I think one of the pack-ins in Euroland is a CC Pro, so I think that's encouraged.

damn, didn't know it was dual layer

you can still play isos of those right?

apologies if you weren't referencing piracy somehow...

I'm playing with wiimote, and it plays great. Except Camera control. You have to hold C, then use the D-Pad to turn the camera.

The british voices don't fit at all, so far. It's very Harry Potter. lol

It's dual language, isn't it? you fancy brits over japanese?

I'm gonna import it maybe early september unless NoA decides to pity Wii owners.  If I order it now, it won't be here until next week, and I'll be playing Deus Ex then.  Plus it's supposed to be ~80 hours long.  That's why I can't justify pirating it either.  However much Euro it costs is nothing compared to 80 hours of time.

Yeah, I've played like 2 hours or so so far and my main complaint is that I have tons of quests but no idea where the fuck to go to get the stuff to finish them. Oh well, I just run around and kill shit, every once and a while I finish a quest.

Game's fun as hell though, good shit.

Yea, you dont have to "return" anything unless you have to (the broken watch) - the quest ends, you get your XP, move on

So it's worth doing these quests in the long run even if you don't care to do them

The customization of characters is severely lacking, unfortunately. Each character has 3 "paths" and you can select each one at any time, each giving their own benefits. But each path has like, 6 "additions" you have to grind out to upgrade.

Characters have plenty of Arts to use in battle, though.

Officially addicted to this game. I'm still not very far since I keep getting distracted with sidequests/grinding, but the battle system is awesome. Lots of skills, fast paced, like a better FFXII. Voices during battle are starting to get on my nerves, but hey, that's pretty much any JRPG. Wii purchase vindicated.

I came back for this thread.  I approve of all Xenoblade love since it's the best goddamn rpg in a long time.

Re: quests, the trick is to grab all you can see and then do them as you adventure.  There are different npcs/monsters at day/night, so one of the more annoying parts of the game if you are ocd about doing all quests is you gotta keep sweeping the entire towns twice when looking for quests.  Best not to get ocd about that.  Also as your stars go up and as you progress in the game, new quests open up at the older cities/settlements.

THERE IS A POINT OF NO RETURN FOR DOING SIDEQUESTS.  Basically when you're like oh shit I think I just passed the halfway point (~30-50 hours in), you should probably finish up all your quests.  The point of no return is actually a few areas beyond the halfway point, but it's better to clear all the earlier stuff by then and then do the new stuff.

Also try to avoid spoilers, the story is actually pretty good!

The only thing you can't do 100% in one run is maxing your friend relationships with all party members because it takes forever!

Also EVERYTHING carries over in new game+  It's like Disgaea, you start the game exactly the same as you were at the end of the game.  Same levels, equip, party member relationship stars, skills; although one REALLY SUCKY thing is the town stars reset to zero because I guess they need to in order for the quests to work right. So you have to do ALL THE 400 SIDEQUESTS AGAIN if you want a 100% on your 2nd run.

So the best way to play it is to just not give a fuck and do whatever you want and enjoy the adventure.  If you're a 100% rpg nut, you either go all out and do everything 1st run besides maxing party member stars, or you do nothing 1st run and then everything second run.

well i'm back, sooooo where do i start, let's start a bit with the plot basicaly two giant mecha who totaly looks like reshiram and zekrom duke it out in some time space infinity and end up both dead which generates the modern world, one giant robot end up spawning humanity and the other a bunch of robots,so of course this generates the usual "WAR AGAINST THE MACHINES!" and one guy ends up with some magical anti-robo blade called the monado which turns the tide of the war, alas you play a much less cooler guy who instead want to discover the secret powers of the blade since "YOU MIGHT NEVER KNOW WHEN THOSE ROBOT WILL BE BACK!!1!" well so far it just kinda sounds non-sensicaly but i barely scratched the first hour i guess so there is a lot of time for it to get better,so let's go to the actual game....

the battle system is in real time, you control 1 party members while the other 2 are cpu controlled,as far as i know there is no way at all to give orders to your other party members, and dayum! i really hope i am wrong and that i missed the option because i might explode out of sheer irony after all the comments i have read about youknowwhatgameimtalkingabout... no gambit to set here at all for all you borys and himuro's,the character all auto-attack when they are close to the target every 3-4 seconds, there are no MP,instead below you have a list of skills which you can use, each skill comes with a cool-down time but other than that you can spam them all you want

there is a tanking system where enemies will attack the one that deal the most damage, some skills deal more damage or have extra effects when attacking the enemy from behind or the sides so usualy one character draws attention by punching the monster while the other sneaks behind the monster behind and backstab the shit out of him, there seems also that there are no consumable to use at all so your only option to heal is shulk (SMASH) heal skill which heals very crappy amount of damage, your character also heal to full health at the end of each encounter (must not mention people bitching about this in FF13,must not mention people bitching about this in FF13)

