IIRC, both guides tell you to piss off and go to town by yourself.  I found the stones later on my own as well.

If you separated from the person you escaped with as soon as you got out of the caves, you might miss it, but if you stay with them they show you the first three stones and tell you to touch one.

Lol I just totally ditched that guy. Later on I watched my dad play through it and the guy was showing him the stones and I was like HEY WHAT THE FUCK

the guy (well the imperial guy at least) actually gives you incentive to let him go on ahead of you, he says something like "if i get to town first i'll put in a good word for you"

on a side note i've noticed the 3d rendering of loot (specifically the leather shield) has lost all of it's detail.  i deleted 100 or so saves and it's still happening, shame, since it was that object that first wowed me with it's level of detail.

Riften is my next destination, and then I might do the main quest a bit, and then winterhold.  I've only done parts of whiterun, windhelm, and solitude.  I planned to be in Riften two (real) days ago but got sidetracked by some random stuff.

Personally I mix it up a bit. I do a ton of the sidestuff. And then a main quest. Then tons more of the side stuff. And then another main quest. I don't like actively ignoring it just to ignore it but then I also want to complete all the different guild quests before I finish the main quest.

But everybody is going to play it differently. I'm not one of those people who likes to enter random dungeons I run across in the world. I like to have a quest before I enter a dungeon (and fortunately there are tons of quests that lead you into dungeons). But once again that's my little weird quirk. The main reason so far I would think to do a few main quests is that you don't have the ability to do dragon shouts at all without doing at least the early stuff.

If I had to guess, probably the main quest gets you more shouts and shit which are useful in all of the sidequests.  I'm just speculating, I haven't done much in the main quest.

well for one, it's the best single questline in the game. second, it takes you to all the important places in the game. third, it nets you a lot of shouts.

so when you're done with it, you can easily warp around the world doing side quests.

obviously if you've already been around the game doing side quests than it doesnt matter. but if you just start out, you should play the main quest first.

it's so awesome tagging some schmuck who's on a tower talking shit to me, then watching him fall nearby for convenient looting, then seeing that the arrow i shot went straight up his fucking nostril

90 hours in and I've only been to Whiterun, Markarth and Winterhold.  I spent 200 hours in Oblivion including DLC and I just can't see myself being anywhere near 'finished' with Skyrim in that time.

I finally made it to Riften after a week (of real time) of wrapping up loose ends.  The best part was when I close enough to see the gates, some jerkoff courier runs up and hands me a letter from Solitude saying I had to go back  :-\

also had a kickass four way fight between me, a dragon, five trolls, and some hunters.  I didn't even notice the hunters, but post fight I was picking up my quality arrows and saw some iron ones scattered about.  I searched around and found a camp on a ridge with a dead body.  That explains why the dragon was acting weird and not attacking me.

Finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and I mean that in a good way. I only really need to complete the Blades questline, the Main plotline, and the imperial plotline although I still have a good ways to go on all of those.

I play these kind of games crazy slow paced but I'm already at 120 hours.

I'm so annoyed by Dragons at this point. They are more like pests since I've way too powerful for them. I tend to run away from Dragon fights now simply because I can't carry the bones and scales.

I think remember Todd Howard comparing the dragons to the big daddies from Bioshock.  He meant it in one way, but it works in another.  The progression of both started as these powerful presences and midway through the game became busywork.

I'm 45 hours or so in, which isn't much judging from my steam friends list numbers hitting double to triple that.  Still really enjoying it but at times it can feel like a slog.  I usually don't juggle single player games but I might end up starting something else and playing less of this.  Also realizing that I might be more interested in the Fallout universe than Elder Scrolls.

and random thought: a game that mixes freelancer's casual space flight and small planetary, satellite, or station 'ground' hubs set in a galaxy would be a cool third series.  Something that's more science fiction and alien than the fantasy of Elder Scrolls or post apocalyptic of Fallout.  I can't think of a game that delivers a space jockey moment.

I definitely prefer post apocalypse to Tolkien wanna be. Which is not to knock Skyrim as I think they do a good job with the lore of the world. I just think Skyrim is a deeper and more in depth world. I'm sure the next Fallout will benefit from what they've learned here.

The Dragons are a tricky situation. At first they are awe inspiring. But after you've killed so many and powered up some much they just become a yawn. Especially since they really function as unlocks for the Dragon Shouts.  Definitely a flaw although obviously I still think its an amazing game.

I've said it before but the best compliment I can give Skyrim is that it makes me want to go back and play Oblivion and Morrowind just to jump into a fresh world like this. And I played both of those games a bit before and quit them. But now I feel like I wouldn't.

up the difficulty

fuck that, the combat in this game is bullshit and its all just smashing stats together. Upping difficulty simply means chugging more potions.

Which is why I put most of my shit into Archery and just hide in the shadows and snipe. It's better that way.

I really like this game but it doesn't have shit on Dark Souls. Skyrim has an amazing world and a crazy amount of great content, but the fighting is lame and the whole game is short on genuine thrills. Dark Souls is more engrossing, and has an elegant, wonderfully designed combat system. As well as the most excitement I've had in a game in a long time.

Also, Skyrim isn't GOTY as so many people say. It isn't even top 3. Batman, Dark Souls, and Deus Ex are all better games

I love Skyrim but bumping up the difficulty won't fix the issue of the dragons. The problem is the amount of dragons. I've literally killed a dragon and then had another appear within a minute at the same location. There are just too many of them for random encounters. If they were going to go that route that should have had a lot more variability.

this game goes "go to Winterhold" and I go.  I get there, talk to one guy and all he says is "go to Markarth."

I hate that.  It's like they designed the objectives for the video game-y quick travel mechanic instead of something that might exist in the world.  This happens too frequently.  Dragonborn should be like, fuck this shit, I'm doing this for a reward that's probably junk because I'm already superslammin dragons in my underwear.  It could be better designed to make sense in the world.  I'm supposed to see a wizard or something, right? there's a wizard school in winterhold! it would make sense that way.

anyway, Winterhold is a shithole.  The New Jersey of Skyrim.

It's weird that the "main quest" in Skyrim doesn't feel any more imperative than the other quests. Like is some shadow society fighting with some other shadow society more important than a civil war about to break out and cause a split in my character's allegiance? There's a cult rebellion in one city that has lead me to more danger than the dragons have.

Just realised you can't take the light armor perks then go straight from Dragon Armor to the Daedric perk, so I have to get all the heavy armor perks for the best weapons. Damned inconsistent UI led me to believe it would be fine  >:(

At this point further upgrades are probably fairly pointless, just OCD driving my character progression atm. About to tackle Alduin then get back to side questin
