Great politicians through history
« on: August 05, 2011, 11:25:03 PM »
Since the Obama has fizzled let's name some great politicians\rulers through history.

Paul Keating

Prime Minister 1991-1996
Treasurer 1983-1991

Key Points
-Never went to uni/college but is still regarded as one of Australia's smartest prime ministers
-Started APEC
-Floated the AU$
-Was 'New Labor' before Tony Blair trademarked it(good and bad things this one)
-Had awesome insults:
Quote
"What we have got is a dead carcass, swinging in the breeze, but nobody will cut it down to replace him."
"He's wound up like a thousand day clock..."
"The thing about poor old Costello is he is all tip and no iceberg. He can throw a punch across the parliament but the bloke he should be throwing a punch to is Howard, but of course he doesn't have the ticker for it."
"Now listen mate," [to John Browne, Minister of Sport, who was proposing a 110 per cent tax deduction for contributions to a Sports Foundation] "you're not getting 110 per cent. You can forget it. This is a fucking Boulevard Hotel special, this is. The trouble is we are dealing with a sports junkie here [gesturing towards Bob Hawke]. I go out for a piss and they pull this one on me. Well that's the last time I leave you two alone. From now on, I'm sticking to you two like shit to a blanket."
"You boxhead you wouldn't know. You are flat out counting past ten."
(His performance) is like being flogged with a warm lettuce.
"I suppose tha the Honourable Gentleman's hair, like his intellect, will recede into th darkness."
"We're not interested in the views of painted, perfumed gigolos."

Whitlam: "That was a good speech. You should go back comrade, and get yourself an honours degree."
Keating: "What for ?  Then I'd be like you."

"I like the Queen... and I think she liked me"
"The Honorable Member has been in so many parties he is a complete political harlot."
"That you Jim? Paul Keating here. Just because you swallowed a f***ing dictionary when you were about 15 doesn't give you the right to pour a bucket of shit over the rest of us."
"Codd will be lucky to get a job cleaning shithouses if I ever become Prime Minister."

Tommy Douglas

-He is largely responsible for Canadian central banking, old age pensions, unemployment insurance, and our universal Medicare.

-When asked why he stayed with NDP when he could have done better with a more powerful party, Douglas simply replied, " I have watched politicians for the last forty years drop their principles in order to get power only to find that those who paid and controlled the party which they joined prevented them from all the things they really believed in."

Keating was a monster, he's a bit senile now (e.g. calling pedestrians cyclists) but he's an autodidact and always listened to smart people in policy when in government.

An autodidact!  La-di-da!  I'm sure he's a regular Srinivasa Ramanujan, that one.

Seriously, he sounds like a lame PM.  Who else you got?

You main complaint against Hon. Keating seems to be that he was an asshole. Sometimes you need an asshole to get shit done!
