I downloaded the high rez texture update but I didn't have a chance to get into the game. How bad a framerate hit should I expect?

Man, I forgot how badass I was at the end of the game. I booted it up yesterday to see the hi-rez textures and space core, and went to a few caves and just completely mangled some bandits and then I killed a giant and a whole mammoth herd and barely got scratched.

The workshop also automatically downloads the latest version of a subscribed mod if you don't have it. Hopefully this kind of community integration becomes even more widespread.

I didn't notice any performance problems, mostly because the last time I put time into Skyrim was before 1.4 and the performance boost that came with it.  I only checked out Whiterun, though.  The Reach was the place that killed performance before.

PC peoples, the official High Res texture pack is released on steam (3 gigs) along with the creation kit.

pics dont seem to show much difference, I wonder if the mods are still better?

there were a few pics i saw on gaf that seemed a significant improvement. shield textures, wood textures on poles, etc.
it seems it's a whole lot of general texture improvements instead of a smaller number of huge improvements that the mods give you.

It's an improvement over the original textures for sure, but still not great.  The original textures were just that bad.  I'm guessing expectations were a lot higher.

looks NICE, but also maybe not that big

also reposted:

hey guys skyrim on master difficulty is REALLY FUCKING HARD.

i love playing on the hardest difficulty in open-world wrpgs because the progression feels so awesome.  in the beginning you're so weak that a fight with a regular animal is tough and any fight with a basic human is life-or-death; anything stronger than that and you better start running.  you build up skills and levels an slowly you can eke out a victory from tougher and tougher monsters.  by the end of the game you're powerful as fuck but the strongest monsters can still crush you if you don't prepare.

HOWEVER

i'm 45 hours into skyrim and still getting my ass beat left and right.  it's a pain in the ass getting through a dungeon only to find that there's even stronger enemies way down in there that you can't get past.  i'm too stubborn to lower the difficulty tho, so it looks like i gotta head back to a town and work on some better crafting and enchantments.

even still this game is fucking amazing.  i swear this is total landscape porn; everywhere i look is beautiful and the effects like the mist rolling off the mountains looks SO DAMN GOOD.  loads of great emergent moments too.  my favorite so far is when the "statue" i walked towards on top of a mountain turned out to be a dragon, and while running like hell from it i stumbled into a conjurer's stronghold and let all of them battle it out while i picked off the stragglers with fireballs and arrows.  this game's gonna suck even more time from me than fallout 3 but I DON'T CARE

Straight from the big man at Bethesda:

Quote
And you mentioned DLC. We would like to do DLC; we don’t have any specific plans yet, but they’ve been really successful and we like making them. So right now I can say that we’d like to do less DLC but bigger ones -- you know, more substantial. The Fallout 3 pace that we did was very chaotic. We did a lot of them -- we had two overlapping groups -- and we don’t know what we’re going to make yet, but we’d like them to be closer to an expansion pack feel.

Bethesda’s started sending out beta invites access to Skyrim’s first DLC content pack, Dawnguard.

Bethesda’s Twitter account confirmed the news.

“With an overwhelming number of applicants, half of one percent received invites,” said Bethesda.

“We look forward to feedback in our private forum.”

The company later tweeted that more than 75% of the invites have now been sent out and that the rest will be released tomorrow.

Skyrim: Dawnguard will release as a timed 360 exclusive on Xbox Live on June 26 and will cost 1,600 MSP. PS3 and PC versions of the DLC will be released at a undisclosed later date.

According to Bethesda, fans can finish Dawnguard somewhere from 15 to 20 hours, depending if you do some exploration or not.

http://www.justpushstart.com/2012/06/e3-2012-skyrim-dawnguard-dlc-game-length-revealed/

Supposedly they're adding some stuff to the regular game world, as well, not included in that length estimate. I can't find the link, but I remember reading Todd Howard talking about a huge dungeon that wasn't part of the Dawnguard storyline.

really? that is a premium DLC price point for XBL. The only other DLCs that cost that much were the GTAIV expansions, and Sivering Isles, afaik.

But, developer claiming 15-20 hours gameplay = <10 hours gameplay...

regardless I'll wait for a sale

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-25-skyrim-expansion-dawnguard-coming-to-xbox-360-tomorrow

Quote
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim's first expansion pack Dawnguard is coming out tomorrow on Xbox 360 for 1600 Microsoft Points, developer Bethesda has announced.

Those with French, Italian, German and Spanish copies of the game won't receive the add-on until mid-July. They will however get the recent version 1.6 update adding mounted combat and Kinect support today.

