There's no need to backpedal. It'll likely be a good game, and there hasn't been enough shown to get reasonably hyped for, and with Saints Row the Third on the horizon, there's not much to care either.

Fairly quick? It doesn't get truly tedious until well into the McReary family missions and nosedives in the mafia storyline.

The Elizabeta, Playboy, Dwayne, UL Paper, Francis and Packie McReary missions were all gold. GTAIV's problem is mostly the tail end of the story mode and the incessant clingy crap from your "friends", problems which GTAIV's expansions, TLAD and BGOT fix.

So by your argument, GTAIV's expansions aren't good? Because they are.

I thought the first few hours of GTA4 were the best (sans DLC) 

Most of the missions were low-key.  Because it was small and dense, you didn't need to drive much.  Mission were simple and varied, even if most were dull chores.  Game started getting worse when you hit Bohan.  Then in Manhattan it just got to be a pain in the ass.  Lots of driving, more shootin, more action.  No checkpoints, bad combat, bad driving, and all that stuff suddenly felt a whole lot worse when the map was larger.  It's also when I realized that for a detailed and lively world, there really isn't anything to do.  Um, you can shoot pigeons.

Mostly why I'm excited for GTAV is because the DLCs were a lot better than the main game.  I liked Lost and Damned a lot.

I played Lost and the Damned a bit [5-6 hours maybe, don't remember exactly], but I remember really quick why I ended up disliking vanilla GTAIV and LatD didn't do a whole lot to fix those things.

Try out Ballad of Gay Tony then. It's more "whacky" than GTAIV and TLAD. Personally, I'm not too fond of Gay Tony because you go on silly missions and while that's great and all, it creates a disconnect because the world of GTAIV is anything but colorful and enjoyable.

Sorry, I played maybe 7 hours of GTAIV and I was never entertained, and most of the time I was simply annoyed.  Easily the most overhyped game of the forever.

I actually started liking the game, driving around the city and doing the missions. But somewhere along the way my excitement faded and just kept fading and fading. By the time I got to the end, I just left with a sour taste in my mouth at the whole affair and I'm going to be doubly wary of GTAV.
