Going without Cable
« on: June 29, 2011, 01:25:06 AM »
Have any of you guys tried this?  My only issue is cable run sports--hello NBA.  But I guess I could get the league pass thing.

HBO is another big one.  They take forever to release their season sets.  True Blood Season 3 just came out recently.  If I could pay HBO for 360 app like Netflix I would, but they're married to the cable companies.

Or you could pay me to access my HBO Go account.

League Pass is beyond awesome - about the only thing you miss is the half-time reports. Also: lockout.

Haven't had cable in years. I spend most of my free time on the computer/internet, where you can get just about any show/movie. For sports, I can find most things on TV (I get ABC, Fox, NBC, etc). Can't wait for football season

Yeah, I don't plan on having cable in my condo when I move in, nor a landline... just Internets.

I haven't had cable in a couple of years.  Netflix/Blockbuster and Hulu make it easy to go without.

If there was no league pass I'd have to go for cable. I cannot state how awesome it is, but the lack of half time/pre/post game stuff is really annoying sometimes. Thankfully they did stay on for the end of the NBA Finals.

One thing that always irked me was that League Pass doesn't carry the Draft :(

Xbox Live is getting "Live TV" in the next update... dunno if that requires a cable provider in the first place. Even then, there's plenty of options (Netflix, Hulu) to ditch Cable, for a cheaper price.

Seems so: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2015279371_brierethree10.html

Quote
Q: Will live TV be universal, or will it be regional TV services provided by whoever your cable provider is?

A: It will be tied to either a satellite broadcast company or a cable company. So in international markets, you'll just have one provider. In the U.S., it will be bifurcated by region, by market. You'll be a Comcast guy [in Seattle], for example.

Q: So you'll have to be a Comcast subscriber, similar to the way you need a subscription to get the ESPN content on the Xbox now?

A: Yes.

Useless feature.

You need Comcast's TV package in addition to their Internet? Or would just having "Comcast" internet be enough?

I would think you'd need Comcast's TV package.  The only added benefit of the Live TV service appears to be that you'd no longer have to rent a box from them (and you can search for programs by yelling at your Kinect sensor and waving your arms in the air) --assuming, of course, that your cable provider signs on for all of this in the first place.

Has anyone tried Hulu Plus?  Is it worth it?  I noticed that you can't watch older seasons of some shows, which seems like a mega fail.

I was also reading earlier on GAF on how cable boxes use more energy than fridges.  That's pretty crazy.

Between that and their lame ass movie selection, it pisses me off.  I don't care for it because there's not a lot of shows that I care to watch currently.  But if you have a lot of shows that are currently airing then it would be worth it.  My wife loves it.

How's the PS3 client?  My Gold sub ran out and I don't feel like renewing.  But read that the PS3 client stutters a lot.

My only issue is a lot of buffering.  But I don't know if I can blame it on the client because I get it a lot on my PS3 Netflix app so I think it might have to do with something between my PS3 and router.  My 360 Hulu+ app works great though.

We dropped cable more than 2 years ago. We do get basic cable since I have a cable modem, but we don't use it for anything.

I just use Sickbeard + SABNZBD for my TV watching. However I also don't follow any sports except for Formula 1 and I usually stream or download the BBC feed for that rather than deal with commercials in the US broadcasts.

My 3 year old was over at my parents house and she asked why my father changed the channel. He didn't, it was just a commercial. She didn't know what commercials were.

wait, so if I only have say Comcast internet, I can still plug my tv in and get the basic cable?  I'm having comcast internet (i know, motherfucking son of a bitch, no other choices in my area) installed this Saturday.

Depends on your provider. In my case yes, I still got basic cable even though I don't pay for it. I haven't even tried since the digital switchover so something might have changed. For whatever reason in order to give me cable internet they had to also broadcast their basic cable package. I have a small provider local to my region (grande communications). They haven't even rolled out Docsis 3 in my area :/

I've gone a month and a half without internet at the house.  Haven't had it since May 13th when we moved because I've been looking for a provider.  Fucking AT&T doesn't offer U-Verse in our area so all I can get from them is 768 kbps DSL (:lol :lol NO!).  Clear has no signal at my house.  And I fucking hate Comcast, but they own the Houston cable market.  There are no competitors.
