I was at Best Buy yesterday, and they had just put up these enormous "HP TOUCHPAD!!!" ads on the front of the building, like 10x30 feet sized. I went past two BB's and both of them had one.

If these end up being super cheap I'll totally buy one and then fake like I was a WebOS nerd from the beginning.

Looks like buying Palm was a HUGE mistake.

HP:

If I could get Android to run on one of these things I'd pick it up for $50 or so.

I want one for cheap too. No contract pixi for vzw is $45 on amazon

Hp is a multibiollion dollar company, theyve had palm for over a year and managed to get out one phone, one tablet, and fold up a month later. Pathetic.

How is the hackability/independent support now that HP has washed their hand of things (I'm not to familar with how webOS cooperates with everything else)

It says not available in store when I look. Also it's probably too late/rainy for me to try that.

Not the end of the world I guess. I will check Amazon at midnight.

Is there some other store that has a price guarantee? Maybe staples or something?

It's crazy that they're ditching it before they even get a real new flagship phone out the door. The Pre 3 was just about to launch. What a huge money sink.

I always liked the user interface for WebOS too, and the keyboards...  :(

Before the first iPad came out I swore id never get one- then I did. I used it so much that when the iPad 2 came out and I was in the same building with it I picked up the highest end model. I'll buy the next version too.

Then again before World of Warcraft came out I swore i'd never play that, and I did...maybe a little too much. Apparently im just an early adopter h8tr

I have a feeling there must be some kind of weird accounting shenanigans going on with this abrupt announcement and immediate liquidation, it's like HP's looking for a huge loss.
Seems like they could have done this a lot more quietly and gradually.

They killed Voodoo PC, now they're killing WebOS :maf

HP :piss2 On the other hand, I'm pretty keen on one of these. I always thought (from my limited exposure) that webOS was really nice  :'( If I can find a vendor that will ship to NZ I will happily pay 99 US + shipping, don't care about dead eco-system and whatnot. Nice IPS display and I can browse the net/watch flash video on it = Already better than iPad and most Android tablets (pre Honeycomb android tablets :lol)

Seems like it's only NA that's having a firesale, but I don't see why it won't spread to other regions soon...this just seemed to have been sprung on NA retailers last night.

Got one.  I went to the Wal-mart across the street from me which only had one 32GB in stock, waited around 15 minutes for a manager to show up, and when he did he was all "dur-hur we don't price match the website it's prolly a glitch or a hack or sumthin lol" even though I explained what was going on. Decided to try the one 5 minutes down the road, and the manager there was pretty hip to what was going on, she'd already been asked about it by an employee.  They had around 10 in total, and as I was getting mine a couple of employees came around to buy, too :lol

Went with a 16GB.  Figured if I hated it it's better to lose $100 than $150.  Another consideration is that once the battery is dead on this thing, that's it, who knows if any third party will make replacements.  I also remembered when I had my 32GB iPad I always had about 12GB free space, and that was positively crammed with comics/bullshit apps/etc.  I never put videos or music on it, so I can live with 16GB.  I want to try and get another iPad sometime next year, if they go with the rumored Retina display.  This will be a neat little comic/ebook reader/toy until then.  I'm sure the homebrew community will keep doing stuff with it for a while.

Build quality is a bit suspect.  Mine had a couple of slight scuffs on the back straight out of the box (that glossy plastic feels kinda cheap), and there are flaws and imperfections where the plastic meets the front glass.  For $99 I'm not gonna complain, but I'd have been pissed had I sprang the original $500 for it.

I've only registered with WebOS and played around in the menus so far, but the touch typing feels good and responsive.  I like what I've seen so far with the neat drop down settings bar on the top right.  Screen looks really nice, not quite as good as the iPad did but viewing angles are great.  Installing the system update now, which is taking forever.

There's only one .cbr/.cbz reader, called ComicShelf HD.  It's $2.  Decent, could be better, seems like the dev is on top of updates though (I believe he's gonna continue to support it).  You pinch to zoom, swipe left/right to change pages.  There's no way to organize your collection, and it doesn't save where you left off.  Pretty barebones, but works.  Comics look awesome on the IPS screen, as good as they do in the iPad.

Just got back with a 32gb. Initially ordered a 16gb but once I heard tell of Android being ported over I figure I might load it up with apps I never would be able to fill with webOS.

Good thing too, because I bought both through in store pickup (and was just going to let the first order lapse) and they cancelled my 16gb order but the 32gb order couldn't have gone more smoothly.

Just from playing around with it so far:

Having flash is really, really nice.  It drags sometimes, but it's a hell of a lot better than a page dotted with ? boxes everywhere.

Man, I totally dig typing on this.  All essential keys are present, and you don't have to dig through submenus for often-use punctuation marks, etc.  There's a free app called Typewriter which uses Markdown for rich text.

I'm genuinely impressed with the UI.  The word "intuitive" is way overused, but it really is.  I'm swiping all over the place.  The card system of layering your open apps on top of each other like a poker hand you flick through is awesome.  It isn't nearly as bad as the reviews suggested - but then again, I did the patch/update, and it may have been a mess before.  I wish Jobs would steal some of these ideas.

It's a bummer that the app catalog will never get fleshed out with apps by some of the big players like Netflix, but there is a decent amount of stuff out there already.
I don't even really want to hack it to Android, I'm finding WebOS so easy to use.

My screen has some light bleed in one corner, noticeable on the black boot screen but nowhere else (so far).  Again, suspect build quality on these things, not a lot of polish.  I was thinking about buying a case, but I'm not spending 1/4 of what I paid for the tablet on one.  I have an old netbook sleeve, that'll do.

The speakers sound great, full and rich.

All in all, I'm very happy with it for $99.  It's got a lot of nice features, and absolutely blows away any of those busted-ass Android 2.2/3 craptablets like Pandigital or Cruz.  I can read my comics and ebooks on it, I can type out notes and research, and I can listen to internet radio while I am doing it.  That's 90% of what I did on the iPad, so good enough for now.

The biggest problem, I think, was HP launching this thing at iPad prices with a limited app store.  They should've launched it in the $350 price range, made some deals for expected apps like Netflix/Hulu/etc. to come pre-installed - and most of all, optimized the fucking OS before they shipped it.  With the lack of hardware polish (seriously, the plastic back looks like a giant remote control), the buggy launch UI, and a dearth of apps, it is almost as if HP threw this thing out the door as quickly as possible knowing they were gonna shut it all down in a couple of months and take the write off.

I'm liking it too, my only problem is I'd kinda like to get every app under the sun that tickles my fancy and obviously at this point that's a bit of a dead end with webOS, though I haven't really checked out the app store so maybe I'll be sated.

I bought it as a cheap ereader, casual web browser (and maybe a get back into comics, comics browser) so anything beyond that is just gravy.

If webOS still had the potential for app support that Android has I don't think I'd give trying a switch a second thought.
