I was just reading about this phenomenon on TVtropes.com -- "old shame"? So apparently legitimate manga-ka who are just starting out will make their doujin works sexy in nature in order to grab readers, but really they want to tell a story? The story turns out to be good, so eventually it has the opportunity to turn into an anime, but with the sex removed?

Is that what happened here?

Japan's really got the lock on this sort of thing. There are quite a few manga artists that started out doing adult comics and quite a few TV series started out as adult visual novels. It's crazy.

At the start of the game, the player may choose to play as either a male or female character, as well as selecting one of three Servants — Saber, Archer, or Caster, each with different strengths and weaknesses. Players spend one ingame "week" interacting with other characters, viewing scenes that advance the game's story, talking to their Servant in their room, and gathering clues to the identity of the enemy Servant. At the end of each day, they enter the Arena, a dungeon in which they can battle monsters to gain experience points and strengthen their Servant. Servants' stats are raised manually using skill points gained upon levelling up. At the end of each week is a decisive battle against the enemy Servant and Master, after which the player progresses to the next round of the tournament-style war.

The game's turn-based battle system is comparable to rock-paper-scissors -- "Attack" overpowers "Break", Break overpowers "Guard", and Guard overpowers Attack. During battle, both the player and the opponent line up six such moves at the beginning of each turn. Landing three successful hits allows use of an "extra attack" that cannot be countered. Most types of enemies have their own distinctive attack patterns, and memorizing these allows the player Servant to deal high amounts of damage while receiving minimal damage in return.

Sounds utterly boring. And it's only rated "T", so...

Not really, since Type-Moon already had a successful series (Tsukihime) prior to Fate. They're just an eroge developer. That's what they do.

well i know the number of people that gives a fuck about this game here are between -1 and 0 but writing pointless impressions of game nobody plays is what i do...

so where to begins, this game is wordy, like metroid other m pointless wordy... if you played the actual novel thing (basicaly if you are called viz or you are me i guess) it's really not that far from it,the intro alone takes like 30 minutes full of monologue and pointless rambling, tough it settles to normal level when the actual game kicks in

the combat is at least original, basicaly each combat turn you and the enemy have to pick 6 action between attack, break or guard,it's basicaly rock/paper/scissor... attack beats break, break beat guard and guard beat attack, the thing is that each enemy follows a determinate pattern so for example there are defensive enemies that spend most of their action picking guard or there is a beast like enemy that always pick 2 of each actions in a A-B-C-A-B-C pattern

the game also tells you out straight 1 or 2 of their actions,so for example the game might tell you that the beast enemy is using his first action to attack, knowing this you can assume his 4th action will also be used to attack and that his 2nd and 3rd (5th and 6th) action will be either guarding-breaking or breaking-guarding and therefore act accordingly

the plot... each character gets the aid of an historical figure with super powers called servant and they have to beat each other with it until THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE,the game is divided in week and in each week you are supposed to play detective and gets more info on your opponent so you can learn about their life as an historic figure and therefore learning their special attacks and stuff... the more you learn, the more the game tells you about their action when the time for the boss fight come's around

the dungeon itself are super-bland affairs of futuristic looking cube's,the interface looks really similiar to persona 3 up to your servant making quips after every battle and going "LEVEL APPU!" but other than that there is no similiarity with persona at all and uh... that's pretty much all i have to say about it

it's not terribad but it's also totaly skippable if you don't give a fuck about the source material in the first place
here's a review which i think sums it pretty nice

Memorizing enemy attack patterns sounds like just about the least amount of fun you could have with a videogame.

well you don't usualy see rock/paper/scissor in an rpg,it's always "WATER BEATS FIRE" and "ATTACK,ITEM,MAGIC,DEFEND"

anyway i'm pretty sure there is a crowd that can appreciate one of the enemy you meet later on

i only played the first week but the pattern were really simple to memorize and beside as i said the game tells you between 1 and 3 actions of your enemy so you can reconduce the pattern from the info the game give you

anyway i was checking the character profile out of curiosity and i stumbled upon this

yep it's cannibalistic ronald mcdonald, and that's what make japanese games worth playing :smug
