I have the original SDF in pirate form. I've always wanted to own it legally.

Has there been an HD release of Cowboy Bebop by any chance (not talking about the movie)? I'd be into this and it sounds like a good time to rewatch especially if it's in HD now.

Nope :(

I haven't seen RahXephon movie.

You know what? We should more of this. What show should we do after Bebop? Since it got a recent re-release, my vote is for Fooly Cooly.

I've rewatched FLCL some since the re-release, and I still second this as being next after Bebop.  That show is awesome, and means a fair bit to me.

Also, Haruko.  :drool

Fooly Cooly would be a good one to rewatch. I don't know...I'm really struggling to think of too many shows that are old enough to warrant a rewatch thread and have broad enough appeal that more than one or two people would even WANT to rewatch them.

I've got ADV's release from 2005-2006. I should've just picked up AnimEgo's version since I don't care for dubs.

I was planning on watching SDF Macross again anyway, but I think it's a good one to rewatch and discuss. It's extremely influential for many genres, and it's had a huge impact here in America thanks to Robotech.

And if some people can't take the "ancient" animation, screw 'em.

I tried to watch SDF a few years ago, but I just couldn't do it. The conditioning from watching Robotech several times as a kid was a hurdle that was just too high. :(

What about Otaku no Video? I'd love to see what a bunch of 00's anime fans think of 80's anime fans. And it's only $7.99!

Otaku no Video is great. It's starts simple enough, but by the end it's full-on Gainax craziness.

I really enjoy how in this thread we have a lot of non-anime fans in here. I'd like to go with something that non-anime fans could enjoy, so Otaku no Video or something like Genshiken or FLCL would be really neat.

Maybe one of the Gundam OVAs, like 08th MS Team or 0080: War in the Pocket.

We should do 0083.

1. Bask in the awesomeness of the mecha action.
2. Gasp at how shitty everything else is.

actually, I've been wanting to rewatch Trigun before I watch the movie.  People talk shit about it but it was one of my favorite anime back in the day.

I'd be down for Cowbow Bebop.  I watched it when I got that newer DVD set a while back though (the remix collection or whatever).

oh, and Rahxephon stinks.  Maybe it gets awesome in the later half, but I literally fell asleep watching the first half.  So so so boring.

scryed is another pick

Yeah, we might could do a Trigun rewatch sometime. Some parts of it haven't held up that well though, like some of the episodes have really glaring budget issues. Vash can be kind of grating too.

Yeah, a lot of them it does try to hard to be funny and often just becomes silly, which conflicts greatly with the super-dark tone in the second half.

I was thinking something cool and stylish, something to wow non-anime fans that is pretty similar to Bebop.

Anime similar to Cowboy Bebop:

- Samurai Champloo
- The Legend of Black Heaven
- Outlaw Star
- Big O
- Lupin the Third
- Gungrave
- Black Lagoon
- Darker than Black (on netflix)
- Wolf's Rain
- Crusher Joe
- Ergo Proxy
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
- Memories
- Galaxy Express 99
- 009-1
- Baccano!

WHAT?

Anyone else have the PS2 game? I'd love to hear anyone else's thoughts on it. Not bad for an anime-licensed title, and it has two new Seatbelts songs.

Bandai was localizing it, but I have no clue how far along they got in the process (ie. translated script, voice work, etc.) before it was canceled.

Pretty standard beat-em-up 3rd shooter. If it it didn't have the CB license, no one would care. I'm not sure where it takes place during the series run, but it does have a unique storyline.

Here are the two new songs:

A big part of the plot revolves around the song Diamonds.

bit late -- only finished the first episode just now

Ep1 -- Asteroid Blues

This is only the second time I've started watching CB, and I'm enjoying it more second time 'round. First time there was expectation and a certain greenness on my part regarding the show (and anime in general) and its venerable status that coloured my viewing experience. That, and like others, I didn't 'get' the show right away.

This time though, there was no such burdens, and the quality spoke for itself. A great opening episode.

"You're gonna carry that weight"

Its like the perfect line to end the series.

The music, obviously, was the biggest appeal but I don't think a scene, in any anime, hit me as hard as this track did with the accompanying chase scene...

"We'll never get outta here now. I'll never see Mars"

Maybe Ghost in the Shell but it doesn't top this

Stray Dog Strut

Episode title song:

Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut

This isn't one of the better episodes, in my opinion, but it makes up for it by introducing us to a wider look at the Bebop universe with some well incorporated comedy thrown in.

I always enjoyed how in Bebop, it takes place in the future but every thing remains familiar, like humanity won't make HUGE gigantic strides in terms of culture compared to where we are today, with the exception that people now have the ability to travel through space.

The positioning of Mars is a great example:

Although Asteroid Blues shows some locales, it doesn't really show off the city life too well.

The city on Mars doesn't look too far off from our own:

You can kinda tell this is the Chinatown portion of this city.

Though this episode isn't one of the best and I'd throw it on the weaker side of things, it still has a lot to like.

The bounty for this episode for instance. He goes from this:

to this:

This is just hilarious for too many reasons to list.

Then there's Ein and the chase. The whole thing is full of character despite the utterly ridiculous set up.

Favorite quotes in this episode

"We have no choice - we have to use...the dog whistle."

"You know what that could mean? It's very risky!"

"I don't care!"

"We'll draw attention!"

"It's our only option."

"We're ready to go!"

"Then do it."

"Is it on? I can't hear it."

"It's too high-pitched, only animals can pick it up?"

"I know, I was just testing it."

---------------

"We are in very deep shit, my friend" "Seems that way"

--------------

"I'll pay you back when I'm rich!"

Robotech
The Big O
Outlaw Star
Stand Alone Complex

I'd say those are the four we'll most likely do for next time and, frankly, I'm not really that picky, I could watch either of them.

Anyway, Cowboy Bebop episode 2:

It's an okay episode and has some pretty funny moments in it, but Mushroom Samba does pretty much the same thing only way better. Next episode though...:bow Faye :bow2

I divorced from anime long ago, so as a non-fan I can say if you want to rope people in Lupin the 3rd is a good choice.  It has an excellent Miyazaki movie available on Netflix streaming and the tv series itself is fun and not off putingly wacky jappy as most other stuff.  It also provides a nice parallel with Bebop with similar character archetypes but replacing "bounty hunting" with "professional robbery".

Ep 2 -- Stray Dog Strut

Never saw Game of Death so I never got the references to it in this episode (apart from the obvious Bruce Lee ones), but reading up on the film it's hilarious how overt it is, especially the character of Hakim. Spike even telegraphs it when he mentions the nunchuks from Way of the Dragon. Also, the whole thing mostly being set in Chinatown. They weren't joking when they said Spike is a mixture of Lupin III and Bruce Lee.

Probably my favourite shot in the episode [a dragon mural, I wonder who its paying homage to]:
