What can I say? It's been a long time coming! Just today news from the VALVe office has emerged as our own Craig "Torbull" Levine has taken the trip down to supposedly "help develop" the new version of Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike:Global Offensive (CS:GO). Is this VALVe reaching out to the community, recognizing the competitive community?

Quote
News first arrived about the new version on the ESEA.net Facebook Page, saying:

"Counter Strike: Global Operation... More info tomorrow!"

Jess Cliffe, one of the original creators of Counter-Strike, was seen posting on the SteamPowered forums, saying "Global Offensive."

Rumors:
Planned to be released Q1 2012
Focuses on 5v5 competition
Press release within 24 hours from VALVe
Plays on an updated source engine
Individual & Team rankings
New Guns added
New Grenades
Dust & Aztec major revamp
Spamming still viable
Ammo is free

We can only hope and wait in anticipation as more details are revealed and are made public. As always, keep it tuned to ESEANews.com and the ESEA.net Facebook Page for more info!

With the rise of COD, I'm really surprised valve didn't try to keep CS as viable. CS is the king of online FPS yet hasn't had any major changes in years. I don't know if valve was just resting on their laurels or what. I'm glad to see they haven't forgot about it.

What is dissapointing is that they dont seem to be making a NEW CS. This just seems like a update where we still be running on dust an aztec, argueably the best maps in the world, but ive spent years on them.

Valve has officially announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The game is targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam in early 2012 and will expand upon the team-based action gameplay which was launched exactly 12 years ago.

Global Offensive features new maps, characters, and weapons with updated versions of the classic CS content in addition to new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

“Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999,” said Doug Lombard, VP of marketing at Valve.

“For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment.

The games was rumored earlier today thanks to comments from play testers and eSports figures via an ESEA forums post.

The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year’s PAX Prime and London Games Festival.

Visit the game’s Steam page here.

Not really, they'll just keep playing the original version that came out 12 years ago like they're still doing right now.

I read some impressions of it (sorry, I lost the link).  basically, it's not Counter-Strike 2.  It's a further updated, tweaked and refined version of Counter-Strike, even more so than CS Source.  There are some changes, but the core game is mostly the same.

Graphics are supposed to be significantly improved.  Weapons are rebalanced; assault rifles seem untouched, but SMGs are nerfed to be mid-range and shotguns to be close range.  New weapons like a heavy machine gun and molitov (creates aoe fire damage to block paths).  Same maps and names (de_, etc.)

No iron sights/ADS, regenerating health, or things like that.  Personally, I like ADS in console shooters because it helps mitigate my poor, poor analog stick aiming.

I assume there will be a lot of customization to fit Valve's hat agenda.  Nothing to really back up that thought.

Counter Strike: Offend PC Gamers

yeah, they already did that with CS Source.  1.6 is the real counter-strike.  or something like that.

- this game is not going to replace CS 1.6, or CS:S, it is primary made for consoles, PC version is just kind of a "bonus"
- at the moment, the game looks more like HL2DM
- There is no recoil and there will never be. (because of the consoles)
- the game runs on L4D2 engine
- SourceTV is NOT a priority
- they are working on match making system
- new money system
- no kevlar (this should be fixed in the future)
- maps are simplyfied for XBOX style, less ways, most fights are close range
- Hidden Path (Valve only finances the game) is trying to make all weapons balanced.

Another game dumbed down by consoles.  :'(

I don't get the recoil thing.

Console games have recoil and multiplatform games have recoil on the PC even if the console versions don't...

I think you're mistaking recoil with bullet spread

I'll demo it on  XBLA since its going to be cheap but honestly I was never much of a counter strike fan on any platform. But that's just a personal taste thing. I'll give anything a shot though although I think source games feel awful on consoles and it feels like you are sliding around across the map rather than actually moving.

That's fair but they would have to be incredibly dumb to essentially make the same mistake again. The shooter market is so huge on consoles that they'd be crazy not to do a better job there although it being a XBLA/PSN only release would limit it a bit. That being said 1943 did mega numbers on consoles so it can be done.

It isn't the next CS by any stretch of the imagination. It's a console game that they've decided to do on the PC as well.

All I'm saying is don't get your hopes up for some amazing new game. Its what cs on the original xbox was for cz.

it is not even the next CS, what?

Valve needs to incorporate a system which puts you in leagues with other players based on your skill and recommends servers based on that. At least then people who aren't super hardcore can, maybe, find people of their own skill to play with. Would be nice. An official Gun Game mode would be cool.

OR how about Valve just make a Surf game and forget this CS stuff?

That was one of the major reasons I couldn't get in to CS. Luckily they're fixing it with this one, and I'll be getting it on day one.

they're redesigning it for CS:GO.  that tunnel is now wider, has more cover, and includes a new exit to escape from the right.

I'm still confused by what this is.  On consoles it is an XBLA/PSN game, but is it free to play on PC?

I pretty much only played CS from 1999 to 2004, then i got back into console gaming. I was super hardcore at this game; I remember clearing entire teams by myself quite a few times, and I had tons of screenshots of scoreboards that I would post on gaf back in the days showing insane scores (like 34-2).

After years of halo, cod, and some pc tf2 on the side; I decided to return to CS and uhhh.. It was a rather brutal return. It's like the scene is obsessed with Office and Dust2; and the other servers are running gungames or those annoying custom maps using warcraft3 mods...

But.. The Biggest shock was how weapons were handled. Either they changed the way the bullet spread and recoils worked; but the guns felt like they were brokens. 'Back in the days' you could hit stuff by standing up, now it was always about crouching and firing single shots if you wanted a chance at hitting other guys from any kind of decent distance. De_dust used to have some pretty vicious firefights in the tunnels with lots of hit and runs happening, but the bullets were spreading out so much now, it was completely useless.. People would just jump in the action, crouch and shoot.

It's like the game went full distinguished mentally-challenged fellow with the bullet spread algos and it broke the game. It made me feel like my character had never handled a weapon in his life before and would lose control of his weapon everytime he shot.
