it's likely she was involved with the death because there aren't many other alternatives.
but at the same time there's no evidence to directly tie her to any wrong doings related to the death.

The Mississippi police, acting on a tip (that later was revealed to have come from a racist drug addict) were trying to serve a search warrant on the other half of the duplex in search of drugs. For whatever reason, they decided to kick in Maye's door (they had NO search warrant for his residence), where he was asleep in a recliner in the living room. Waking up to four armed men storming his house, he ran to his 18 month old daughter's room with a pistol, and when they came in there he fired three times before he realized they were cops, killing one who just happened to be the son of the local (white) police chief. Ahem.

Shockingly(yes being sarcastic here), a Mississippi jury convicted him of murder in the 1st and sentenced him to death. His representation was found to be inadequate during the sentencing phase of his trial, so his sentence was commuted to life in prison in 2006. In 2009, he was granted a new trial by the Mississippi state court of appeals and accepted a plea deal that found him guilty of manslaughter and sentenced him to 10 years in prison... time he'd already served.

IMO it's fucked up he even had to take the plea deal, but at least he's gonna be out of jail with his kids. It's kind of mind boggling that a black dude with no record, with the cops kicking in his door without a search warrant and trying to defend his daughter had to go through all this, but I guess it really doesn't pay to be black in Mississippi. This is also one of the only times you'll ever here me say something nice about libertopians, but Radley Balko did a really great thing bringing attention to this case and working to get Maye freed.

So yeah, annoying dumb white bitch gets to walk, and black dude only has to spend 10 years in jail and almost get executed for the police totally bungling the fuck out of a drug raid. America, fuck yeah, etc etc.
