Started playing Vagrant Story for the first time ever

THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT

I'm so confused by the skill system and the chance to  hit on some of the enemies is ridiculously low. An hour in and I'm kinda getting turned off by it.

THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT

I'm so confused by the skill system and the chance to  hit on some of the enemies is ridiculously low. An hour in and I'm kinda getting turned off by it.

that's nothing, the first dragon boss you'll fight (actualy i think the third boss might be enough!) you'll probably be able to deal only 1 damage per attack with your weapon, and then you will say that it's a crappy game, and then a matsuno fan will tell you that you are an horrible person and that you don't know how to play

anyway what most people suggest is to use a different weapon for each kind of enemies, you see for example if you use a sword against wolves, that weapon will be more effective against beast but his effect against human might decrease,so the idea is to have an anti-beast weapon,an anti-dragon weapon,an anti-human weapon,an anti-ghost weapon.....

weapon also deals 3 kind of damage, blunt, piercing or slashing, that's another thing to check when doing crappy damage,if i remember correctly this bonus is dictated by the handle of the weapon and since you can change handle's around, you should do so

to make things even worse weapon also have elemental affinities, though luckily near the middle of the game you get spells that instantly change the affinity of your weapon,so for those you don't have to worry too much but it's another thing to keep in mind

the reason you are missing a lot... you probably aren't paying attention to the risk bar,you see everytime you use a skill, the bar on the top increase, the higher that bar,the lower your chance to hit and the more damage you take (but if i remember correctly it also increase the damage you do)

there is not a lot to say about skills, all you need is timing, press the button at the right time and you'll trigger the skill, you can't use the same skill twice in a row so you need to mix it up,the easiest weapon to use for abusing skills is the crossbow, you should always keep a crossbow on yourself, you learn new one just by killing tons of enemies

as jaydubya says keeping a weapon for every kind of monster is not a bad idea but if you ask me the best thing to do is to learn those skill that let you deal damage by ignoring all that damage formula crap ASAP,the first you should be able to learn is the one that let you send 25% of the damage you receive back to the sender,if i remember correctly later on you learn one skill that let you deal damage based on how many skills you are able to use in a single attack and trust me that's way way way more usefull than anything else in the game

Thanks for the tips, guys. I caught on to affinities being important fairly early and started using that Spirit Dagger? weapon at the beginning for the undead. Constantly switching weapons seems like a chore, unless they're hotswappable. I almost died after the Golem Boss when I faced a random undead with 96 Risk level (and couldn't figure out why I couldn't land a hit on the enemy).

This.  It wasn't complicated when I first played it and I was a kid but it was incredibly frustrating.  I went to go buy a used copy a few weeks ago.  I got pissed when I saw the price.  I probably sold the copy I owned for 5 bucks or something to Gamestop years ago.  Bullshit.

Once you get Herakles, Degenerate, and Prostasia, you won't have very much trouble with the game... apart from a really annoying final boss. I loved the cutscene direction in the game, but the actual gameplay wasn't very fun.

Basically you can think of your weapon collection as the equivalent of your party in a normal (S)RPG, each weapon is like a character that you select and manage. It's ridiculous that there's no way to switch weapons quickly though.

I've always been curious about this game, intending to play it eventually. BlueTsunami's opening post has cured me of that illness.

Yeah, the interface is so slow and clunky, not to mention the X and O buttons use the typical Japanese layout of O confirm X cancel, even in the American version... which adds to the clunkiness.

Honestly I think the game is pretty overrated but I enjoyed it nevertheless, once I accepted the clunkiness and grainy PS1 3D.

I actually thought the interface worked pretty well except for the lack of fast weapon switching. It's just that's a really big flaw given how often you have to do it.

just remember that you HAVE to stuff besides your weapons because there'll be plenty of times that your inventory won't be enough.  use yr counters, buffs, whatever those skills are called, magic, EVERYTHING.  you will never have a set of weapons that can handle everything that comes at you.

the opening is the hardest part, btw.  the game gets easier as you get more abilities/spells.

god I played the shit out of this when it was first released. Nut bustingly difficult to start with, which my 14 year old self loved. I beat it like 3 times and did all the post-game stuff.

One of the finest games ever created.

Had very high hopes when I saw previews of this game. Looked very gritty and dark, which is what I was looking for in an RPG at a time when Final Fantasy and some of the other high profile console RPG developers were taking their franchises into a more "vibrant" direction. Unfortunately, my built-up enthusiasm gradually plummeted during the course of my first run through the game as a result of its unpolished gameplay, and I never mustered up the necessary will to give it a second shot. Then Diablo II released a little bit later, and I never bothered to look back.

Just another ugly ass overrated PS1 game that's not playable in the modern era.
