What kind of offer would make you do a job you hate, at a company you despise, in a city where you outlived your stay?

Would you give up your ideals for a raise of 75%? Let's say for a year.

The vast mass of humanity would do that for a raise of 1% a year, I think

I was offered € 500 a month extra for a job at a company I don't really like, for an OK job. Also 1,5 hour less travel a day.

I said no!

Yeah, my pay is good as it is now, and at my current job I feel like I'm building something and there's growth ahead, which is a cool feeling.

I did surprise myself with how easily I said no though, I just shot him down on the phone the moment he offered it.

To give up some? 25-30% probably. All of them? 50-60% I guess. I don't have to do it forever do I?

Only thing I'd never do is work for a tobacco company.

It was a big-time guy who made 500,000/cash/week at that time. And he's now dead.

That's nice.  No matter how much he made, you only pay as much as you have to for such services.  I don't see him offering you that sort of money when he could hire any ex-special forces operator for a tenth of that.

(what's his name?)

no, its true!  he's a millionaire who hangs out in the backwoods of kentucky and hires kids who hang out on the internets to be his personal bodyguards to fight off the swarms of hillbillies that are out for his monies

oh wait, he's dead!  if only he would have offered a more reasonable salary, t234 could have been there to save him

Well to be fair most people making that kind of dirty money do wind up dead. And if you don't have a good laundering operation having that much cash eventually becomes useless so I could see someone paying ridiculous amounts for things like security in cash they can't personally make liquid. *shrug*

I choose to give Thor benefit of doubt because stranger things have happened. I just wouldn't post about it on the internet, personally.

Of course you could see it.

We've already established that you're ridiculously gullible.

Alternative protective setup:

Hire 12 ex-military Iraq/Afghanistan vets at $80,000/year.  (with the current employment situation in the US, this is a more than reasonable prospect, I believe)

Break them up into four watches of 3.

You now have full protection 24/7 by 3 trained bodyguards following you around, who are always alert and rested due to the rotating shifts.  All this for  $960k a year.  That's a $340,000/year savings over the Thor Plan, and the deterrence value is upped (the visual of 3 armed bodyguards vs. 1), and you get more value with the quality of coverage. (because, let's face it, off-hours, Thor is going to be high as fuck.)

No really, fuck you. Everyone finds your page long responses to be a fucking joke and you still never replied to me in response to the legalization debate we were having. So, fuck you.

See, now I'm confused:

"Fuck you, everyone finds your page-long responses to be a fucking joke"

"Fuck you, you never gave me a page-long response in that one legalization thread"

I grew up a working class American so that means I have few ideals to abandon when it comes to working.  I worked so many shit jobs that working in a somewhat pressure cooker white collar environment in a town I can barely tolerate is several steps up from menial factory work or mopping up shit in the women's restroom for minimum wage.

In fact, most people work at a job they hate at a city that they despise but it is either live up to ideals or eat with a roof over their head.

A fair answer, reading it makes me feel like beloning to the 1% or something. Although in my case it's prob the 1% really dumb people, not the rich.

I guess I'm just saying that I have few ideals when it comes to working and I can tolerate a little shit if it means not cleaning it up in a foul smelling bathroom for the rest of my life.

I've been doing jobs outside my main interest for the last 7 years. Having my family living exactly where they wanted to be, it's allowed me to be very patient, though it has felt like my career has been on hold.

On the other hand, I'm about to be out of work because I refused to move my family to another city. So I guess it all gets down to family; I'm working for my family ideals, while I've had to abandon my career ideals for a while.

No really, fuck you. Everyone finds your page long responses to be a fucking joke and you still never replied to me in response to the legalization debate we were having. So, fuck you.

You're taking the internet too seriously right now bro.

You're correct, of course.

But yes my new policy is if you're a dick, fuck you. Because, hey, that's what we do right?

Well, not really. There should be some effort at cleverness, even if it falls on its face. "Fuck you" is such a lowest-common-denominator bit of non-smackdown.

Personally my policy, which so far I've been able to maintain, is to never take a job that isn't a significant step up from my previous jobs in BOTH pay and how much I like / am interested in the work. But I've been pretty lucky, maybe someday my luck will run out and I'll have to accept a downgrade in one or the other or both. (I also don't have a family or real obligations, which has let me be pickier)

I sort of doubt that taking a job you hate is likely to help you and your career in the long run though - your hatred for the work will probably just make you suck at it, and close you off from any adjacent opportunities.
