seems there's a pretty widespread autumn season rolling across the country in a month or so.

let us prey for our tree friends as they lose so much lovely foliage.

You guys don't get earthquakes much, do you?

Interesting how a 5.8 on the east coat gets tons of national news coverage. A 5.8 out here on the west coast would be given only a few minutes of time.

that's because the northeast is more precious to the nation so when something like this happens it's important that we are all ok. nobody cares about california

the news is acting like the US is under attack.

CNN is freaking the fuck out. People need to relax.

edit: CNN footage from NYC has the camera man saying "It's ok, I'm from Seattle we get these all the time, you're going to be fine."

The 2001 Nisqually quake out here was a 6.8. I was working in my university's chemistry lab stock room putting things away when the glass windows started rolling. Creepy stuff.

My roommate stayed in our dorm room playing Nettrek. :lol

I didn't think there were any plate lines along the east coast.  This must be an intraplate quake from movement stress.

Well, to be fair. I don't know what part of Poland Borys is at. I think you're being too hard on him. I don't see why a foreigner should be expected know there's an actual Washington state and that then there's, the DC area.

So long as they know where the USA is, it all works out to me.

It was a shallow, >6 quake. The major dangers come from the east coast not building with earthquakes in mind.

That was interesting. Definitely the biggest I've felt, as I've lived in VA my whole life. People in my office were initially pretty confused but we figured it out by the end of the shaking and went outside to see what was up (and get out of the huge structure). I didn't see any damage, though one thing on my desk did fall over!

for japan, it's a tuesday

yeah, i think Cormacaroni put it as something like "if you are tweeting about it , it's not a real quake" concerning some of the larger aftershocks we had.

But yeah - i remember my first quake here (in the 6.0 range) - i was at work and i pretty much shat myself - i'm sure if people aren't used to it it would give them a bit of a jolt. Heh, i still remember how i felt during the "big one"*

* - wasn't actually "the big one" that Tokyo is overdue.
