I haven't moved much- and while I am not moving FAR (different building) I do have a month in advance to get DUCKS IN A ROW. Suggestions for the handling of said ducks?

Start packing about a week in advance of the actual move day. Recruit friends to help move stuff and then repay them with food and drink.

Make sure you get all your utilities switched ASAP. If you've got Comcast, do this soon.

Yeah, I would start packing way far in advance. I'm lazy, so when I moved I knew this and made allowances- I started packing like one box a night a month out, but then again I had an entire house to pack and not just an apartment.

Also- LABEL BOXES. Cause when you get everything into your new place, you're gonna wanna know what shit is in what box so you can unpack vital stuff first.

Seconded. Also agree w/ Positive Touch- whenever I move, I look at everything I own and am like "do I really use this? can I see myself NEEDING this in the future?" If the answer is no, I get rid of it either through charity or trash.

Buy uniform boxes from Office Depot or OfficeMax (they are often on sale).

DO NOT overpack fucking books. Lots of small boxes, not big boxes that weigh 150 lbs.

After doing like 6 trips across the city when I moved I would recommend this. It's money well spent.

Getting utilities set up is tough, even if you organise it well ahead they will always be one part that is slow that affects everything else.

good advice itt. the few times we moved everything was pretty much boxed up almost a month in advance. you'd be surprised how little you use most things lol.

somehow we always worked it to where we didn't have to get everything done in one day...moved in chunks pretty much over the course of a week or so. may have been poor planning, but it worked out.

how high up is yr apartment/the new one?

But ill be good- its not really the size of what im moving- he'll the main reason im moving is because I couldnt have a full couch in my current place. If anything the issue is with the sheer volume of crap ive got.

EDIT: I should probably mention that I moved from a 2nd floor apartment to a 2-story condo and between my cookbooks, graphic novels, SF and plain old books had 45 boxes of about 40-50 lbs each. No one is that much of a friend.

The other plus of hiring professional movers - we were completely out of our old place and completely moved into the new within 4 hours - including loading, driving, and unloading - with no damage to any of our furniture. Your friends are unprofessional assholes who WILL carry a bookcase straight into the wall.

I have a friend who has a similar problem as you except that his condo is stuffed with all sorts of toys. Once he was able to make money, dude bought ridiculous amounts of Japanese robots, LOTR statues, movie collectibles, etc. Recently he bought a 7ftx6ftx1.5ft glass display to put some of those toys in but that's still not enough to hold a third of his collection.

lol- my stuff is mostly like books, dvds/blurays n shit. Im getting about another 220 sq ft- the apartment is also laid out a lot smarter than the one im currently in. Yes I could put a couch in my current living room, but the only place that faces the wall with the television hookups has a heater vent right next to it- so its like wtfffff- the new one also looks like it'll have better airflow with windows open. Also the view is even nicer than my current patio view- which is hard to believe.

I always start the lease of the new place 15 days in advance so that I have two weeks to move. And wtf at people not asking their friends? I've got two friends and we always help each other move. In this last move I told them not to worry about it because I had plenty of time and I'd do it. I was moving boxes at 7am and around 7:30am both of them showed up with an additional truck and told me they weren't going to let me do it myself. That's what friends do, mang.

Either way, if you can afford it I'd pay someone. I did it once and it only cost about 200 bucks but was well worth it. I've just been too jew to do it since.

Have fun with all the extra space. I went from a 780 sq ft apartment to a 2600 square foot house. It was a jizzm jazzm!

People just make it sound forceful like "save your back and your friendship". *shrug* It's never that big of a deal to my friends that it would cause any problem.

My last apartment was three stories. Whoooooooo. Moving in and everytime I came home drunk was enough for me to know that I would never get anything but a first story again.

When I moved a few weeks ago, I packed and moved nearly everything myself that could carried by one person, and what was left for moving day wasn't more than a relatively effortless hour's work for the cost of a pizza and a few sixers of beer. I figure that's about what's expected.
