Warhammer 40k: Space Marine
« on: August 20, 2011, 10:16:21 AM »
demo is out now for people who preorder, will be out next week for everyone.

the demo has two missions. one seems to be just a normal mission showing off the combat with the various guns and the chainsword combo. the second mission is a mission where you're given a jump pack. all told it's around a half hour in length.

the game feels like Darksiders in terms of the basic melee combat. that would make sense because the game is actually running on the Darksiders engine. it's a lot of basic X X X or X X X X Y kind of combos, so it's not going to be a really deep melee combat action game. i found it fun though because even though it's simple, you're chopping through Orks by the dozens and a lot of the time they're just exploding in a shower of blood.
one thing i found interesting is that there is no regen for the health and there aren't any health packs at all. your armor does regen but that gets drained pretty quick. so you may be wondering then how you replenish your health. well the only way to do this is to perform executions on enemies. every basic enemy can be stunned during a combo by pressing Y. so you'll do an X X X combo and finish it with Y which will stun the enemy. then you press B at them and you'll be thrown into a really awesome execution animation. at the end of the animation you get a big chunk of health. TBH I'm not really sure how I feel about this mechanic yet. I think I'll need to see it in context of the full game to pass judgement. from the demo though you don't really get damaged that much from the basic enemies so it never really became a problem.

the second demo mission is with a jump pack and this just adds the ability to fly up in the air and then come smashing down and killing all the enemies in your general vicinity. it's not the kind of jetpack you're used to though as you can't hover or anything. it's mostly to do large jumps to higher terrain or as i mentioned to get some altitude so you can smash down and kill dudes. i takes a bit to get used to because you dont really have a lot of time once you jump up before you're already falling so if you're gonna smash down you have to decide quick.

there's also guns and shit like i said and that is pretty standard really. you got guns and a crosshair and you shoot dudes. the weapons feel big and powerful and enemies explode in blood when they die still. also there's no kind of cover system or any of that shit.

so overall i definitely enjoyed what i played. i'm hoping the full game will have some well designed and interesting gameplay scenarios though because i can see this getting boring if they're just going to rest on just throwing more and more dudes at you for 8-10 hours. there are other weapons besides the chainsword but they aren't in the demo. so that will add some variety. and i would like some more varied combos as well. i don't imagine it's going to be any more like Darksiders beyond the basic look and combat feel so i'm not going to expect zelda like puzzle solving.

In general anything from Dan Abnett is gold. Gaunts Ghosts is wowza and Eisenhorn and Ravenor are also excellent. Not really a lot of space marines in those though. Whats great about his 40k work is that hes essentially crafted a section of the 40k universe that is entirely his own- so if you follow his stuff you can REALLY get into it.

A good SPACE MARINE-centric entry into the universe that I would recommend is where it all started for me - Grey Knights Omnibus- over the top awesome space marine fights against demons/chaos; all three books complete a single arc which is nice. Also the once off Helsreach and Battle of the Fang Space Marine Battles books are a lot of fun too.

What, no mention of the glorious hero of the Imperium, Ciaphas Cain? I mean, sure, there's basically zero Space Marines, and one can't really appreciate just how tongue in cheek it is without some background, but still. It's about Ciaphas Cain. Hero of the Imperium.

On topic: Looks neat. Will wait for bargain bin, though. Mr. von Backlog is eating my lunch and calling me names inbetween administering painful wedgies.

I actually didnt really get into those- it seems like the author is torn between playing him as kind of a lazy dude and as someone capable. I only read the first book and half of the second tho- probably should give it another go.

I know nothing about Warhammer 40k, but the demo is really fun.  It's a shame that the entire game isn't with the jetpack.

everything feels so brutal.  It's like in Batman AA when you finish off a baddie with a bone shattering, coma inducing punch.  it feels raw like that for everything.  like if you sprint and just let off without pressing back, your guy stays in motion, slowly teetering off from that locomotion.  same with the jetpack.  it explodes to push your guy in the air.

I love the voice of the emperor when you hit super mode

Also, 4chan- once united in anticipation of this game is now split because half are upset an ultramarine shrugged off the codex astartes lol. So basically /v/ went like this:

  • Ultramarines? Boring chapter all they do is follow the rules.
  • Titus says lets not follow the codex astartes.
  • Fucking Relic- this isn't realistic the Ultramarines need to follow rules or its not canon!

Warhammer 40k Defense Force Assemble!

"Overall, when you strip away our automatic affection for the universe, you're left with a simple story full of thin characters and predictable twists, where the combat quickly descends into a repetitive war of attrition, and a small suite of online modes that can't compete with the bigger boys in the genre."

How is this different from any other game mags give AAA ratings to COUGH FF13. Seriously tho- its a better game than Gears of SNORE 2 lulz.

the biggest draw to the game is that it's Warhammer 40k and you're playing an Ultramarine and you can kill Orks. The combat gets by because it looks amazing and brutal.

It's a fun game but I'm not going to exaggerate or bolster it up anymore than that.

so far it needs more jump pack action.

also the "twist":

I'd honestly go for an accessible omnibus, for example my first WARHAMMER 40k read was the Grey Knights Omnibus, which was awesome. Non space marine stuff I'd gravitate towards Dan Abnetts stuff. I've read a lot of 40k books but the Horus Heresy is daunting and due to the fact not every author that contributes to the Heresy series, I suspect quality varies from book to book.
