Wow. Was anyone doing this before TinEye, or did Google just see that example, briefly wonder aloud, "I wonder if I can do that, too?" and devote 20% of its vast, juggernaut-like resources to the problem and find, "Yes, yes I can" while bankrupting and befouling the dreams of the startup which had inspired them?

Gazopa came out in 2008. I'm not sure if TinEye was before that. But Gazopa was a bit different in that it looked for similar images, not duplicates. I liked it better but it's been shut down for a bit now.

Can it be used to check whether a photo is shopped or not, by digging up originals? I dont if their algorithm would allow that, but it would be a pretty good use.

Don't think so. I just tried the current logo and it just gives me a bunch of blue shit, not nick frost. But I try mcd's avatar and it gives me a ton of pertinent results.
