Somehow Germany manages to rule Europe economically despite all this laziness....wish the Japanese would look into that...

Japanese holidays aren't bad at all really - I get 20 days vacation plus all the national holidays. But it could always be better! *stares at Gundam*

A lot of my Econ books always mention how efficient the German work model is. They're Apperently the most productive per hour than any other nation in the world while working less hours and having more holidays.

I'd like to visit. But since I'm American with likely only 5 day vaycay the only thing I'd be able to do is do generic tourist crap.

But America is so diverse I don't see much of a reason to live anywhere else. I can get a European like lifestyle by living on the east coast.

I have never gotten a paid vacation in my life. Closest thing to it was the only time I ever left the country, but there was quite a bit of labor involved in that trip.

Also the only time I've ever been on a yacht in my life too. A 70-foot Striker From New Orleans to Saint Martin and back.

Some friends of mine went down there on a booze cruise and ended up leaving a guy down there, given his not having a passport (and his very-long criminal record) somebody had to go back and get him. So two days after they get back, "Hey Thor, you willing to drive my boat from Nawlya to Saint Martin and back? I'll give ya three grand and pay expenses!"

So I get down there and this motherfucker ain't quit drinking since he got down there. I had to basically carry this dude a long ass way back to the boat. I did find the humidor on the boat which had 30 really fat blunts that had an eighth (3.5 grams each if you're keeping track boogie) in 'em apiece, and I smoked every last one of them on the way back to New Orleans. I get 25 days off. I can't get any more until I work at the company for 7 years and then it becomes 30 days and so on until the max at 50 days off.

The company I'm contracting with gives their employees 20 PTO days per year, but due to company culture no-one uses more than 4 or 5 unless they're sick. The rest of the PTO just disappears. Repeatedly and regularly.

Are you guys for real? The fact USA has immigrants from all over the world doesn't make it as diverse as Europe (we got immigrants from all over the world too). I think you guys are forgetting that there are like 50 countries in Europe, some of which have been around since the fall of the Roman Empire and have over a thousand year of history.

When you travel 100 kilometres in Europe you can be in a completely different world, where nothing is the same. Not the same language, different kind of housing, different foods, different look of people with a different history. You won't even find the same shops and brands.

Not trying to be demeaning, cause I'd love to come to the USA but you can't compare that with just having some immigrants around.

In landscapes Europe is about as diverse as it can get on such a small land mass too. Not to mention architecture and cities diversity.

I'm not implying that USA doesn't have culture or isn't highly influential. I mean it's one of the most influential countries.

But it's more of a single entity, in which it strengths lies as well. Of course there is diversity if you zoom in, but it isn't as in your face and obvious as in Europe. It's much more subtle.

Anyway I'm really looking to travelling around the US at some point to get to know your country better, as it fascinates me and I feel I have to spend a longer period of time there, to really get it.

The landscapes are vastly more diverse in the US. We have everything from the tropical Hawaii to the frozen tundra known as Alaska. Hell, even the forests are very different.

Well US is a bit bigger, but Europe has volcano moonscapes in Iceland, fjords and tundras in Scandinavia and Russia. High mountains and ancient forests and everything else you can come up with.

And if you're counting Hawaii, I guess Europe has tropical places too in it's offshore islands in the Carribean and elsewhere

No, there's no law forcing them to pay out unpaid PTO; they either use it or lose it, even if they quit. The only time I ever see consecutive vacation days used is the month prior to someone quitting. Then they take off their remaining time, and then show up on the last day to fill out departure paperwork.

The PTO rolls over for the next year only, so there are only ever 20x2 days maximum on reserve for any given employee. At the end of the 2nd year, the first year's remaining time is permanently erased.
