Genesis always sounded funky for me. (Not necessarily a bad thing of course.) Sonic series had some decent tunes though.

There was a thread on GAF a while ago about SNES songs converted to Genesis, holy HELL did they sound awful! Truly a gaming sacrilege if there ever was one.

What really sold me on the SNES's sound was Mega Man X. What a rocking soundtrack!

actually, a lot of those snes songs converted to genesis sound great. they sound different, but hardly awful.

Yes, they are awesome.  But you cannot possibly maintain that 8-bit chiptunes are awesome and then roll your eyes at FM synth.  Not with any kind of consistency, anyway.

I just said it sounded funky, not that I hated it. And I don't know if FM synth is the only thing I find off about Genesis' sound, either. Genesis tracks feel really... "weighty?" Hard to describe.
