Fall/Winter must buys
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:04:52 AM »
Not another list thread?!

In all seriousness, I enjoy these, mostly to see what's on everyone's radar.  I haven't been gaming much of late, but they're still some titles that I'm excited this fall/winter season, or spring/summer for you Aussies and below the equator folk.

Must buys:

Zelda: Skyward Sword: I'm a sucker for the console Zeldas--never got into the portables, even though get high praise.  It's Zelda.  Dungeons, puzzles, overworld, etc.  I'm also loving the art direction in this one and the recent trailer looked decent even though it's running on 10 year old hardware.

Skyrim: I was engrossed with Oblivion on the 360--I know, I know--loving all the upgrades they're making to Skyrim.  The character models and lighting are a vast improvement.

Really that's all I can think of--Gears 3, Uncharted 3, all seem more of the same.  I'll wait for for the Platinum/GH versions.

I can't think of any portable stuff.  Vita isn't out in my territory till 2012 and I'm not getting a 1st gen 3DS, especially knowing that a dual  circle pad revision in most likely in the works.  Super Mario 3D Land looks great, though.

Skyrim - I'm a Bethesda nut and this looks like it could be their best game yet.

Batman: Arkham City - Loved the first game, really looking forward to where they take the sequel with all the new areas and villains.

Rage - Not technically a "Must Buy" since I already bought it, but I was impressed by what I saw and played at QuakeCon so I think this is going to be one of the top games of the year.

Saints Row: The Third - Even if I didn't play and love the second game, all the crazy, over-the-top things their doing would make this a "Must Buy". It's also a "Must Preorder" for that awesome Professor Genki pack.

That's probably about what I'll buy for myself, might slide a few things on the Christmas list [like Skyward Sword].

I think there are a lot of must buys this year that I can't buy.  November is a fucking asshole.

I already own Batman Arkham City, so obviously that.

Dark Souls - Sequel to Demon's Souls. Enough said.

King of Fighters XIII - Good gameplay, lots of content, hopefully online play is decent

Guardian Heroes - Classic belt-scrolling action. I just hope the netcode isn't shit, like all of Treasure's games thus far

Doesn't look like I'll be buying anything else this year. Maybe if some games hit dumpster prices on Steam during the holiday sales (SSF4AE for <$10 please).

my MUST BUYS have thankfully been whittled down due to me having a very busy schedule.

Saints Row the Third: Day friggn one. So pumped for this. Have a preorder placed.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record: yeah, its a re-hash, but it sounds like theyve added some awesome new features, and I have such a hard on for the franchise.

Guardian Heroes: love me side scrollin BEU action, and I love Treasure. Day 1 also.

I may get Gears 3 shortly, too.

I know my roomie quietID is getting Dark Souls, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim, so I'll just play his copies of those.

oh, I want to get all the old HD re-releases too, like Silent Hill collection, Metal Gear collection, and Resident Evil HD re-issues, but Ive played all the games already, so I'll just get these during a dry period

Skyrim: I took days off work to play Oblivion. This game is my jam.
Saints Row: God fucking damn right I am.
Batman: I don't usually pay full price for single-player games that don't have obscene amounts of content, I'll probably put this in the Cheap Ass Gamer price tracker at $34. I expect it to hit that within 4 weeks.

Probably Zelda and... honestly this 4th quarter is even less interesting to me than last year's. Maybe Saints Row 3 if I ever get to finishing the second one since I never got very far in it.

What.

The combat was decent, it was more a mini-game than a brawler which was fine for what it was (a metroidvania adventure game, not an action game) and the length was perfect for the type of game it was.  It wasn't bogged down by filler and had good pacing with lots of optional secrets.  I don't want longer games in my non-rpgs!

ULTIMATE MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 3 - Duh.

Does the new Batman fix the shitty combat system and the extremely short length from the first game?

I think most people were pretty happy with the combat, so probably not.  It was simple, fluid and intuitive and fit the game type about as well as it could.  The main problem was with a lack of enemy variety and thus repetition, and I would have to assume that would be improved in the sequel.

I did play the original MGS3 when it came out and I loved it (still one of my favorite games), but I never got the Super version. I always wanted to play Peace Walker too, but I never bothered since it was on PSP. :-[

Skyrim: I've never played an Oblivion but this looks awesome. I'm kind of concerned about the combat gameplay though; looks kind of awkward.

Guild Wars 2: Does it come out this year? If not, I'll get in the beta hopefully. Looks amazing, addresses nearly every problem I have with WoW. Finally a game that looks like it could actually impact WoW, which is bleeding players right now due to stale gameplay. I hate to sound like Etoilet but yea bros, this looks gud

Batman AA has great combat.  It's like a rhythm game and getting into the flow of it, you can take down a bunch of guys in one flowing combo.  Batman AC is improving it by throwing in more enemies at once, better integrating gadgets/weapons into combos and including multiple counters and takedowns.

Lengthwise it seems to be longer because it's open world and each villain has their own set of missions.  Some haven't been revealed yet but it's already much larger than Arkham Asylum.  Plus it has New Game Plus to fully upgrade your gear and they remix the game and enemies to add difficultly.  Also, Catwoman missions.

you need motion plus to play it and it's sold in two packages (both come with a music CD I think)

game alone is $50
game with a gold Wii Remote Plus (Wii Remote with the Motion Plus built in) is $70

if you buy the game alone, you need to already own a Motion Plus or Wii Remote Plus to play it

You're buying it on 360?

X360 version doesn't offer free online gaming. So that version automatically falls off. And the Demon's Souls DS3 controls were perfect.

Ps3 version day one. Will probably be the better version anyway.

Dark Souls - my only day 1 must buy for the rest of the year...

There's a whole bunch of games I want to play comin out later this year, but having time to finish what I've got is hard enough atm so I'm not going to bother buying more games till I've finished a few more games.

I might fold for Skyrim day 1 as well... Maybe UC3 too, love me some Nathan Drake :heartbeat

Seriously, all those Demon's Souls fans are indignant whenever anyone calls it cheap.  But then they give you tips on beating it like "shoot enemies with soul arrows from distances too far for them to see you" or "shoot Red Dragon with 300 arrows".  WTF
If it's not a cheap as hell game, why would you need all those BS tactics?

Nah, Demon's Souls was actually a very well-designed, unique, and innovative game - more than worthy of all of its accolades. It was also a breath of fresh air, since modern developers are rapidly moving toward vapid AAAAAAAAA blockbuster visceral cinematic experiences.

Not at all, actually this is why I love From Soft and why I still have some hope for Steel Battalion Kinect. They don't change, they'll just keep on doing what they do until they can't do it no more.

Armored Core 5 will be awesome too.