character seems all to fit a certain strategy... shulk is the all-rounder and healer, his friend is the dumbass tank (a lot of his skills just draws the enemy attention) and the annoying chick who follows them around is the damage dealer (though this is offsected by the fact that she has really crappy defense so if she draws attention by dealing too much damage she risk ending up dead)

the game seems to reward you for a lot of stuff, more often than not you find random items on the ground like insects and flowers and you can put these in a collectbook and clearing collections give you loot, each time you find a new location the game declares "YOU FOUND A NEW LANDMARK!" and then proceeds to give you XP and skill points for it,i actualy ended up leveling up once for simply going to the plaza part of the town! game has achievement too which too nets you extra XP and skill points and good lord there is an achievement for everything,i got an achievement for opening my first chest with rare loot, one for killing too many bugs enemies, one for talking to my first npc,i even got an achievement when i ended up dead once!

towns have a lot of sidequests, like the character never, ever stop giving you sidequests,i got 15 like all at once but these are all the WoW variety of "KILL 3 WOOD RABBITS!" "KILL 2 SHELL CRABS!" "I WANT 3 BAT WINGS!" it's like everybody holds a grudge against small animals, most of these quest just reward you only money and XP and will solve automaticaly once you end up murdering whatever you need or gather enough loot which will probably happen naturaly by just murdering everything you find on the road but some are given you to named NPC and as such you need to go back to the original quest giver which is really stupid! i forgot where one named NPC was and i ended up going around the town like a moron for quite a while

while speaking about town, they are pretty big but also empty and boring to explore,i think the developer realized this too because you can actualy instantly warp to any landmark you have found by opening the map

named NPC are specials, first they follow a schedule so you can only find them during certain hours of the day (the game has a day and night system though there is an option to skip to any time you want whenever you want therefore eliminating the need of standing around like a dumbass waiting for the clock to move his ass like it usualy happens with system like that) and second you can trade the aforementioned insect and flowers to them for actual items, most of them holds junk but some holds rare item or piece of loot that someone might want for a quest therefore saving you some murdering time, apparently solving their quest opens up more item for trade but i haven't noticed it so far

some point of the town have HEART-TO-HEART points which basicaly are star ocean private event with a fancy name, the only difference is that some of them won't trigger unless the character aren't buddy buddy enough with each other

character customization? each character get 2 kind of points arts point and skill points, arts point can be consumed to improve battle skills so that you get stuff like more damage and smaller cool-down times, skill points are spent on a tree which only has 3 ramification which gives bonus to the character, each tree is different for each character so for example shulk gets a tree that can improve his healing while his tanking friend get a tree that improves his tanking abilities

each character gets to equip a weapon, and 4 piece of armor, some weapons and armor comes with gem slot which let you equip gem in them, these gem in turn gives the character stuff like more strenght, poison resistance and the like,it's kinda reminiscing of diablo though unlike diablo you can remove the gem from the weapon anytime you want without any problem,it's a nice addition but so far they don't have such big effect that i can see them making a difference, changing equipment also change your character appearance which is cool but some piece of equipment looks the same only with different color... that's really stupid, and there a lot of pieces that you just barely notice,it just doesn't have the same graphic impact of equipping a dragon quest 9 character with all his job related equipment

mmm... what else, game is very loot happy,in the first 5 minute i killed a rabbit and he ended up dropping an awesome cannon for shulk tanking friend :lol

the music is made by mitsuda and shimomura a fact which should be way more important than "it has sidequests" but i guess i'm the only one who understands something like this :'(

also i can't help but think that some of the character just looks wierd, their eyes and nose just looks huge especialy the girl, though i don't know maybe here i'm just nitpicking

oh there are big unique named monster which drops special loot upon defeat so i guess this will at least make happy the borys and the himuro's and sure you can wander and wonder like a hobo if you want but there is not a lot of reason to do so unless you really want to murder more kinds of rabbit and insects

you can also save anywhere on the map which i guess it's a pretty handy feature as long as you don't forget to save because you never see any save point like i tend to do :fbm

the menu are also a total pain to traverse as it keeps loading and loading each time you open one... maybe it runs better when it's on an hard disk?

tl;dr version, game is not bad but i thought between the slow start of the plot and the fact that i spent 30 minutes taking random murder requests from shoddy npc the first few hours were kinda boring

also goddamn i was totaly right on the money when i said that the review are slobbering all over it only because it plays like one of those lame korean MMORPG

too late, i already said it's good and made my boypussy leak. you lose

I was just gonna post how slick the menu system is, everything in this game feels streamlined in a good way from the UI to the controls. Running off a hard disk, smooth as butter. Also hasn't running burnt discs always been slower than running the game legit?

I think I have more trouble with the big/unique monsters than the bosses. Just downed another boss and it was pretty easy again.

Story's starting to ramp up a bit. It's still the same sort of typical JRPG bullshit but the cutscenes are filled with pretty cool action so I don't mind that much.

magus, run it off the hard drive.

