What games did I miss on PSP?
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:03:20 AM »
The Korean place literally insisted on flashing a PSP for me. Now where do I get games and what should I get?

- one game i recomends to everybody is half minute hero, basicaly the world is going to ends in 30 second and you have to grind and beat up the villains in those 30 seconds, there is a lot of humor (the game makes a "BUT THOU MUST" question and if you reply no goes all like "when was the last time you were able to continue by answering no?") the game is full of shitload secrets and it's one of the most original game on the console,it's also on XBLA if you own a 360

- prinny can i be the hero is a nice ghost & goblins sidescroller, being a nippon ichi game it's also really wacky jappy, there is a sequel but they turned the difficulty dial to "bullshit" level so i would stick to the original

- patapon is a strategy game but the catch is that you give orders by beating drums at rhythm,it's another pretty original game, there are 2 sequels but i haven't played the third and the second was really similiar to the first one

- metal gear portable ops is a nice metal gear game,it features RPG element and you get to kidnap people by attaching them to hot air balloons,i guess there is not a lot to add other than they babble a lot without any reas... no wait that's to be expected in a metal gear game

- this is a guilty pleasure of mine and it's called dungeon maker,it's like a shitty version of diablo but the catch is that you buy the piece of dungeons and then assemble them, different pieces attract different monster so if you want to fight skeletons you need to build a graveyard, and then those skeleton comes equipped with swords and shield which you can sell to buy a japanese dojo which attract samurai's which you murder to get katana's and etc etc

- megaman powered up is a remake of the original game,it features cute 3D graphics,a level editor, new levels, musical remix and 2 new robot masters to bring the number of original robot masters to 8 like the other megaman games, there is also a megaman x remake but it's not as good as megaman powered up if you ask me

- there are a lot of sting games if you haven't played them already on GBA/DS,personaly i always recomend riviera as the other are SRPG mainly designed to annoy the player to death

- jeanne d'arc is a SRPG made by level 5 based on animu jeanne d'arc, the setting makes it more unique compared to other SRPG but other than that it's pretty bland... still i guess it's an okay game

- a lot of people likes wild arms XF,it's a SRPG with a job system that tries to be more complicated than your usual "warrior/mage/thief" deal but personaly i didn't like it,if you like SRPG you might still give it a try

- if you dig SRPG,there is also a port of final fantasy tactics with a rewriten script and a souped-up port of tactics ogre:let us cling together if you are one of those himuro guys that get all wet as soon as they see a messenger bringing GRAVE NEWS

- metal gear ac!d get usualy lambasted for being a card game but actualy it's more similiar to a stealth version of x-com,the idea is that you don't have commands but instead you have card so if you want to shoot you need to draw the SOCOM card and if you want to heal you need to draw the ration card,it's not that bad as you can just load the deck with whatever you need,it's a novel idea but i don't think that stealth and turn based gameplay mix that well

- there is an interessing port of princess crown, the first vanillaware game ever which was released as a saturn only japanese release,it's really reminishing of CPS-2 game with big colorfull sprite and fighting animation only it's actualy a full rpg, playing it in japanese is really annoying but there is a guide on gamefaqs to help you stumble through it

- if you haven't played them there are a lot of NIS SRPG port, basicaly almost every PS2 SRPG that NIS released is also on PSP

- there is a remake of the first two star ocean games if you dig that

- also collection of several konami shooters including gradius, parodius, and twinbee

- if you like card games there are several yu-gi-oh games, the last one is 5 and features every card released except the last 3 sets which the next one is going to have

- hammerin hero is a nice 2D sidescrollers albeit a short one

- there is class of heroes if you dig dungeon crawler a-la wizardry but i wouldn't suggest it

- dissidia final fantasy is a fighting game featuring every hero and villain from final fantasy,it's an okay game but you play it more for hearing stuff like battle on the big bridge and FF7 boss theme than the actual game, you should pick the sequel if you want to play it though

- there is a port/remake of the original persona but i think it's a pretty awful game, the much better persona 2 is going to hit this fall though

- there is also a remake of lunar but i haven't played it so i can't really say

- Z.H.P is a roguelike made by NIS,it's choke full of joke and it has awesome music but for roguelike standard it's too easy, cladun is a similiar concept but it's more of an action game and feature less loot

- patchwork heroes plays kinda like qix if it had very unique visuals, you might want to give it a try if you like your game just for the unique factor

- kingdom hearts birth by sleep is the big one and probably one of the best PSP game,a huge improvement over all the shitty DS releases

- there is ys oath in felgana which is a nice action rpg, there is also ys 7 but i don't like 7

- there is a remake of castlevania rondo of blood that comes with horrible 3D models, instead of awesome 2D sprites, though luckily the original is an unlockable and you can also unlock symphony of the night

- monster hunter is awesome but you have to play it with other people,i always suggest people to play monster hunter 3 on the wii,on a big screen, with online play, but nobody ever hears me out :'(

- if all comes to worst there is a very good playstation emulator inside it,nothing more awesome than playing brave fencer musashi on the go

^ not a single western game... pathetic

Aside from the God of War games, and of course the Wipeout series, were there even western games worth playing on PSP? Serious question, it seems that western 3rd parties ignored the system...

