Yeah, the unsubsidized prices are indeed insane, but it beats going the other route imo, especially since the products have great resale value.

Having said that, I think I'm gonna stick to the 16GB model. :-[ Anything more would be a waste if my current usage is anything to go by.

(Although I have a feeling it's going to dramatically change when iCloud gets rolled out)

16gb unlocked $650
16gb on contract $200, ETF max $375 = $575. Etfs drops as the contract goes on

I guess I should have said "contract is not an option since I'll be importing." The unsubsidized prices are pretty much the standard price for iPhones where I live.

Pre-ordered a 64 GB iPhone 4S with a 10 GB data plan today.

10 GB seems like a lot but it will be my primary source of internet so it seems reasonable, considering.

Dcharlie read the contract, summarized it, and I still can't understand it well enough to make a decision. In short: I will still avoid Softbank because they seem utterly crooked. And the service sucks, according to the majority of people I know on that service.

sounds like a classic case of the large print giveth and the small print taketh away, will pass i guess.

I see no reason to get excited about 4S whatsoever, worst update ever.

Wait, what's this iPad2 thing?  Do you need to have an iPhone or can you be an existing customer?  I'm sick of SB's crap signal and my friends with iPhones always seem to have issues in some areas, so I was planning to go to AU.  AU has some pretty nice deals if you switch over for the iPhone 4S, but if I can score an iPad2 from SB, I might reconsider!

Just realized my contract has been up for awhile. On a 3GS now, which is still functioning and in great shape. Feels like I just got it a year ago. Held up way better than my old 3G (which limped along a year). Probably will get the 4steve, and keep my 3GS as a backup. I've been paying $15 in insurance on this fucker for 2 years (which saved my ass when the 3G died, so it was worth it), but shit. I could drop the insurance, have a good back-up, and get a newer phone, and it's basically like they're paying me to take if off their hands. It's what Steve would want. :usacry

Now to convince the man...    Ahh, fuck him, he has an newer Galaxy, and that piece of shit got us lost last weekend. Ordering it as soon as I get a chance.

it's going around that it's FREE IPAD2 but that's not the case

the deal is this :

1) if you pay upfront for the ipad (44,800 yen) then you 1860 yen a month discount on the basic 3G access for two years - hence the cost for the <100mb 3G plan + ipad per month (because you bought it upfront) is 0 yen. Step over 100mb and you are going to get charged extra - you are on this plan for two years, if you try to leave you lose your discount and have to pay the remaining balance on the 1860 yen for the data plan that they were refunding you.

2) however, you do NOT get the monthly discount if you buy the ipad in monthly installments which , coincidentally, works out around 1860 yen a month as well. In this case you get a "Free Ipad" in that you would be paying 1860 yen that you would pay for the basic lowest 3G data plan anyways. You are of course locked into a 2 year plan and the second you go over 100mb in a month you're going to get charged the extra. Leaving the plan also has penalties as per above.

So - all in all - there is no free ipad, it's going to cost you the price of an ipad one way or the other!

Huh, only 100MB a month?  I'd use that shit up in a week I'm sure.  There's no way to upgrade to a better plan?

Eh, I think I'll just go through with AU.  Maybe I'll hit up the SB store to see if they'll give me any incentive to stay, but I think moving will be best in the long run.

iOS 5. :bow Fantastic OS. Can't imagine what they can add to it for iOS 6. This is one main reason I can never switch to Android. Every time I play around with a droid it just feels so clunky compared to iOS. No real loyality to actual Apple hardware but god damn that mobile OS is amazing.

There is plenty of voice reginition software but nothing on the same level as Siri. Apple bought that company a little while ago.

Pretty sure you can get one if you camp out at one of the stores selling them.  Apple is probably your best bet, but you'd have to get there pretty damn early.  I just know that they're easier to get in and out with ease for a new product.

ugh, camping out for a product is something I've always avoided.  I decided to stick with AT&T after talking with people in my area on both networks (whuts sprint) and AT&T is supposedly better than Verizon.

how early? they open at 8 am.  like, 7:30 am?

oh, and is it true that save data from apps/games is deleted if you delete the app itself? I was planning on getting the 16 gig but if that's the case, might as well go with 32 and horde.

Well, for games I know you can save most your achievements, but save games are pretty much fucked.  Most apps just link date with a connecting facebook or email account, so there's no worry about data with them, really.

And honestly, I'd get there at 6, possibly even earlier.  Never underestimate applefags.

so...what are the apps you need for this thing? I've been using an ordinary cellphone since 2006.  app and stuff are lost on me.

also, do I need itunes? I have it installed on my laptop because I won't install it on my main PC, but if I can get by on the phone itself, I'm all for that.

Siri not working correctly is a server-side error; all of it other than voice-to-text is going through Apple's servers to find its information.  It'll work correctly in a few days or so.

Virtual analog sticks are terrible, yes, and I'd never bother with a game that uses them unless they use them REALLY well.  Stick to games that use the strengths of the phone.

As for apps: Hipstamatic, Instagram, Facebook, Tweetbot, Alien Blue, Facebook Mssenger, Dragon Go, Words with Friends, Comiczeal, Find My iPhone, IMDb, HBO Go, Incredibooth, Flixster, Netflix, RunPee, Bump, Beejive IM, Foursquare, GroupMe, LinkedIn, Groupon, GetGlue, IntoNow, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, Spotify, forkly, Starbucks, Momento, Pulse News, just to name a few.

see I wish the app store wasn't so unorganized to make finding apps difficult.  this is my first time really using the app store and it's a mess.

