Kitase played up the importance of Hope, who's appeared grown up in all the screens we've seen so far. Serah and newcomer Noel are the main characters, he reiterated. While the characters from the original will appear in the game in some capacity, Hope is of particular importance to the story as his role connects to the theme of "prayer for regeneration/rebirth."

Awesome, when I want to relax with a game at the end of a long week, I always ask myself "how does this game embody the core themes of prayer for regeneration/rebirth"

http://www.next-gen.biz/news/final-fantasy-xv-could-be-action-rpg

Quote
Yoshinori Kitase, producer of Final Fantasy XIII-2, has hinted that the next iteration of Final Fantasy could see it drift away from its turn-based roots and be an action-RPG.

In an interview, Kitane told us that the increasing popularity of action-RPGs compared to their turn-based equivalents represented "a trend…you ignore at your peril."

"I think the nature of the franchise is to present something new each time," Kitase said. "In the global market we see many players moving away from games that used turn-based systems toward what you might term an action-RPG.

"That's a trend, and you ignore things like that at your peril."

Kitase went on to say that changes introduced in Final Fantasy XIII showed that the series was moving forward with each iteration - but left the door wide open for more subtantial changes to be made in the next full game in the series.

"FFXIII and FFXIII-2's battle systems have those elements of speed and action that are the key words for us, though that doesn't necessarily mean we're going to stick to the same route in our next game," he said. "That's something only time can tell."

Despite its long history as a turn-based RPG, it wouldn’t be too surprising were Square Enix to take the Final Fantasy series in a new direction. While five million copies of 2009's Final Fantasy XIII were shipped worldwide, the online RPG Final Fantasy XIV has had a dismal time of it since its launch in September 2010.

Last December, Square Enix announced a delay to the PS3 version of the game following the PC release's dismal reception. CEO Yoichi Wada offered the company's "sincerest apologies"; producer Hiromichi Tanaka stood down, and was replaced by Naoki Yoshida; the dev team was reshuffled; and the free trial period was extended indefinitely.

In September, Wada conceded: "The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged," and confirmed that the team was "basically fully redoing the game." Further evidence that the publisher recognises the need for change came from senior executive officer Koji Taguchi, who said in June that Square Enix's "decline in Japanese titles [shown at E3] was almost humiliating." Just one game of Japanese origin was shown at the conference: Final Fantasy XIII-2.

I was just reading the GAF thread about that interview (or rather, the article paraphrasing the interview) and, wtf? All I get from the actual quoted portions is

* RPGs becoming more action-heavy is an important trend
* XIII and XIII-2 follow that trend
* But future games won't necessarily continue in that direction

Everything else, and especially the mention of XV in the headline, seems to be ham-handed editorializing from the writer. Or at least there's no indication otherwise - it would be nice to at least know what the actual question was.

Also WTF do a botched MMO dev process/launch and the low quantity of HD games from SE Japan have to do with whether the next FF is turn-based or not?

I just finished reading that thread, and in all four pages nobody ever seems to notice that the content of the article doesn't actually back up the sensationalistic headline at all. Why does seemingly nobody ever check anything?

Full interview will probably be published in the Edge magazine...i think

Kagari seems to know
Quote
I wasn't going to post this because I think the question itself is terrible... so here's my thoughts instead:

Asking about a game that's not even announced is fairly rude and shows you don't care about games the developers are actually working on. Final Fantasy Versus XIII and XIV relaunch haven't even happened yet, so if anything, these journalists need to stop prodding about things that don't even exist.

Yes, I realize the irony in that I myself have done interviews with the FF development staff, but I would never ask them something this dumb.

In short, stop prodding about non-existent things.

kagari probably shouldn't be preaching on what is or isn't right practice for games journos given she's in a constant state of dribbling secrets she's not supposed to.

there's nothing wrong with asking about the next numbered installment in an extremely popular series even if it's not announced yet.  if you spend your whole interview harping on it, then yes, that is a problem, but asking questions that your readers would want to ask isn't bad or unprofessional, it's the fucking job.

But we don't even know what the question was! Did they even ask about the next numbered installment in the first place, or was it just a general question about the trend towards actioniness as seen in XIII or XIII-2? There's no evidence either way in the article.

The Final Fantasy franchise finds itself in quite a different place than during its hey day on Playstation. Has the series failed to meet the expectations of today's market and can something be done to bring it back to the height of its popularity?

The current generation console, Final Fantasy XIII, was obviously the first game, and personally I think we took a little too long getting it out. When you think of Western triple A titles like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Assassin's Creed, they seem to work with a lot shorter turnaround - they make a new game in 1-2 years. That is something we need to follow up, because that seems to be the best way to keep our fans interested and attracted to the franchise.

With Final Fantasy XIII we took a long time to complete it, so we learnt a lesson. We were determined to produce Final Fantasy XIII-2 in a short time, actual development took about 1,5 years. And we'll be able to make it available to western fans less than two years after the release of Final Fantasy XIII. Which is okay.

I don't think the FF brand has lost a lot of its popularity -- FFXIII sold 6 million copies, which is on par for the post-PS1-era FF games, and better than FFXII's numbers. I hope FFXIII-2 does well, it's certainly rectifying a lot of the first game's issues.

i don't know a lot about this game, but when i see trailers and screens, i see shitloads of menu boxes, item found indicators, npcs, interaction, and just shit everywhere on the screen whether it's in battle or out.  To me, this indicates an improvement over boring ass XIII.  It looks like they're stuffing it full of stuff to do and realizing XIII had a serious lack of content.
