I like your thinkin! I generally do from 145-160 on average- ive hit 180 before. Ive only recently started going bowling again so im rusty.

Im not even convinced I want to buy shoes- really the ball thing is all about getting used to a very specific weight and feel every time you bowl- different balls different days fucks shit up bad

buying shoes isn't a big deal either, since you need to rent shoes there every time anyway

What about different bowling alleys? Maybe it's just me, but I've been to 3 different ones in the past month and they all feel completely different. Pisses me off.

Get shoes, mang. First, you can get a decent pair for forty-some bucks, which pays for itself if you bowl regularly. Second, having a consistent slide is actually really helpful. I bowled youth for years and didn't get my own pair of shoes until I was done growing. I figured personal shoes were just a status thing for kids who wanted to act all serious business about it, but when I got my own I was all "omg, what have I been missing?"

Ditto your own ball. Find an alley ball you feel comfortable with and order one the same weight. Even if you make a "wrong" pick you'll do better just from using the same equipment.

Your average is plenty high to not be embarrassed about getting shoes and a ball. It's probably at a point where it'll be hard to improve if you don't buy some, actually.

I actually had my own bowling ball that I never got holes drill in for my fingers. It was a promotion for this summer junior bowling league. At some point, it just vanished from the garage.