I like the phone.  heavier than expected but my old phone weighed practically nothing, so the 4s feels like 3 or 4 times heavier.  some things generally feel cumbersome, like getting a new ringtone.  on my old phone I just transferred an mp3 via bluetooth and it was done.  here it seems like I need to convert and use itunes and stuff.

Been reading how great the IQ is of the camera itself. It won't perform miracles in low light but you'll get files that stand up to the big boys in good light...

Steve Huff: Just for fun! The iPhone 4s vs the NEX-7 and Fuji X100
http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2011/10/15/just-for-fun-the-iphone-4s-vs-the-nex-7-and-fuji-x100/

Its getting to a point where the convergence of camera and phone may relegate the dedicated stills camera space to more of a pure hobbyist area instead of those who just dabble (less so than hobbyists). Gonna see the death of Point and Shoots in a couple of years or a large reduction in the myriad of models that get released by all the camera companies under the sun.

Another way to look at it is that they should compliment eachother. Having the iPhone (or any smartphone, really) in my pocket constantly that can take photos that are good at websize resolutions and print size is only a good thing. I'll have something like the Sony NEX when I need the control or the use of my lovely lenses. I'd love to see a phone though that really goes balls deep in the photography/videography side. Large CMOS sensor, a practical lens system. Though I'm sure this would really compromise the size of the camera itself.

I think Sony was trying to carve out a camera-phone niche once upon a time.  My old phone from half a decade ago is cybershot branded.  A whopping 2 megapixels must have been hot at the time.

It would be crazy if they end up converging their phones, handheld system and cameras in one super phone a couple of years down the line. The Sony NEX series already has a cellphone with lens mount form factor. Factoring in the lens mount would make it a chunky smartphone though.

But thinking realistically something like that would never happen. I'm sure Sony loves being able to make money off of separate devices instead of consolidating them into one super device.

Is there any mechanism for Siri to keep continually updating itself apart from big official revisions? Like they can just keep continually feeding it new material as it gets stumped and some of it's responses get stale?

Is there any mechanism for Siri to keep continually updating itself apart from big official revisions? Like they can just keep continually feeding it new material as it gets stumped and some of it's responses get stale?

I think Siri contacts a server for every response.  Like, the night this thing was released, I kept trying to show Siri to a friend and it kept giving me a 'server busy' message.  So yeah, if you use it on your 3G connection, it dips into you data plan.  I'm assuming any updates to the responses can be done on the server end.

the more I use siri the cooler I think it is.  it's amazing to try a command and have it actually work.  Last night I said "set alarm for 6:20" and it did.  later I decided to sleep more, so I just said "cancel alarm" and it goes "alarm for 6:20 is turned off."

it's like science fiction [/tight pants]

How long does the battery last?

I'd heard that battery life was one of the main advantages the iphone series had over most androids. My android phone basically has to be recharged every day. It'll go 36 hours max, but that's pushing it.

Right now I'm at 30% and I'm waiting for it to drain completely before my next charge.  I last charged it early Monday and haven't been doing any heavy app usage with it.  When I do, I can pretty much count the battery percent dropping.  I'm hoping it gets better off a fresh charge.

I heard that you can't turn off 3G on 4S, is that true? ???

there's an option under 'Network' called 'Cellular Data'; it says "Turn off cellular data to restrict all data to Wi-Fi, including email, web browsing, and push notifications."  Is that the same thing?

No, in previous phones you had a separate 3G toggle. Turning that off would restrict you to using Edge, thus greatly limiting battery consumption. Now they're forcing you either to use 3G or cut you out of your data connections completely. No push, no nothing.

It's still better than nothing if you want to squeeze a couple hours or  more out of a full charge, I guess.

I read it has something to do with the 4S being a GSM/CDMA phone.

So, I got my 4S with AU.  Can't really tell if the reception is much better than SB, for the most part it's been pretty consistent although I went into some underground areas and my 3G connection was kind of shaky.  Ah well, guess it can't be helped.  Was able to port my number and sign up for an AU email account, although a lot of features like Facetime won't be working until January or something.  I doubt I'll care.  Siri's voice recognition is pretty damn impressive although she's pretty useless in Japan.  She can seem to understand Japanese names if they're in my phone book as romanji, but can't understand kanji, which I guess is kind of understandable.  Her mail writing abilities are also pretty good, I told her to send a mail to my friend, the subject and message contents that I said were pretty damn accurate.

Holy shit people weren't kidding when they said the battery life sucks, seems like I'll be lucky if it lasts a full day.  Enjoying the phone overall tho.  TuneIn radio is awesome, I'm actually able to listen to my local stations back home.  Trying to figure out good apps to get now.

Now I feel like a proper foreigner here!  Heh, seemed like I was the only person without a damn iPhone.

You guys think the Applecare shit is worth getting?  The AU guy said that it's probably unnecessary and I bought a case for the thing...

can you get applecare after the fact? I didn't bother getting it at the store

also, this might be my favorite apple product I've owned because I don't need itunes for most of it's applications.  whenever I decide to use it as an mp3 player, I'll dig out my old laptop and infect that.  for now I'm happy I can get by without it.

and yes, the the battery life is worse than I thought.  I heard to let it drain completely and a fresh charge will help, but nope.  with the lightest usage (no games or videos) it lasted about two days.  it's not a fair comparison because my old phone couldn't do most of what my iphone can, but even after five years I'd only charge it once every four or five days, and that includes time spent playing Tetris, Bookworm and Puzzle Quests.

I just plug it in each night next to my bed, that I way I usually don't run into battery issues.

And sorry to burst your bubble linkzeldaganon, but as soon as you want to sync and back up your shit, including your apps, iTunes is pretty much a must.
