I must apologise though as I just looked up the Genesis palette, and it's actually 512 colours.  Which is only 32,256 short of the SNES.

......AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh, and Thunderforce was cute, but

Yeah, it was such a disappointment how bad the N64's sound chip was compared to the PS1, Saturn (which had a fantastic sound chip), and even the SNES.

Genesis chip was great for metal, industrial and EDM though. The sound effects were pretty awful, sounded like robots farting.

Then you're being a dumbass. The Genesis and the SNES were so neck and neck that preferring one of them usually was due to bias(Nintendo mostly), they are the 2 greatest 2D systems ever.

he's going to say neo geo.  of course he is going to say neo geo.

Neo-Geo was the beast of its day.  Dirty poors don' know.  :smug

Genesis, SNES, Neo-Geo, and the PCE all had their good points.

I had the SNES back then, but ended up preferring the Genesis in the end.  Had both the Neo and the Turbo Duo later on.

The side-scrolling parts of Axelay alone still beat the pants off Thunderforce 4.  As did the three other shootemups I posted.

I'm positive Bildi has never player Thunderforce

We're comparing Genesis and SNES, this has nothing to do with playing games.

I'd never even heard of a Nintendo console before I was a teenager, and I had a PS1 by then. I loved Master System and SMD though. 'twas truly the land of Sega (then Sony) over here. Not one person I knew had anything Nintendo till N64....

I remember when I was in hospital overnight when I was 8, they had NES in the childrens ward. I was like: WTF is this thing?!

I then played SMB1 for 5 hours straight. Good times.

UN Squadron is pretty rad.  It was a game I rented enough times that I could have bought the game, and then I did buy the game.  And then a month ago when I bought a Super Fami, I bought it again.  My only real knock on it is that it's a touch on the easy side.

Thunderforce is still better, though.  It's not UN Squadron's fault, Thunderforce had more installments to refine things, but it is the better shooter.

Did you play UN Squadron on "gamer" mode where you hold L+R and push right a few times? It definitely wasnt easy.

As for Axelay... well, let me just say it's easy to spot the kids who only had a SNES, because they put a mediocre shooter like Axelay up on some kind of pedestal.

Yes, it's the only way I've played UN Squadron for ages now.  The only thing crazy about it is the speed of the bullets.  On the other hand, you still have a life bar, you still benefit from the SNES slowdown feature, and you can still "level up" the more you play.  In UN Squadron, when you die, you get to come back in a better position than you were in before, unless you blew a lot of cash on weapons.  In, say, Gradius, when you die, you hit the fucking reset button.

But it is much easier to get hit in UN squadron than in Gradius.  I beat "life force" (gradius 2) rather easily.

As for having to reset when you die, that is just bad game design.

The rest I'll give you but Bonanza Bros as among the best games ever on the Genesis?  I mean, I guess it was a faithful conversion, but it was a bit too easy for a home console game.

Another arcade game that wasn't as awesome on consoles:

Goddam it rocked in the arcades.  But it needed the steering wheels.  I miss it. :'(

But in terms of actual awesome home console racers:

As far as shmups go, the PC Engine/PCE CD had both Genesis and SNES beat - Blazing Lazers, Gate of Thunder, Lord of Thunder, Air Zonk, Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Ordyne, the best ports of R-Type and Gradius I/II at the time, and like a million more... seriously it seems like 90% of the PCE library is shmup.

Street Fighter II Special Championship Edition (lol name) felt closer, overall, to the CPS1 version.  It also had the few missing things the SNES version lacked, like the arcade intro and all of the voice/sounds.  Ditto for Super.

Nowadays though, who fucking cares?  All those old ports suck when you can play the arcade versions, either in compilations or emulated.

Come on, lyte, Matrimelee was released in 2003 and Rage of the Dragon was 2002.

...On the same ol' Neo-Geo hardware!  Still cart music!   :D
