New Xbox - Codename Loop - W9
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:38:45 AM »
Prob old but...

Quote
The Xbox is another story altogether. With a heady mix of rumors, tips and speculation, I am now stating that Xbox codename “loop” (the erstwhile XboxTV) will indeed debut a modified Win9 core. It will use a Zune HD-like hardware platform—a  “main” processor with multiple dedicated assistive cores for graphics, AI, physics, sound, networking, encryption and sensors. It will be custom designed by Microsoft and two partners based on the ARM architecture. It will be cheaper than the 360, further enabling Kinect adoption. And it will be far smaller than the 360. It will also demonstrate how Windows Phone could possible implement Win9’s dev platform on the lower end.

I'm afraid this is going to become MS' Wii. But not as successful...

Not going to buy it if Kinect is the main focus.

That sounds like some cheap Xbox TV box.

Dedicated chip for AI? lol

ARM is possible but I feel that IBM is involved again.

Won't will make dev costs go higher than they are now? I don't see that happening in this economy. Still a long time off though.

MS nerd keeps talking

Correct. Secondly, these assistive cores are exactly that, assistive. They exist for the same reason you see dedicated hardware for H.264 decode in cheaper and smaller devices. The "main" processor is general purpose multi-core as well. And MS is directly involved in designing the processor base this time.

(xbox poop= main multicore cpu+bunch of cheap dedicated cores designed for heavy workload duties

xbox phone=main multicore cpu+bunch of cheap dedicated cores designed for heavy workload duties
xbox tablet=main multicore cpu+bunch of cheap dedicated cores designed for heavy workload duties

Gpu scale pretty well,no need for hacks there  )

==high degree of compatibility among various devices

hmm

Also eliminating piracy could lead to less MP focussed games as well, less BS content that keeps people playing.

how about this?

base sku=digital only

premium sku=base sku+dvd/blu-ray accessory

hdd for both,no point in going digital without storage

dvd/blu-ray accessory, higher capacity hdd sold separately(for people that want to upgrade)

Digital releases=day and date with retail

Pricing?
That could be a little bit tricky

But you'd be probably limiting exposure because retailers would shy away from it.

This is all you need. Launching a dedicated home console without an optical drive would be crazy right now.

The pricing of everything next gen will be the most interesting part.

But, on a serious note, I think MP is really less about "Hey, don't pirate our games please" and more about "Yo, dudebros, come check out our awesome game now with awesome multiplayer!!!!!11!!".

Loop thing came from MS nerd site, french site=bad copycat

2012 release is the biggest problem, that thing surely needs some launch games and yet there are no third party leaks. So either,

1.Nothing is being made for next xbox(one year left)
2.MS managed to contain the leaks(failed in the past)
3.2013

I vote for number 3

If they plan to launch within 2 years then the final architecture is(will be soon) carved in stone.Somebody has to start writing OS for that thing...

Yeah, I'm guessing MS will launch it in 2013 as well; the Kinect was meant to be more than a stopgap feature, and to extend the current box's lifecycle.

Plus, for 2012 MS marketing was pushing hard for "Xbox Mayan Apocalypse," and that's a really hard sell.

Ubisoft Montreal is hard at work on 'target boxes' based on the intended specifications of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor, according to an Edge source. Delivery of the first iteration of genuine devkits, running custom hardware, is expected to reach studios before Christmas, and all signs point to the finalised console arriving at retail in late 2012.

Ubisoft’s teams are said to be working on PCs containing off-the-shelf components provided by Microsoft, and it’s our understanding that several other major developers, including certain EA studios, are also in possession of these target boxes. While our source was unable to share precise specifications, it is believed that AMD is providing the bespoke GPU solution for Microsoft’s console. A Ubisoft spokesperson said: "We do not comment on rumour and speculation."

We can also reveal that one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development, its entire focus having shifted to the console’s successor. The studio is also said to have been involved in the development process of the graphics technology adopted by Sony’s new hardware.

Edge is usually a good source for rumors

2012? By then I'll have finally finished up this Xmas's releases.

Most likely won't buy the new hardware at launch. I started my "wait 6 months, get discounted hardware and all the launch games for $19.99" strategy with Xbox 360 and it's paid off in spades

I'll still be surprised at 2012. The way the 360 is still selling well at a high price point they could wait until 2013. The only real reason to go earlier is if they believe going first is huge for continued momentum.

This is what the Mayans meant. Calling it 12/12/12 for the release. I am not ready, 2013 would have been a better year. Give the WiiU sometime to fuck up for once. Anyone think the announcement of the WiiU pushed up this console gen's life-cycle?

unless the Wii U re-unveiling shows a significantly more, um, significant system, I don't think there's anything to worry about.  last shown the Wii U was simply catching up with this gen, and leading by a bit.  but it'll have the same games as the PS3/360, looking slightly better with second screen support and (presumably) far inferior online.  there's nothing to worry about unless it really is a lot more powerful or has a snazzier gimmick.

besides, I think xbox live is probably irreplaceable for a lot of its audience with achievements, friends list, and all the dlc/content.

Digital Foundry
Quote
In terms of how we see the next-gen Xbox panning out based on what our own sources tell us, we understand that Kinect is set for a significant upgrade and has a very strong likelihood of ending up bundled with the machine. It is understood that Microsoft hosted a developer soiree at Disneyland just after E3 this year where the platform holder invited partners to pitch in with ideas on where they would want the technology to go, and the challenges they had with the current platform. This signifies that it was early days for the design just a few months ago, making the 2012 story seem even less likely.

It's also believed that Microsoft will continue its successful two SKU strategy, and indeed take it much further with its new platform: a pared down machine is to be released as cheaply as possible, and positioned more along the lines of a set-top box (the use of 360 as a Netflix viewing platform in the US is colossal) and perhaps as a Kinect-themed gaming portal, while a more fully-featured machine with optical drive, hard disk and backward compatibility aimed at the hardcore would be released at a higher price-point.

It will be funny if the next generation of consoles come out and most devs STILL continue to use X360/PS3 as their lead platforms, with the new consoles (and PCs) mostly getting moderately enhanced "up-ports" similar to today's PC ports.

Microsoft plans to release a next-generation Kinect device so accurate it can lip read, sources have told Eurogamer.

Kinect 2 will come bundled with future Xbox consoles, we understand.

The intention is that Kinect 2 will offer improved motion sensing and voice recognition.

One development source told Eurogamer that Kinect 2 will be so powerful it will enable games to lip read, detect when players are angry, and determine in which direction they are facing.

Kinect 2 can track the pitch and volume of player voices and facial characteristics to measure different emotional states.

Bundled is good

Quote
"It can be cabled straight through on any number of technologies that just take phenomenally high res data straight to the main processor and straight to the main RAM and ask, what do you want to do with it?" our source said.

Quote
Eurogamer understands Loop was the codename of Microsoft's early motion-sensing technology that predated Nintendo's July 2008 Wii Motion Plus announcement. It was a device that wrapped around a player's arm, and was said to be more accurate than both the Wii and the PlayStation Move controller.

Hm, so a lowered price Kinect enabled version for the casuals, and a regular/higher priced version for the hardcore gamers? Sounds good.

2012 sounds too early; I see no reason to rush it out and compete with the WiiU. Spring or fall 2013 makes more sense, maybe November 2013.
