Rockstar is porting 2001 mega-hit Grand Theft Auto 3 to mobile devices.

The launch is part of the 10th anniversary of the groundbreaking sandbox action game, set for 22nd October 2011.

Grand Theft Auto 3 is down for "select new generation iOS and Android devices" this autumn.

The list of supported devices in full:

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S.
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2.
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

"Grand Theft Auto III showed us the potential of open world games," said Rockstar founder Sam Houser.

"It helped set the vision for the company, and we have been expanding on those possibilities with every game ever since."

Quote
As part of the anniversary, Rockstar has relaunched the Rockstar Warehouse, where special anniversary edition items will be available for purchase throughout October.

Included is a limited edition 1:6 scale action figure of Grand Theft Auto III lead character Claude. He has a bat, knife, grenades, pistol, sniper rifle and assault rifle. It goes on sale on 20th October.

Some games don't even run well on iPad 2. Like Back to the Future.

Well Smart Phone/Tablet gaming is the main market for portable gaming now.

Vita won't be out for the 10th year anniversary and Apple/Android basically murdered the 3DS, nowhere else to really put this.

iOS/Android are capable of PS2/PC ports so this is just quick easy money for them.

This is hilarious.  He can't do anything right because of the controls.

:lol at the part where he has to get the car to stop so he can hit the carjack button then when he gets in he can't find the drive button fast enough so he gets thrown back out  :lol

it's funny to think about all the mechanics absent in GTA3.  some of them are so bizarre now.  like, you had to come to a complete stop to get out of the car.  jumping out of a moving vehicle wasn't in until Vice City.  GTA3 also had a birds eye view ala GTA1/2 and I'm pretty sure you could play the entire game that way.

also funny how indoor areas are still rare in GTA4.  GTA3 was all outdoors, Vice City had a few areas, I think San Andreas actually had fewer indoor areas than VC, and GTA4 really limited indoor areas to a handful of buildings.  Of all open world games the Mafia series has the best and most detailed indoor locations, but it's still limited to a few buildings.  I wonder if any open world game will attempt to create a complete city.

Can't pop tires, can't fall into water without dying, can't shoot people through windshields

I briefly threw in GTA 3 when I was going through my old PS2 stuff not too long ago and it has indeed aged like poop. Pretty saddening when I think about how much I loved it back then.

But yeah, this looks like a disaster

Hell, you can't even rotate the camera around the car; there's LT/RT for right- and left-view, and a rear-view, but when driving the car, R-stick manipulation does nothing. After playing anything later, it feels like your neck is in a neckbrace.

I wonder if any open world game will attempt to create a complete city.
Probably not; it represents a tremendous amount of effort for relatively little return in gameplay. Even if it were managed through procedural generation, you're still looking at a huge portion of effort on someone's part to make sure all the unused scenery doesn't break anything in the game.

I've spoken with people who played GTA3 and still thought that they could enter any building; they had been successfully manipulated into not noticing they are only able to enter a very select few buildings.

I don't know that you're right about GTA4, actually. There are a LOT of interiors which only appear in cutscenes. Playable interiors, it had, what...? Each of Niko's safe houses, all date spots like bars and strip clubs, Ammu-Nations, portside warehouse where his cousin was held, industrial slum/ghetto building which Niko could invade by frontal assault or sewer entrance, industrial factory (though it was just for sniper spot to an outdoor position), and several apartment buildings -- one while tailing a target, and another where Niko escapes a narc bust. That's off the top of my head, there may be more.

That's a LOT more than San Andreas or Vice City had, by my count.

Gta3 has aged fine. I played it on pc earlier this year and it's still great. Ps2 version sucks though I'll say that much. I don't think any of the stuff mentioned so far are actually flaws though. Sure you can't shoot through windows but it's not like that's really ever necessary. It's like going back to Sonic 1 and saying it's worse due to the lack of spin dash.

Because ultimately, gta3 still has the best mission design (Sayonara Salvatore, Waka Gashira Wipeout, Bomb Da Base, Grand Theft Auto, Espresso 2 Go) and city layout. The fact I remember almost every mission name without looking them up says something.

yeah, GTA4 has more smaller and detailed indoor spaces than vice city.  the largest place was probably the museum.  Vice city still had the mall, airport, the mansion, bank (also in 4), the club, etc.  but it was probably my expectations for a next gen gta game that I thought there would be more.

The museum! I can't believe I forgot the museum, since it featured heavily in the main game and both DLC installments. Wow.

The bank, I am not super surprised. There was more going on in the Saints Row 2 bank job mission than in GTA4's. I only remember there was a cutscene, and then running into the street.

saint's row series has been good with indoor spaces

SR2 has you parachuting inside a burning building, fighting through a courthouse, a prison, an underground hobo next, an asian restaurant.  it also had a mall.  SR3 looks even crazier.

No, I listed that: that's "portside warehouse where his cousin was held" - there are plenty of places in GTA4, I just think SR2 had more.

The Kal-El tablet also brought out another surprise: A wired Xbox 360 controller used to control the game via the device’s USB port. That’s right: GTA3‘s mobile release will support USB controllers on devices that can handle it. Apple’s tablets and smartphones won’t officially support the feature since they have no USB port, though Rockstar admits that such functionality isn’t out of the question with the help of a Camera Connection Kit.

And yes, since you’re probably wondering: It would be a “technical challenge” to deliver mobile ports of Vice City and San Andreas, but it is “very possible.”

that's pretty awesome, maybe stuff like this will kick apple in the ass to officially support usb devices through the connection kit
