Masked gunmen blocked traffic on a busy avenue in a Gulf of Mexico coastal city Tuesday and dumped the bodies of 35 slaying victims as horrified motorists watched, authorities said.

If Mexico was in the middle east, we would have already invaded the crap out of it.

I know everyone's joking when they say this but the reason the US can't invade is the badguys aren't part of a visible government or shielded/helped by the visible government.  The mexican government is vocally against the cartels, so what can the US do besides driving around shooting up mexicans and saying they were all drug dealers?  That would be pretty iffy.

shoot some fucking tomahawks at some of these cartel locations and call it a day.  it should be done surprisingly in conjunction with the mexican government.  Just put a huge dent in the organizations.  :smug

I'm just making this up not based on facts but most of the drugs coming from Mexico are hard drugs worth real money.

True enough. Buying drugs will definitely be adding to this problem but it's not like people are just going to stop buying drugs.

Which ain't likely. Because those are hard drugs people who want them CRAVE.

The real kicker is the war on drugs. It has failed and caused far too much pain. Get rid of it.

I have heard that marijuana makes up a majority of the profits for the cartels, in addition to coke.

you're absolutely right Boogie, but would they still be if crossing the magical border didn't increase their value by 1000%?

A fair question.

Actually, I'm not even sure I buy Himu's statement as is.  Are there any actual studies estimating the amount grown domestically vs. imported?  Or is himu just using the scientific "the weed me and my friends get is grown by my buddy, so I assume that's the same for most people"?

Well, there are of course different camps even within the "Pro-legalization" stance.

Pro-legalization of marijuana, but continued prohibition of hard drugs?  Usually based on argument that marijuana use is no more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol.
Libertarian position of pro-legalization of all drugs?  Based on idea of "liberty" to choose to put anything in one's body, regardless of harm.
What I call "balance of harm" Legalization of all drugs?  Based on theory that, in spite of harm of hard drugs, all drugs should be legalized because it is prohibition itself that allows for the violence and leads to greater costs for society than the alternative of legalization.

So legalization means different things to different people, and results in different arguments presented.

Depends entirely upon what part of the country you're from.

There are more cannabis plants per capita here than anywhere else in the country not named Hawaii. And even then it's close. That being said, Kentucky still sees a LOT of brick weed. Not this time of year though, it's outdoor indica season.

Non-Psychedelic Hard drugs (Coke, Heroin, Speed) are worth a hell of alot (100s of times more) more money, though. Heroin is beginning to get to be a big deal around here, which is unfortunate. They just popped a guy I went to school with with 80 kilos of uncut heroin, worth $130,000+ apiece. That motherfucker still owes me money from the old school days.

I've kept hearing about Ohio-grown good weed but have yet to see anything that would bring more than ten a gram during a weed drought here. And don't say I haven't smoked with enough people from up there either, that statement would be foolish if you knew me.

Indiana on the other hand is British Colombia South. Way better weed for way less than their neighbors to the east. Wish I knew the lay of the land up there better, actually, and that says ALOT coming from me.

Boogie, or anyone else in the know, I have question.  I've been watching lots of docs on drugs/gangs lately which is why this comes up.  If pot is mostly homegrown, how much of it is gang controlled?

An exact percentage is impossible to guess at, but the marijuana trade in Canada is huge and organized.  Organized crime has a huge hand in the marijuana trade, be it Biker gangs, East Asian Organized Crime, traditional Italian OC, or Eastern European OC.

But a lot of the drug trade these days exists in more flexible, informal networks rather than traditional rigid hierarchies.

If you wanted something more detailed to read, here is the 2009 Report on the Illicit Drug Situation in Canada:

So you're saying the Afghanistan government was actively assisting Al Qaeda there? I mean, the gov't was maybe ignoring it, possibly being paid off by Al Qaeda... that kind of corruption doesn't exist in Mexico? What about the USA's actions in Pakistan?

If it were a priority, America could field a group of Special Forces that could make the whole thing look like a hit from a rival gang...

Hey...
