy and sell them, so if there's any imperfections it's gonna tank the value of the cards. SCG sells a NM Beta Underground Sea for $1200, buys them for $700. Normally I'd say you could split the difference if you're lucky on ebay, but I watched a nm Beta Sea go for about $1400 the other day on ebay. The market for beta duals in particular is pretty crazy right now due to the spike in prices on legacy cards that happened in February and kind of keeps fluctuating through present times.

Gundam- if you're ever serious about selling any of your stuff, let me know and I'll talk to a guy I work with who will probably give you a very good deal on any decent looking beta duals you have.

As for my most valuable card... well, in a way it's the Nissan Sentra I'm driving.

Magic cards financed the purchase of that piece of machinery. Actual cards would probably be... sadly Koth of the Hammer I guess. Sold all my legacy crap to buy this car and move.

Yeah, the guy I work with will pay you more than a shop's buy price for your stuff, pretty much guaranteed. And if he doesn't want it the nerd store I work for has very competitive (in my opinion stupidly so) buy prices.

I fucking love mill. I had a U/B standard mill deck not too long back, with sanity grinding, twincast, etc etc. It was right before Zen came out, because then I put archive traps in, I remember that much. But I loved that deck. I actually played it in sanctioned tourneys. I never did too hot, but I had fun, which is most important to me.

Also, when I get home I'll put up decklists for some of my casual decks as well so we can all laugh at them and tweak them into murder machines.

nah planeswalker cards arent creatures. Its basically another 'player' in front of you. Becuase when youre playing magic, you are delineating a planeswalker yourself.

So if some one attacks you they declare an attack on either you or Jace.