Magus list is :bow but also, Every Extend Extra is one I'll recommend. It's a pseudo-shmup where you blow yourself up to make chains... very addicting risk/reward gameplay, awesome visuals courtesy of Mizuguchi, and a techno soundtrack before techno got all minimal and boring. Also, how could he forget Trails in the Sky? Awesome oldskool RPG that recalls the 32 bit classics.

Dead Head Fred is a pretty fun action/adventure where you play as a zombie. And if you are into co-op loot whoring games then you can't go wrong with Phantasy Star Portable 2 (the art style is anime as fuck though).

And I second Crush. Extremely fun and unique puzzle game.

to add to the western games already:

- SSX On Tour (better than the PS2/Xbox version; more like SSX3)
- Motorstorm Arctic Edge
- Rock Band Unplugged  (Frequency / Amplitude-lite mixed with Rock Band aesthetics)
- Pursuit Force 1 / 2 (like the Spyhunter PS2 games)
- Midnight Club 3 / LA Remix  (first is a port of the PS2/Xbox game; second is a new game)
- LittleBigPlanet  (if you don't dislike LBP)

and some specificity on the games demi listed:

- Burnout Legend is a 'best of' Burnout game comprised of elements from Burnout 1-3, with the gameplay of Burnout 3.  Burnout Dominator is a new game released for PSP/PS2, but I haven't played it so I can't tell you more.

- GTA Liberty City and Vice City Stories are similar to the PS2 game set in the GTA3 and Vice City cities.  GTA Chinatown Wars is a top down GTA game; also on iphone and DS.

- Resistance Retribution and the two Syphon Filter game are third person shooters where you use the face buttons as the right analog stick.  I enjoy them but playing a portable shooter with gimped controls can be off-putting.

and back to the Japagames:

- Hot Shots Golf
- Hot Shots Tennis
- Gladiator Begins
- Tenchu Shadow Assassins
- Ridge Racer 1 / 2
- Virtua Tennis
- Gurumin
- What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord? (game name is changed and confusing)
- Patchwork Heroes
- THEXDER NEO
- Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins
- Ape Escape
- Space Invaders Extreme

There are also some ports of PS2 games worth checking out like Shadow of Destiny, X-Men Legends 2, Gitaroo Man, and things like that.

Chili Con Carnage is another western game that's pretty fun

Things I DL'ed:

Monster Hunter- This is like a shitty F2P MMO you play by yourself. Bleh.
Half Minute Hero- Amazing, so fun.
Patapon- OMG fun.

I bought a PSP mainly for wacky jappy action time, so keep 'em coming. Persona 3 is next

Patapon is definitely fun, and while I haven't tried any of the sequels, people who did suggested skipping the first and playing the second instead, because it's basically an updated/improved version of the same game with fleshed out mechanics. Kinda renders the original pointless.

I'm probably younger than you! and I don't have real nostalgic attachment! I liked it at first because it reminded me of Z Gundam for the NES, and later I realized that is a Thexder clone.  But I've never played the original.

Patapon is garbage, avoid.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 is probably the best game for PSP.

SNK Arcade Classics is a VERY good collection also. It features Burning Fight, which is the best sidescrolling BEU ever made.

I'm lacking on my PSP... last I played was Persona 2 but now that it's coming to America, not sure if I should stop and wait for that, or just continue with my current game.

It's just hard to play the vidya when you can afford it.

whoa, i'm missing something with this game because it seemed very repetitive and linear.

each level has 2 achievement, try to hunt for them,a lot of them are hidden and give cool reward and it makes the game much more better than simply going for the straight boss kill, for example

spoiler (click to show/hide)
in one level the boss has hide all the mook so you can't level up but there is an hermit which will train you,you can just train normaly and then beat the boss but if you level grind, the hermit challenge you to a fight and he's VERY strong,if you beat him you get an achievement and extra equipment
[close]

some level's also branch, for example the first level that branch
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the boss burn a forest after the first 15 second,if you save the forest by killing the boss before he burns it you go to stage A,but if you let the forest burn, the hero discover a hidden path and you go to stage B
[close]

If your flashed PSP allows you to overclock your CPU, the GTA LC/VC Stories games are really good. Without the overclock, the framerate makes it a bit iffy, to be honest.

You can, but as far as I know it's not necessary to complete to the main quest. It works just like FFT, click on a far away point on the map and you'll trigger a random encounter during one of your steps eventually. If you want to trigger a battle in a specific location, just go back and forth between it and an adjacent point. Bear in mind that towns (ones w/shops) won't trigger battles.

Aha. I only have like 6 or 7 locations open and 2 of them are shops, so maybe that's why I wasn't seeing them. I kind of hate micro-managing spells and equipment, but it's part of the Tactics Ogre charm
