I got to the lighthouse on my first play through and sort of fizzled out. Not sure why but I feel a little more receptive to the game this time around.

Actually playing it on a big screen tv and surround sound is helping to pull me in. I think playing it on my small TV in my room didn't really help in regards to making the story, characters and music engaging.

Awesome! The second FFXII replay thread in a month. Not enough

for this game, even in its unfinished state. Someday I'll get around to playing the International version

edit: read through your FFXII thread Borys. Lol'd so hard when Himu said he hadn't been using gambits for 50 hours then decided to use them and suddenly the game was good

I'm wondering if I should have just downloaded and played the International version (I own the physical game but its scratched to hell so I downloaded and patched a downloaded ISO to play via HDLoader). I'm about 3 hours in and may consider restarting just to get down with any benefits from the International version.

You can't change jobs after you've chosen a board? *sniffles* I made Vann a Knight thinking I could change it sometime down the line but I guess not. Also made Panelo a Black Mage. Hope I don't regret this decisions.

actualy scratch even "beatiful music and wonderful art design" because it's the usual "TRUMPET AND BROWN ON EVERYTHING" matsuno/sakimoto stuff

you know it's really funny when you think matsuno ended up working for level 5... where the heck he's going to put all that brown in a level 5 game,the guys who make heavy abuse of cellshading?

maybe they'll let him direct white knight chronicle 3

The International version actually has some fantastic changes. Certain spells are actually Area of Effect now, so enemy groups are easier to take down. Also the chance to get good loot from chests seems to have been changed in favor of getting the better loot. I've gotten more items from chests instead of shitty low gil treasures. That's pretty huge seeing as how the non-international version drops and loot system really pissed me off.

About the characters in general, its definitely a bit dry but I actually prefer this to wacky jappy XIII and obnoxious extreme archetypes in X.

The world in XII feels cohesive too, which is a big plus. I hate muddled art direction.

In original FF12 certain chests had specific drop rates. Drop rates for rare items are now considerably higher in FF12i.

Sorry Borys, just not my cup of tea. If you couldn't tell by my rankings, I prefer FF's the place an emphasis on user choice, customization, and exploration, FF13 does not provide this. It is anti-me.

If I ever play through a third time I think I'll really look at the party class composition. As it stands I like what I've got going except for Balthier (who I made a Machinist). Seems like a pretty worthless class considering how slow it is and the weakness of guns. The game should have allowed class changes but with a penalty (something like totally resetting the licenses of the former class). It sucks to be locked into a job you're not feeling hours down the line. Other than that though I've got my characters setup as...

Vann: Knight
Panelo: Black Mage
Balthier: Machinist
Fran: Red Mage
Basch: Uhlan
Ashe: Thinking about making her a Samurai

The only deficiency seems to be white magic which is why I'm still thinking about Ashe's class. Hmmm. Fran and Ashe have innate Cure but I'm sure near and at the end game I'll need a tier 2 or 3 curing spell.

Don't mean to condone this post, but the main art guys Matsuno usually works with didn't come with him to Level 5, they are still at SE afaik (working on FFXIV). I would imagine his games will have art by the regular Level 5 art staff and look like other Level 5 games.

This list changes every so often with me, but 5 and 4 are always at the top, and the online ones are always at the bottom.

Also, I just had a crazy experience in The Great Crystal. I wanted to get Excalibur so I tried to make a B-Line straight to it. I was reading off of two maps, ones layout was better to understand but the other had the correct treasure placement for the International version. So I finally reach the screen with Excalibur and come to find out the Ultima fight is NOT optional here (which, for some reason, it states in the International Map version). So I'm like "fuuuuuuck, I really want Excalibur" and decide to half ass this fight and see if I have a chance. Long story short, my Level 17 Balthier (everyone else is averaging around lv50, Penelo at 70) saved the day with Gil Toss. I had saved up around 200,000 Gil and set Balthier to spam Gil Toss at around 9999 to 10,000 damage per toss. I also mixed in some Mist attacks when my Techniques were sealed and couldn't use Gil Toss.

But even then Ultima goes all crazy with her big attack at the end. Just as I was about to be wiped with my final characters in play, I use Vann's Mist attack as a last ditch effort to finish off Ultima. I needed a 5 Combo at least with either Basch or Frann with Vann and got it.

That experience alone has placed this game very high in my opinion of it among other Final Fantasies. I don't remember having this intense a battle in a FF game and actually come out victorious.