There's still no word on a Dawnguard release date for the PC and PS3 versions of Skyrim, though we've reached Bethesda for comment and will update as we hear back.

Dawnguard will allow players to go down the path of becoming a Vampire Lord or join the Dawnguard, a band of vampire hunters.

Being a Vampire Lord comes with all sorts of nifty perks like being able to sprout wings and hover, or raise the dead. The catch is that they take damage during the day.

Vampire Hunters, on the other hand, get cool crossbows and can summon trolls to fight for them, but alas, no flying or bat transformations. Boo!

The expansion promises 10 to 20 hours of gameplay.

Time to dust off Skyrim  :hyper

I finally beat the game (meaning the main quest) this weekend in prep for the DLC. I was always close but I never bothered to finish that one off. The main quest and the civil war quest are great in theme but poor in execution. Especially the resolution in both aspects. The civil war one is by far the more disappointing one.

The Dark Brother brother, The thieves guild, and the warrior ones I really liked. The mage guild questline was kinda meh also.

Once Dawnguard is installed (along with the 1.6 title update), players that are level 10 or higher will hear rumors about the Dawnguard from guards in major cities. They may also be approached by a courier who will give them a note about the Dawnguard. Otherwise, if your character is below level 10 or you wish to find the Dawnguard on your own, you can seek out the Dawnguard headquarters roughly east/southeast of Riften. It can be reached by a small cave through the mountains.

Finished the main quest(as a Vampire,around 8 hours),few thoughts

-story is typical Hollywood bullshit(Avengers :yuck),very very very predictable--kill the bad guy, done
-some cool looking locations
-Vampire Lord is very clunky(third person Bethesda lol)
-most locations are like---you..........bunch of enemies...........zzzzzz............bunch of enemies.......zzzzzz.....done
-very easy to get lost, big locations(go in circles)

Is it worth 1600 points?
Nope

I still have few side-quests to finish though.I just feel  this was done by someone that took absolutely no risks.

My advice...wait for some sale or goty edition

It's not bad,just decent.

This is a good review
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-06-27-the-elder-scrolls-5-skyrim-dawnguard-review

Quote
Exhausting all of Dawnguard's goodies took the best part of a day, and it certainly didn't seem like time wasted. Mostly, however, this expansion feels like an excuse to get back into the game as it already existed - and for Bethesda to smuggle in some gameplay updates - rather than a coherent addition with anything new to say.

It's a strange one, then. Apart from the (sadly) expected Bethesda hiccups - erratic quest markers, odd spawn glitches - there's nothing really wrong with Dawnguard. At the same time, there's nothing here that demands 1600 Microsoft Points' worth of attention. If all you want is a solid side quest and some good loot, this will scratch that itch. If you were hoping for something more epic and ambitious, keep waiting.

I'm about 15 hours into Dawnguard and enjoying it.  I sided with the Dawnguard, and it seems many think that's the more interesting side.  I tried the Vampire side for a while but didn't care for the characters and I don't find Vampire Lord particularly interesting (nor do I find the werewolf interesting, didn't before the DLC and still don't).  Even without the alternate forms I'm finding plenty to do.

I'm currently in the Soul Cairn and it's the low point of the DLC thus far - just not well designed.  It's either a case of wandering aimlessly or getting ridiculously, boringly systematic to find eveything.  Even if it were a valley with the path at the bottom that would have been more enjoyable to navigate than the non-descript landscape it currently is.  I don't hate it but once I'm done I'm not coming back.

The new dungeons before the Soul Cairn were kick-ass though, long with interesting set-pieces.  And the other things like the plastic surgeon and dragon weapons are great for someone like me who is still actively playing.

I like it more than what I've done in any of the guild questlines so far (only finished the mages guild, others are part way).

Not really AFAIK.

New caves, new island with a fort, new enclosed regions accessible by a cave or portal, that sort of thing.

I did just come across a cool little link to a character who played a minor but memorable roll in Morrowind, and also had a small mention in Oblivion, that character being:

The quest is lame - I found a lot when just going through exploring but had to use a guide to find the last one.  No quest markers sucks in an area that is so devoid of landmarks.

Just finished up everything in the Soul Cairn.  Definitely the crappiest area in the entire game I've encountered yet.  I know it's supposed to be a sucky place to be, but c'mon.

At least I'm taking a couple of neat perks with me back to Tamriel.

That whole area could have been a lot less bland. I like some of the touches, the floaty things that fly around, the skeletons that kind of disappear in black ooze, the keepers... everything else is very meh.