And Mitsuda didn't do anything in the ost besides the ending credit song which you're not going to see for another 100 hours.  Shimomura only did like 15% of the tracks too.  The music is by ACE+ and something something Kiyoda.  New baby composers who show they're pretty good with this game!  I hope they get more work.

Also you can't tell anything about the story, the character growth, or the battle strategy in just a few hours.  The game is MASSIVE (took me 120 hours, even if you skip all sidequests the main quest is about 60 hours).

Uniques are awesome because they're like boss fights EVERYWHERE and you can choose when to fight them.  You can do a hard ass battle where you think up great strategies and barely survive after 20 mins of fighting, or you can come back 3-5 levels later and destroy them in 3 mins.  You pretty much set your own difficulty with the game outside 1 boss at the end who is just annoying regardless of level.

A year ago it ran 95% on dolphin, everything fine except the sound would stutter which sucks if you care about the music.  But I know a bunch of people played through the whole game that way and enjoyed the game.

I'm assuming in the last year they've probably improved dolphin, so maybe the sound is fixed now and it's 100%.  Worth a try if you don't have a wii.  Game looks 10x better on Dolphin.

Put in 5 hours now, so far soooo good.. Apart from the graphics lol Wii. I was getting motion sickness from using c+dpad for the camera (seems to be ok now, was pretty tired earlier which probably contributed), and there's a number of graphical things that bug me outside of the dated graphics in general, like the ground textures sharpen as they load just in front of your character as you run around resulting in a weird wobbly line between low res and slightly better res ground textures. I don't really notice it now, but it was bugging me in big open areas earlier. Deus Ex will look incredible next week after playing this.

Is it cool to sell off all the crap like bunniv tails and mechon parts (getting A LOT of these in the current area)? Grinding in this game is awesome btw, good battle system + quick battles = grinding bliss. The lure enemy bit is cool too, lots of little things like this in the battle system make it consistently feel quite strategic. Already beat a couple unique enemies, this big lizard called gwendlyn something in tephra caves was probably the hardest unique so far (that I could actually beat, fuck that big caterpile in tephra). Love how it's generous with the loot too, already got my guys decked out in gemmed armour and weapons, they've seemed to really cut to the meat quick with this game. Pretty refreshing after 5-25 hr long tutorials seem to be in vogue with this genre lately, and uh magoose, you can switch gems in/out. As far as I can tell, gems are only locked in on armour/weapons you find with gems already attached

some loot is required for quests, but other than that i guess it's okay to sell... you can always trade your loot for different kind of loot by pushing 2 (or whatever the equivalent is on the CC) when you are near a named npc

and uh magoose, you can switch gems in/out. As far as I can tell, gems are only locked in on armour/weapons you find with gems already attached

yes i said that unlike diablo you can unequip already attached gem

Pretty refreshing after 5-25 long tutorials seem to be in vogue with this genre lately

the game is still throwing me a lot of tutorial screens even where i am now,so i really don't get people that say this :lol, not that i mind, tutorial screens rock :bow

some system that got introduced in the meanwhile

spoiler (click to show/hide)

- there is a party power bar on the top left that fills as you fight,it has 3 segments, you can consume 1 segment to revive a party member (and party member can use it to revive you otherwise it's game over as soon as the character you control dies) or you can consume 3 segments and activate a chain attack where each party member can spam skills without worrying about cool-down times, apparently the more buddy buddy you are with the character, the more time you have when using chain attacks

- monster drop crystal which comes with properties like agility up,strenght up and the like, you can then refine these into actual gems you can equip by going to a furnace, you pick 2 characters and then they start hammering on the crystals, different character have different hammering skills, since crystals come up with more than a single property, some character ends up focusing on raising single properties and some instead try to raise them all,if you are lucky and pick the right character you end up getting more than a single gem or a better gem than what you would have got normaly

The game looks (relatively) amazing on the emu, and runs decently, but I can't fix the fucking audio. The worst part is that I can't go back to playing it on the Wii now that I've seen it this clean. Tried many tips and builds, but no dice.  I guess I'll check it out later.

Wish I had a PC that could run this on Dolphin.  It looks like FFXII-- tons of detail hidden by low res + wii texture filtering.

also nintendo of america is really dumb for not picking this up.

Figured I'd try out Dolphin for the first time with this game. Graphics are kinda ugly, but maybe I need to readjust the settings or something. Gonna try to fix it later. edit: nevermind, I fixed it. Forgot to change the internal res to 1080p. It looks great now, maybe even above most 360/PS3 games.

Anyway, I thought this game was going to be awesome during the first 15 minutes when you're playing the 3 guys in the war, but then it switches you to a Vaan pretty boy and his redheaded friend. :-\

The audio was skipping and crackling a lot during the first cutscene, but it's been fine ever since. I've only played for an hour or so though.

my only complaint about this game is that the main character is wearing a straight-up 1980s female skiing outfit.   That's not even Japanese fashion or weird fantasy fashion or Nomura belts n zippers or anything-- it's a 1980s female skiing outfit and there's no denying it.
