Let's talk about 60's films
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:10:17 PM »
Finished my Mad Men rewatch and I'm on a total 60's kick. I've seen most of the notables of the 60's so I'm asking for some suggestions. I watched The Graduate, which I think is overrated but still really good, and I recently watched Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. They've got Hard Day's Night on here too, which is neat. I really like the 60's aesthetic and I want more.

I was going to have a Bond marathon tonight, actually. The other day I saw  they had a whole bunch of Bond films on instant stream and now they've disappeared. wtf

Foreign film suggestions are nice too though chances are I"ve seen a bulk of the notable ones.

I've seen La Dolce Vita and Nights of Cabria. Eclipse isn't on netflix.

Their foreign film selection for 60's films, particularly french new wave, is amazing. I probably watched dozens and dozens of their 60's foreign film selection last year.

It's hardly awful. If we're talking about overrated 60's films I can't help but mention Lawrence of Arabia.

since the Criterion films are disappearing slowly, there's less now then there was say, 8 months ago.  Still lotsa good nichy kind of flicks out there.

Hey, how about some Japanese noir/Samurai drama?

Blackmail is my Life is a breezy and fun little caper flick about a gang of extortioners that try to move up the criminal ladder.  I've got Tattooed Life and Kanto Wanderer on my queue, which I haven't seen yet, but they're both samurai flicks from the fukawesome Seijun Suzuki, so I feel safe recommending them.

Man, fuck it. Let's just talk about 60's films in general

Thanks for the suggestions. Those sound tempting!

Dr. Strangelove?

What about Hitchcock? Psycho, The Birds, North by Northwest is 1959 which is close enough.

Anatomy of a Murder is also 1959 I think but is a great trial film.

Don't know how much these fit into what you want.

There's the spaghetti westerns like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

A Shot In The Dark is my favorite of the Pink Panther series by far and one of my favorite comedies, the original is good too. Both early 60s.

Speaking of Sellers and James Bond, there's Casino Royale:lol

Continuing with Sellers, The Party is late 60s and basically him improvising for an hour and a half.

And Manos, of course.

klute for some reason reminded me of "bring me the head of alfredo garcia" thinking it came out the same year. it was actually 74 but still, everyone needs to watch that film regardless.
