$7 for Endless Legend is worth it alone

Tell me about Endless Legend. Why are these games worth playing?

I haven't played Endless Space but Endless Legend is a great turn based fantasy game with interesting (yet skippable) combat.

I have most of the games on PC, but I still bought it so I can play it downstairs (muh big comfy couch :doge).

Sadly all the games are in one key so you can't give away spares.

I had this game on one of those 10-in-1 CD-ROM packs back in the day.

My 2nd company in game development had a Silicon Graphics "lab" with 6 employees. Their machines cost like US$15K-20K each, and the artists were paid a pretty penny as well. No-one knew what they were doing. At least two of them were mainly there because they knew how to operate the UI and were competent at UNIX. I think they were finally applied to creating an opening cinematic for one of our games. Just having the crew and SG machines was a point of pride for our CEO, but no-one was ever able to leverage them meaningfully.

To this day, I hold a grudge against overly specific proprietary hardware.

In my research into the various things related to the Ultra 64, I've been digging into a bit of SGI stuff of that era. And that sounds like a whole bunch of stories I've come across, including in stuff like Game Developer Magazine.

The UI/UNIX thing was apparently a huge factor in these "labs" everybody setup that created a huge bottleneck with a basically impervious division/department. Especially after DKC, which was Rare futzing around with a SGI machine they'd been sent to get ready for N64, then realizing "oh shit, we can just turn these into sprites" and use them in current games if they compressed enough.

One common theme was artists doing the basics on regular hardware, then handing it to the Silicon Graphics Guy who would setup the box to run the renders overnight. Most of the slowly becoming middleware render packages didn't even need something like SGI's machines, they ran on regular boxes. Doom engine, Build engine, BRender, etc.

There are similar interviews from around the same era where developers are asked "so what part of CD's UNLIMITED SPACE did you take advantage of?" And they're like "I dunno...music?" And then you find the reviews a few months later and they say "basically the same as the Genesis version but has better quality music, also the commercial is included as the intro video." Mortal Kombat on the Sega CD being the Genesis version with the MORTAAAAAAALLLLLLLL KOMBAT ad stuck at the start of the game, unedited, so it showed the SNES version and hardware. (Plus loading times for half the stuff in the game.) :lol

One thing you did need that SGI hardware for were Nintendo's pre-hardware emulators for the N64 though. Part of the "Dream Team" was Nintendo covering the costs on those boxes.

My story was from that era, but I'd bet money that our SG lab was not a part of getting a jump on N64.

Hamilton's Great Adventure was a puzzle adventure game I loved a few years back. It's by the Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 team.

Definitely some solid picks on there. Rage 1 is a classic imo fuck the haters, Flame and the Flood had some hype. I gotta check my steam library when I get home and see if there's a few things on here I don't own already.

ya Hamilton's is def pretty sweet puzzle game

Enforcer: Police Crime Action is some exciting police jank with totally busted physics that the devs abandoned after everyone on YouTube made fun of it and are releasing the "patch" as some other game that's in Early Access under an entirely new company name

CTU: Counter Terrorism Unit is also from them but doesn't have any of the open world stupidity fun, is just like SWAT 4 or whatever in oddly similar looking maps* except totally busted and crap, Enforcer is definitely the one to buy for hot REAL police ACTION

They got real jobs in the industry and are on like a nine hour time difference now, one of them works at CCP I think. They had mentioned before that the "We Broke" series apparently is actually pretty time consuming because of how many problems a lot of the games have that getting them to operate to where they can make videos out of them sometimes are harder than getting the games to do stupid things.

So it's an instance of where they don't want to play jank garbage to see how bad it can get with their more limited time of having lined up schedules. I guess they do streams regularly but it's often of "quality" games and legit playing them.

Not surprised: Too many "we broke" and not enough Battlefield/general comedy videos which is what actually put them on the map.

They often do a pretty decent job, especially of doing ones with stuff that hasn't been bundled before or at least doing it at a new low price. Unlike GMG which does a lot of rehashing in theirs.

Their sales aren't too bad either, even preordered some stuff through them the last couple years because of the deals.

Them and Humble are the only stores that still allow stacking really.

So there's no reason to get the Beamdog enhanced versions of Infinity Engine rpgs if I have the gog versions right? Aren't the originals with patches basically the same thing and Beamdog ones just have their own issues?
