I don't like programming what I'm programming now because the application sucks and can't (won't) be fixed. But I still enjoy programming. I just spend more time than I should on sites like StackOverflow. But as said earlier, I still have hope that I'll find a team somewhere working on an app that is truly enjoyable. Until then... more time on SO.

Well that's the problem, outside of graphic designing at an ad company for a couple of years, and some freelancing, I got no experience. I'm not sure anymore if GD is a career I'd pursue any further, not in this environment.

This is what I've done in the past 9 years: 3 years at med school, 3 years in software engineering (effectively compsci program), and a 3 year break filled with the aforementioned work. As you might expect, the downward spiral and broken dreams hasn't been enjoyable at all, but I'm still trying to make something out of it.

Actually graphic design + some technical ability seems like a pretty good combination to me - I see a lot of job ads looking for front-end developers with design sense or vice versa. Can't you go in that direction?

not discouraging you from getting a degree as I do think that's valuable too (I'm actually into the more academic/theoretical side of CS myself)

I've been playing this field myself for a bit... minored in Art to go along with my CS background... so while I'm no Picasso, I've gotten a lot of praise for quickly sketching (and implementing) UIs. Did web development work back in the day and most recently contributed to the ground control UI for a forthcoming Navy UAV. I think doing the user interfaces is my favorite part of coding.

Well I'm learning how to draw now, because that's always been my handicap. Not to boast, but everyone I meet at some point tells me that I could be writing screenplays, and recently I was convinced by a couple of friends. I just started writing a script and one of the ways I kind of design levels and gameplay scenarios is always about trying to merge a sense of storytelling and gameplay, like they are playing one twos. The problem is, I never learned how to draw, I had a friend that draws amazing, actually works in 3D animation. Me though, I would ways go for the story, told through shitty sketches. I never quite believed that I could even use that skill, but if I learn how to draw (to an approachable level) and complement ideas and images that I have in my head then maybe who knows.

I think it's the more interesting road in videogames, because you know how the technical side works, and you have an ability to express yourself visually. Which is, or it will become, almost mandatory for someone in design.
