So with the death of my precious Borders buying trashy sci-fi/fantasy books is becoming more of a hassle than going the e-book route. I have a iPad 2 but the battery life and screen just isn't very good for lengthy reading of books.

Is the Kindle the way to go? I don't know anything else about the other e-readers out on the market. I don't need another tablet, I have the iPad for that. I just want something with the most books available with a long battery life and a great e-ink screen.

the best e-reader on the market is the Nook Touch.

but a new Kindle is going to be announced pretty soon so I would wait to see what it ends up being.

Nook>Kindle

You're talking about the Borders on Washtenaw right, ie the one where I saw you get in the back seat of your mom's car. My parents went there every day during the various going-out-of-business sales, but I didn't go until the final day. All they had was romance and detective books  :-\

They opened a Borders on Lohr that was just across the street from my condo I bought last year. I walked over there almost every day. Closed like only a year after they opened it.  :'( Losing the downtown borders is still hard to grasp to me, that was the very first Borders ever.

Every B&N near me is nicer than Borders.

B&N here is nicer too and always has much better selection of books but Borders that takes 3-4 minutes to talk to versus 15 min+ driving? Always picked Borders.

Yea our B&N is awesome, even has escalators and shit. But I always preferred the simplicity of Borders, just being able to walk in right quick, get what I want, then walk out

Why, what's better about it?

Why, what's better about it?

the Nook Touch has an improved eInk Pearl screen that has a faster refresh rate.

for me, the physical design is better as well.

Like I said earlier, Amazon will be showing their next Kindle pretty soon and I'll most likely be better than the Nook so i would wait for that.

B&N has a decent ebook selection? I was under the impression Amazons was way better than them or Apple

Barnes & Noble has a bigger ebook selection than Amazon.

Quality many be a different matter, but I've only run into a few books that I was interested in that had Kindle releases that didn't have Nook releases.

Plus the Nook makes piracy easy.

Yeah, with the Nook, you can just drag-and-drop anything in the EPUB or PDF format.

it can't read epub, but you can load mobi files.

The easiest way to convert formats is with Calibre, which is basically itunes for your e-reader.

http://calibre-ebook.com/

import into your library (which is just your collection of ebooks)  then convert them to whatever format you want.

if you bought the books, you'll probably have to strip the drm.  This blog entry tells you how to do so easily
http://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/ebooks-formats-drm-and-you-%E2%80%94-a-guide-for-the-perplexed/

The only issue is that if you update calibre, it doesn't bring your plug ins along, so you'll have to reinstall the plug ins above and re-enter your info to remove the drm.

Er, you do that with Kindle as well.  Calibre address the ability to convert .epub to .mobi (and vice versa) and strip DRM from both.

The ability to treat the ereader as a USB drive isn't unique to either brand

It's just like "convert to MP3" before you drag onto your player. Trust me, there's noooo problem putting fre'eBooks on your Kindle.

Fuck the kindle. Went to charge it this morning and the screen and screen saver were fine. Charged it and after about ten minutes it has black lines going across it and Amazon tells me its a common failure. I've had it barely over a year so no more warranty. They'll let me upgrade to the new Gen kindle for 60 but I really want a nook.
